Sunday School Action Above, the fifth and sixth graders are working on their

Sunday School Project. Below, the Pre-K-Kindergarten

kids are rehearsing for their Christmas Program on

December 8th at the 10:45 a.m. service.

Mission Jamaica, 2014 A team of 10 representing Prince of Peace will travel to Montego Bay to work at the

Westhaven Children’s Home for handicapped children and young adults from January 4-11.

We are requesting your donations of clothing and toiletries for the children, as well as cash

donations to allow us to shop in Jamaica for various supplies for the home. We are the first

team of 2014 working at the home, so many supplies such as toilet tissue, Kleenex,

powders, tooth paste, etc. are running very low. The home now

serves 80+ residents. The needs are great. Summer weight

clothing is needed for children 2 years to adult. Please put

your donated items in the suitcase located in the library. Cash donations may be put in an

envelope marked “Mission Jamaica” and put in the collection plates. Address checks to Prince

of Peace and you will receive credit at Prince of Peace for your donation. Be sure to indicate

Mission Jamaica. Our team looks forward to seeing the children and

staff again. They will meet us at their gate with many smiles and a warm

welcome. The residents of Westhaven are all handicapped orphans or

children dropped at the home as young children because their families

were unable to care for them. The home depends on contributions for

much of its operating costs. We were pleased to see that last year a

teacher for special needs was added to the staff because of someone’s

generous contribution. Watch for information about the January 29

Mission Jamaica trip to Garland's Children's home.

The Greatest Gift – You!

They gave themselves first to the Lord . . .

- II Corinthians 8:5b

Christmas is a time for giving. It’s a time for giving gifts, sending greeting cards, and exchanging the spirit of

the season. In this time of giving, I’m reminded of the passage above from Saint Paul’s Second Letter to the

Corinthians. With a tradition of giving to people with birthdays, we have somehow developed a habit of giving gifts to

each other on Christ’s birthday! With that irony in mind and as Jesus’ birthday approaches, I hope that you’ll consider

giving Christ a birthday gift.

Our best gift to Christ would be our very selves! There are no greater gifts we can give than our own lives in

love, the study of God’s Word, prayer and service. There are other gifts, of course. So now is a good time to remember

our pledges and promises of stewardship support. We take this opportunity to examine our

giving or catch up on giving or giving additionally. I hope that you’ll also remember this part of

our ministry together.

As Christ gave himself on the first Christmas, let’s now hear his call to give ourselves to

him. Have a very blessed Christmas!

See you in church!

Pastor Gary J. Nokleberg

Midweek Advent Worship Schedule

Join us at 6:30 pm, Wednesdays, December 4, 11, & 18 (don’t forget—soup is on at 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.)

ALSO, Refreshments and Fellowship Follow Each Service

We gather for worship in the quiet of the sanctuary even though the busyness of the season whirls around us. Come

and find the true meaning of the season of Advent, as we prepare for the birth of the Savior. “The Gifts of Advent” is

the theme this year. The Season of Advent is itself a gift – a time set apart to prepare for the coming of Christ, the

“baby gift” of Bethlehem.

Refreshments and fellowship follow each service and will be available in the narthex. If you’d like to provide your

favorite Christmas cookies for the fellowship time, please sign up on the Witness Ministry board in the narthex.

News from Fox Valley Lutheran Homes Due to some recent turnover in tenants at Linwood Place Apartments, we

Blue Christmas Service – Sunday, Dec. 22, 6:30pm The holidays are joyous times, but can be sad times too, especially if you’ve

lost a loved one or are going through a time when you have lost something

close to you—the end of a dream or a personal disappointment. To help us

through this time we are offering at Prince of Peace a “Blue Christmas”

service. It will be a meditative healing service that enables us to come before

God and let Him heal and speak to our pain and loss with the promise of His

Son. This will be held on Sunday evening, December 22, 6:30pm. Since this

is near the beginning of winter, the longest day of darkness and it is just two

days before our Christmas Eve celebration of Christ’s birth, we think this is

an especially appropriate time to gather for remembrance, reflection,

worship and ask for God’s help through these times of transition and new

direction. Invite your family and friends to this upcoming service.

Thank You! Thank you Women of Prince of Peace for your congregational unit

contribution of $1000 to the 25th Anniversary Appeal of Women of the ELCA.

This gift was given in memory and honor of the faithful women of Prince of

Peace. For every dollar given to the appeal, half supported the ELCA Malaria

Campaign in its goal to raise $15 million by 2015 to support the ELCA’s

efforts to end deaths from Malaria. The other half supports the ongoing

ministries of the Women of the ELCA through which lives are enriched and

supported in love of all women, girls and congregations in the US and

worldwide. Please see the thank you from Women of the ELCA that appeared

in the November issue of the Interchange. It can be found on the women’s

bulletin board in the narthex. You are all very special and appreciated by the

ELCA and Women of the ELCA.

Hrang Hlei and family Visit We were very happy to welcome Rev.

Hrang Hlei, his wife A Cer, daughter Jessica

and son Luke on Sunday, Nov. 3. We heard

an update on his research and dissertation

writing based on leadership challenges in

the Chin refugee congregations in

Indianapolis and Dallas. His research can

benefit those congregations in their mission outreach and will be useful as

Hrang prepares to return to Myanmar seminary to teach after graduating

from Luther Seminary, St Paul.

