Milestones Observed
To the right, Ottilie Glazier retired after 32 years of
documenting memorials and gifts into the Memorial
Book that resides in the little stand. She was asked to
do this way back when because of her calligraphy and
artistic talent. Thanks so much Ottilie for your many
years of faithfully documenting all those memorials.
She was presented with a framed picture of the
beautiful Judy Dobbs picture in the narthex at the
annual meeting on Sunday, January 15, 2015.
Pastor Roger was acknowledged for his 15 years of
service to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church at the
annual meeting as well.
To the left, Sondra was presented with a
congregational gift at the annual meeting
celebrating 30 years of faithful service to
Prince of Peace in using her musical talents
throughout all those years. Thanks, Sondra—
we couldn’t have done it without you!

Africa: ELCA response to Ebola totals
$275,000. With more aid planned, the
ELCA, working with partners including its
companion churches in Liberia and Sierra
Leone, has provided $275,000 in aid for
those affected by Ebola. The disease has
had a “devastating impact” on the lives of
many people, particularly women and
children, said Vitaly Vorana, program
director for Lutheran Disaster Response.

Communion Take Out
When I was a young boy, one of the customs my family had virtually every Sunday was going to worship and afterwards going
out to a local restaurant to eat. One of our favorites was Cactus Steak House on the edge of town, out near the bypass. To be
honest with you, sometimes I looked forward more to the meal after worship than the worship and its occasional meal. I would
always order the chopped steak, medium well, with mushroom sauce, french fries and a Pepsi. My mouth is watering even now
thinking about this. That tradition was a wonderful thing for my family, not just because we could "all get whatever we wanted,"
but because we did it as a family. And even though these meals happened over 40 years ago, they still hold a special place in
my heart.
I was thinking about this memory during this time of transition. I think it's because a homebound member mentioned how much
they missed the weekly celebration at the Lord's Table. For longer than I've been your pastor Prince of Peace has offered Holy
Communion at each Sunday worship. It has become part of who we are as a people of God. It is our family meal!
One of the things I enjoy most about serving as your pastor is celebrating Holy Communion weekly and being able to offer that
gift regularly to our homebound members. Since last fall, as my life has become more "full," I've not be able to visit our
homebound members as often as I would like. It averages to one visit every other month. As I was praying about this, I was
asking God how this could be remedied.
Then I remembered something I'd learned in seminary. There was an ancient practice of the Church, where fellow members,
would take communion to those who were not able to be at worship. We have never used it here, because we've had two
pastors, and when we were smaller, we never had the need. This is a practice that dates back to the earliest days of the Church.
In fact, in 150 AD Justin Martyr shares these words, which are in our With One Voice hymnal on page 6.
“On Sunday all are gathered together in unity…
When we have concluded the prayer, bread is set out together with wine.... The presider then offers prayer and
thanksgiving and the people sing out their assent....
There is distribution of the things over which thanks has been said and each person participates, and these things
are sent to those not present.”
Read that last sentence again, esp. the last phrase, "and these things are sent to those not present." Here's what's happening.
Fellow Christians are taking the elements of the Lord's Table to those who are not able to partake with them at worship. This is
how the early Church did it. Notice that the visitors aren't ordained, nor are they "instituting" communion themselves. They aren't
serving as the presiding minister and starting a brand new feast. They are simply carrying the gifts from the altar, that have
already been prepared, out to the family members who can't be there. It would be like our current servers leaving the altar area
and walking to the back of the church or another part of the building to share the gift with someone who can't make it up front.
These people are still part of the family, but simply aren't able to be present at the time of worship. Also, just so you don't think
I'm playing fast and loose with some obscure church writings, consider that this custom would not be something brand new for
Lutherans either. There are other ELCA congregations in our area that do this regularly. Even the worship resources from our
own publishing house have a special blessing that can be used at the conclusion of worship for those heading out to share the
meal.
Think how this could change lives, deepen faith, not only of our homebound members, but of us. We could potentially share this
family meal with our homebound brothers and sisters each week! When I shared this discovery and possibility with our Worship
Support Ministry and the Council, they were quite excited and unanimously wanted to make this happen here! This does not
mean I would stop visiting homebound. Oh no, I would continue that important ministry. It does mean that we could expand this
great gift of God and in the process we live out our Mission statement to be a family that is growing in faith as it discovers new
(and old) ways to reach out in love.
Pray about this! I hope you will consider being part of this exciting opportunity. If you are interested in learning more, send me
an email ([email protected]). I will call a meeting, where we can discuss this, ask questions, pray together and get
organized.
Joy,

