In the past 4 years, electricity production in the Kurdistan Region has increased by approximately 460%. Moreover, since 2006, energy consumption within the region has increased by approximately 140%, with current rates around 3,500 megawatts.
To satisfy the growing need, the Ministry of Electricity has invested over USD 1.5 billion into current and ongoing infrastructural and technological development. However, as a result of continued demand for electricity, the ministry has recently announced plans to expand production by additional 1,700 megawatts to reach 6,000 megawatts by 2017.