Hrang's tuition is paid for by a program of the ELCA to bring high-potential

pastors to ELCA seminaries to study and then return and be a resource to

their national church. Our benevolence gifts to the ELCA help make these

kind of projects possible! Prince of Peace also sent designated funds gifts

to pay their January 2014 apartment rent. Hrang and family requested our

ongoing prayers for their studies and ministry.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Emergency Shelter on Christmas Day Are you looking for a way to provide service to those in need in

our community this Christmas? Prince of Peace members

volunteer to help serve the evening meal at the Shelter the

fourth Wednesday of every month. This year in December the

fourth Wednesday is on Christmas Day. The shift is from 4 to 7

PM and involves heating up the meal, serving and clean-up.

What better way for you and family members to celebrate the

birth of Christ than to serve those most in need in our

community. Space is limited to volunteer, so call now to sign

up for this great opportunity. Contact Ron Jones (Social

Concerns Ministry) at 731-9250 or [email protected].

PoP Women’s Epiphany Brunch All women of Prince of Peace are invited to share an

Epiphany Brunch, devotion and fellowship on

Saturday, January 4th at 9a.m. It’s a great way to get

to know other women at Prince of Peace. Everything

is provided, so just bring yourself and a friend or

relative. Please contact Theresa Rasmussen at 920-

203-3162 by December 29 so that enough food is

prepared for that day. Following the meal, the

annual women’s meeting will be held along with the

installation of the 2014 officers. Suggestions for

women’s activities and projects are welcome during

the meeting. So consider sharing your thoughts and

ideas. Hope to see you there for an enjoyable and

relaxing morning.

Advent Cards for PoP

Special Mission Partners We invite you to sign and add a Christmas note in 3

Christmas cards at the Welcome Center window the

first two weeks in December. We have a card for:

Our Companion Congregation- Kopano Lutheran

Church in Mogwase, South Africa; Rev. Hrang Hlei

from Myanmar Institute of Theology, Yangon,

Myanmar now studying for PhD at Luther Seminary,

St Paul; and our partner missionaries at Jamaica

seminary, Rev. David and Mary Kuck. We will mail

Looking for a Merry Christmas? Are you ready to pray

for one? 12 Prayers for Christmas

Christmas is a glorious time of year! God brings us face to face once

again with His design for and redemption of mankind. His intentions

toward us are for living life abundantly. His plans for the kingdom are

victorious!

But for many people, the holidays can be filled with unrealistic

expectations. Old hurts are sometimes revisited and new ones

inflicted. Hope can go deferred and result in heartsickness (Proverbs

13:12).In the midst of the tinsel and lights and shopping, let’s

remember what the season is really about! Let’s pray for a spirit of all

things Christmas for our loved ones and ourselves.

1. LOVE – Lord, help us follow the way of love – let the love of Christ

compel us (1 Corinthians 13:1; 2 Corinthians 5:14).

2. JOY – Restore the joy of your salvation to us; let us experience the

joy of Your presence (Psalm 51:12; 16:11).

3. PEACE – Let Your peace rule and guard our hearts; give us more

of You – You are our peace (Colossians 3:15; Philippians 4:7;

Ephesians 2:14).

4. HOPE – Enlighten the eyes of our heart so that we may know the

hope You called us to (Ephesians 1:18).

5. FAVOR – Let Your favor rest on us (Luke 2:52).

6. LIFE – Shine Your light of life on us; help us to walk in it (Job

33:30).

7. SALVATION – Help us to fear You so we unlock the treasure of

Your salvation (Isaiah 33:6).

8. SELFLESSNESS – Keep us from self-seeking attitudes that reject

truth (Roman 2:8).

9. GENEROSITY – Make us rich in ways that result in generosity on

our part so You will be praised (2 Corinthians 9:11).

10. RECEIVING – Help us receive Your kingdom, Your Spirit, and Your

grace (Daniel 7:18; John 20:22; Romans 5:17).

11. SEEKING – Encourage us to see Your face with all our hearts

(Deuteronomy 4:29; Psalm 27:8).

12. PRAISE – We ascribe glory to Your name, Lord; we come before

You in worship for You are holy (1 Chronicles 16:28-29). From the publishers of Pray! Magazine

Soups on at Prince of Peace! Come join us for soup, bread and dessert on

Wednesdays, (December 4th, 11th, & 18th) at

Hall. Bring your family and friends for food and

fellowship! We are also looking for volunteers to

make soup or desserts—sign up on the kiosk in

the narthex. If you would like to help out with the

soup suppers or would like more information,

please contact Cindy Romnek @ 739-5255.

opportunity! Watch for more information in the

9 PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH

“Welcome Ambassadors” The Witness Ministry is looking for either individuals

or families who would be interested helping at the

“Welcome” window one Sunday every other month. It

would require a short amount of time after the

worship service attended. Small tasks would include

helping visitors by sharing information about Prince of

Peace and helping with their name tags. This is a

great way to help visitors feel welcome. If this is

something you may be interested in doing, please

contact the church or email Cindy Romnek at

[email protected].

99 Thoughts for Parents of Teenagers Encourage teens to pursue fellowship with the larger,

diverse body of Christ. I’m convinced that one of the

reasons young people drift from the church and their faith is

because we haven’t given them a complete heritage. Many

of our teenagers have a church experience that’s filled with

worship, classes, youth group, and other activities with

peers of the same age. They need interaction with people of

faith of all ages. It’s possible that young people are learning

that anything related to their faith is only relevant when

experienced with people of their age. We are robbing them

of opportunities to experience life in the larger body of

Christ—opportunities that allow them to benefit from the full

breadth of gifts, ages, wisdom, experience, and abilities of

the people that made up the church. Our teenagers’

spiritual maturity is best fed, grown, and cemented into

maturity when fellowship is broad-based rather than with

just their peers. © 2011 Walt Mueller