New Family Pages Families, please take and utilize the new Family Page tri-
folds that are in the Narthex under the Sunday School
bulletin board. Please take one home for your family to
read, discuss and do in relation to the lesson that is
taught every week. There are activities for all levels about
the lesson that the PreK – 4th grades covered that week.
Help us support you in your family’s faith.
Plan for Sunday School on Palm Sunday On March 29th the 9:20 am church service will center
around a drama entitled The Cry of the Whole
Congregation. Be aware that It may not be appropriate for
the little ones so we are asking you to send your PreK,
Kindergarten, & 1st Grade students to their classroom
before you go to service. However, kids from 2nd – 6th
grades are encouraged to worship with their families for
the duration of the service, which will serve as their
Sunday School experience for the day. This will be a very
powerful experience. A more in-depth description of the
service can be found on the Worship Support page.
Attention All Families Please have your children attend the beginning of service
before Sunday School. Our kids need to be in church!
There is not always someone to supervise in the
classroom before class starts and the teachers need to
have some preparation time. We are tweeking the
services so that the kids are more engaged. They are
missing a lot if they just sit in an empty classroom for that
first 20 minutes.
MARCH 2015 • PRINTS OF PEACE 6

Sunday School Volunteers 2015-2016 Sign-Up
Starts NOW! Anyone interested in signing up to help with Sunday School
for the 2015-2016 school year is invited to sign up now!
There is a clipboard in the bin on Katie’s office door. Flip to
the grade (Pre-K through 6th) you would like to help with and
sign up to be either a teacher or assistant (shepherd) in
that classroom. We also have an opportunity to work 1-on-1
with a few kids as a Sunday School buddy. If you would be
interested in leading a 20 minute activity on occasional
Sundays in the nursery for preschoolers during the 9:20
service, you can sign up for that too! We even have a
separate sheet in case you would rather be on a list of
substitutes. Make a difference in the faith journey of our
PoP children – sign up to help with Sunday School TODAY!
Confirmation students – please note that shepherd
positions fill up fast, so don’t wait to sign up!
Check out our Progress in Sunday School A timeline of the Bible stories that will be taught at Sunday
School this year lines the wall past the staff offices. If the
picture is in color, we have covered that Bible story. Come
and see how many stories our children will learn this year!
PoP Kids in Action Don’t forget to check out the photo board outside the 2nd
grade classroom. You can see some of the things that our
kids are busy with during the year as they learn and grow
with Jesus. As pictures are removed from the board they will
placed outside the Christian Ed office for you to take. There
are lots so please help yourselves.
Christian Education Coordinator, Prince of
Peace – we are still accepting resumes until
mid-March. Please forward resume and/or
questions to Pastor Roger.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Thank You Thank you to Pastor Roger and Pastoral Intern, Cheryl Davis for
their kind words and support to my family and me after the
passing of my mother, Kathleen Lindgren. I could feel the prayers
