Field of epigenetics – how genes interact with the environment, better understanding how genes do not shape the individual; it really is a matter of genes being exposed or influenced by environmental factors such as stress or parenting Examples: sleep problems, environmental factor: digital devices, tough neighborhoods/family living situations – attention problems, depression, higher risk taking, obesity, poor academic achievement Stress: positive stress biological; reaction can lead to better performance Tolerable stress – brain and body can absorb some of the negative stress, early childhood stress can be improved in adolescence due to adol plasticity Toxic stress can lead to change sin the neural pathways

Early development linked to childhood sexual abuse and environmental exposures/chemicals in utero Also low birth weight and obesity in girls (more studied than boys) For boys, overweight – early development, obesity – late Accelerated development – growing in stressful situations (seen as a survival strategy to be able to reproduce) Ask question: Impact of early development? Especially for girls – depression, sexual harassment, increased risk for substance abuse Boys more at risk for substance abuse if late.

Because of this imbalance adolescence is a time of vulnerability but also of opportunity. On one hand they are more vulnerable for Substance use in early adolescence permanently impacts the way the reward center func On the other hand this is the time to try out new things, explore, learn new skills, become competent in some areas; If we can connect pleasure with positive activities – having fun, learning exciting things, making meaningful contributions, doing something for others, we can counter some of the need to take risks or use substances (as a way of feeling excited and good)