and support during my mom’s long journey. I also want to thank
Jeannie Thompson for her many visits to my mom at Oakridge
Gardens. These visits were a true testimony of God’s work. The
family of Kathleen Lindgren—Holly Keenan and Garett Lindgren.
Let’s Stock Up St. Joe’s Food Pantry! Prince of Peace Lutheran Church is happy to
cooperate with many churches in the Fox Cities on a
joint food pantry. St. Joseph Food Pantry was started
in 1982 and weekly distributes 30 tons of fresh food
and non-perishable items to hundreds of men,
women, children, elderly, working poor and
unemployed. Through the years they have created
an effective system for churches and local agencies
to cooperate and care for our needy in the Fox
Cities. We are blessed to be part of this vital
network. PoP collects food each quarter.
St. Joe‘s is now providing plastic bags with
suggested food items printed on them. Cash gifts
will be used for fresh milk and other items not
donated. The Social Concerns Ministry team will
hand out those bags on Sunday, March 1st. Please
fill the bag and return it on Sunday March 8th. If you
cannot make it to church when bags are passed out,
feel free to use any bag you have at home. You can
leave the bag in the entry ways to church. Please
give generously to these quarterly gatherings if you
can…and remember our local poor in your prayers.
Please email Shawn Kelly at [email protected]
or Nette Kimball at [email protected] with
any questions or for additional information.
We Need Your Help! The Stewardship Ministry is looking for a couple of
people to join our ministry. If you might be
interested, but would like to see what we do first,
please join us for our next meeting on Thursday,
March 5th at 6:30 p.m. at Prince of Peace. Please
contact Ben Propson at (920) 277-1343 or
[email protected] if you are interested or have
questions. Thank you.
Long Range Planning Update On January 17th Pastor Dave Daubert started leading the
congregational members through the “PAWN” process. The
participants contributed their thoughts and insights during this
event and you have seen some of the results on the hallway walls.
The discernment process will continue in March when we will be
asking for input from each of you in the congregation. Pastor
Roger and Cheryl will lead this next phase of the process during
the Sunday sermons—March 8, 15 & 22. This will be an
opportunity for everyone to input into shaping the future ministry
of Prince of Peace. Also in March, the Long Range Planning team
will conclude our community interview phase.
In April, Pastor Dave Daubert will work with Council, Long Range
Planning and staff to analyze the data and determine next steps
prior to making a call for a second pastor. We are in exciting times
here at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church! If you have questions on
this process, please reach out to any member of Council or the
Long Range Planning team.
Book Club Book Club has chosen the book One Hundred
Names for Love by Diane Ackerman. We will meet
Thursday, March 26th at 1:15 p.m. to discuss the
book. This is a memoir that is deeply rewarding
about her husband's recovery from a stroke and loss
of vocabulary. "A testament to the power of creativity
in language, life -- and love." Heller McAlpin. If you
need help finding the book, call Leah Johnson 722-
7379. This book is a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize
and the National Book Circle Critics Award. Join us!

Ministry Spotlight of the Month – Global Mission
The ministry strives to develop a deeper and a broader
understanding of Global Mission. The Global Mission Ministry
helps educate our congregation in relationships and
involvement with various partners. The ministry provides a focal
point for discussions as our members seek to discern how God
is calling us to be involved in God’s Global Mission. Prince of
Peace supports the ELCA and Lutheran World Relief programs
and educates our congregation on how to be more involved.
Global Mission activities and outreach this year included:
Jamaica mission trips, companion relationship with Kopano
Lutheran in South Africa, sponsorship of missionary Rev. Kevin
Jacobson in Suriname, Malaria Appeal Celebration on April 19th,
Feed My Starving Children event – July 20-22 and the upcoming
Benefit Concert for LWF Augusta Victoria Hospital in East
Jerusalem on Sunday, March 15 at PoP.
For more information, contact Chuck Steinbach at
954-1164 or [email protected]. Here is the church, here
is the steeple.
Open the door and see
all the people.
Prince of Peace is the people! Sunday
morning happens because 50+ people jump
in to greet, usher, teach children, sing in
choir, serve communion, wash coffee cups
and provide many other tasks around the
church. Our neighborhood, city and world are
touched by Prince of Peace members who
mentor and teach skills, prepare and serve
meals, collect used goods, raise awareness and advocate for non-
profit organizations. Through the many works of service with and for
others, Prince of Peace members grow in their faith and reach out in
love! There are many ways to serve at Prince of Peace. From a one-
time roll up your sleeves and get something done projects to ongoing
ministries and groups. There is something for everyone that could fit
into their interests and gifts. The ministry leaders and staff can help
you get connected in volunteering by using your gifts and skills. The
list of leaders and staff is located in your Prince of Peace telephone
directory. Open the door! See all the people!
Prince of Peace Camping Weekend Join us for a relaxing weekend of camping and
fellowship! Mark your calendars for July 10-12
at Calumet County Park in Hilbert. We have
reserved campsites for members to set up their
campers for the weekend. The cost is $52.00 for the weekend. If you
are not able to join us for the overnight camping, please consider
joining us for the evening worship service and community meal/
potluck at the campground. For more information, contact Eric &
Brigetta Wingender – 460-4205 or Bob & Sarah Koester – 470-
2689.
Everyone Has a Ministry! The Bible often compares the church to the
human body with many members and many
parts. Each part is needed for the body to
function properly. In the church there are many
members and each one has something
important to give.
“From him [Jesus] the whole body, joined and
held together by every supporting ligament,
grows and builds itself up in love, as each part
does its work” (Ephesians 4:16).
The church is called the body of Christ. There is
a definite, life-giving connection between
everyone in the church body. Life flows from
one person to another and back again.
“Somebody who has experienced the comfort
of God knows that he or she has something to
pour,” says Dr. Larry Crabb. “I love the word
pour. It’s a metaphor that doesn’t feel clinical;
it feels alive. There’s something within the
person who has been comforted that can
actually pour into the other and bathe his or her
soul.”

SPIRIT LED, SPIRIT SHAPED A Journey Together
Bishop Gerald Mansholt welcomes all youth in the synod to
gather for a time for Dwelling in the Word, lots of
conversation & prayer, and getting to know one another as
we talk about who we are and where God might be calling us
into mission.
We intend these gatherings to be an important step in a
Spirit-led process of shaping the synod to participate more
deeply in God’s mission in the world. Having the voice of our
youth is very important as we have small group
conversations by Dwelling in the Word, Listening and
Praying Together and Asking.
“What might God be up to in our synod?”
“Where might the Spirit be stirring
our imaginations for ministry?”
Please consider joining us on Saturday, March 1st
2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
St. John Lutheran Church, 318 Garfield, Marion

Many, many thanks from your February Mission Jamaica
Team and the children and staff of Garland Hall Childrens
Home! Thank you for your prayers, your encouragement
and generous gifts of money! With the money from the Prince of Peace Mission
Endowment grant and funds donated by members of our congregation, we were
able to:
• Purchase 3 goats and 600 lbs of goat feed
• Purchase 50 fryer chickens and feed to raise them
to maturity
• Purchase $1700 of food to stock the orphanage’s
shelves and freezer (amazing!)
It was a week of repair work at the orphanage and
spending very special time with the kids—which included
a trip to the beach with the children and staff where we
had worship, water time and lunch. Thank you, again!!

PARAMENTS/CANDLE VOLUNTEER FOR MARCH Laura McCarthy
The Cry of the Whole Congregation The Cry of the Whole Congregation is a drama, written by
Walt Wangerin, Jr., which will serve as the basis for
worship on Palm/Passion Sunday, March 29th, at the 8 &
9:20 a.m. worship services. It will also constitute the
Sunday School lesson AND a full worship experience for
children, ages 2nd grade and older. It is important for them
to be there and experience this story along with their
parents!
THIS DRAMA IS UNIQUE: it has no audience! We ALL
become actors along with the four readers! Pastor
Wangerin wrote this drama so that it would include us into
the story of the Passion of our Lord by engaging our
senses through sight, sound and the rhythm of both
music and motion. Don’t miss it!
Box Tops for Education
We are STILL saving box tops
and also labels for education
from Campbell Soup cans.
Thank you for your help in the
past! The box for box tops and
labels is located above the mail
boxes across from the offices in the hallway. Thank you
for continuing to save and support the Box Tops for
Education.
