Mosaic Crosses (Below) Audrey and Vivi are displaying the mosaic crosses

they made in the art workshop for First

Communion classes. This is so they remember

their First Communion.

To the left—the fourth graders were participating

in the Paschal Meal experience and learning

why we take communion. It is interesting when

they get to taste wine for the first time.

Exodus Youth Group met on

January 3rd for a New Year’s party.

As you can see, they did a relay

race. They also played with hula

good time.

Lift Up Your Hearts

Set your affection on things above.

- Colossians 3:2

We’re more familiar with the above sentence from Paul’s Letter to the Colossians in a version that says, “Set

your minds on things that are above” [NRSV]. While this more well-known translation is fully accurate, I rather like the

other one. To set my mind on something is to engage my brain. To set my affection on something engages my heart.

Faith in Christ always has a push-pull effect on Christians where our love for Jesus is often working in tandem

with our desire to understand him. Our hearts want to rise up to him with love, even while our brains want to stay

firmly planted here in order to figure out things. It’s that old push-pull thing which says that if we’re too heavenly

minded, then we won’t be any earthly good.

There’s truth in that. Trying to live in some kind of heavenly bliss just can’t last that long before earthly cares

put us into tailspins that crash. Still, Saint Paul says, “Set your affections on things above,” and we can’t get away

from his encouragement to do it. What do we do?

There’s a way of life with Christ which allows lifting up prayers even during the most busy day. It’s a witness

that Christians aren’t limited by the “things that are on earth,” as Saint Paul says later. We can live in a continuous

state of silent prayer directed to God because that’s where our hearts are turned. It’s where our affections arise.

There’s no hurry about it. It’s an inner orientation.

When the cares and stresses of all the people and things around us threaten to capsize life, it’s good for us to

remember Saint Paul’s encouragement to “set your affection on things above.” God waits patiently for our attention

and is ready to give us the peace, calm and transforming grace that we need. Lift up your

hearts!

Pastor Gary J. Nokleberg

RENOVATION DEDICATION You’re invited to a Dedication and opportunity to give thanks to God on Sunday, February 2 when we will celebrate

the new building renovations and changes we have made over the past six months. Make sure you are part of the

celebration!

Here is what our morning will be! We will have worship and Sunday School at our usual times. So you don’t

need to change your usual worship practices. Also, if you regularly come to the 8:00am or 10:45, just plan on staying

a little longer or coming earlier to attend the brief 9:20 Dedication as well. As you come between services, enjoy some

fellowship, walk around the building, view the specially produced video of the changes, all while enjoying refreshments,

which McMahon and Associates, our architect, is generously providing.

Here is what our morning looks like: 8:00 – Worship

9-9:20 – Refreshments in Congregational Life Room

with coffee and juice in the narthex

9:20 – 9:50 – Dedication Worship in Sanctuary

9:50 – Refreshments in Congregational Life Room and Fellowship Hall

10:45 – Worship

The morning is designed to give all of our worshipers a chance to celebrate this major event in the life of our

congregation. We hope to see you there to give thanks to God for this major blessing as we continue to grow in faith

and reach out in love.

Help Trinity Lutheran Church Now! (see the then picture) Trinity Lutheran Church in New London experienced devastating storm

damage to their buildings last August. A complete rebuild of the structures is

taking place now, and Prince of Peace is ready to help our sisters and

brothers!

Recently PoP’s Congregational Council voted to approve funding a Hearing Loop

System for them similar to the one we installed recently during our capital

improvements project of this past year. It’s truly an act of love for those who have

lost much!

The goal is to raise $5000 for this project, and a task force of Chris Volkman,

Carrie Sinotte, Chuck Steinbach and Alice Anderson is helping to spearhead the

effort. Please help our sister congregation by giving toward this project. Checks

can be written to PoP (mark in the memo line that it’s for “Trinity Lutheran

Church, New London”) or you may use the blue-edged offering envelopes in your

offering box. In keeping with our mission statement, let’s “reach out in love”!

Mark This Date on Your Calendar

Please mark this date on your calendar. Ash

Wednesday is March 5, 2014. Worship services are

at noon and 6:30 p.m. with imposition of ashes and

Holy Communion. Plan to attend this very important

service of the Church year.

Who Needs Cozy?

There’s a short distance between cozy and crowded. If you like things cozy, you probably don’t feel crowded very often.

You gather things that you love around you. You fill your walls with pictures and your desk with wise sayings. You don’t

tolerate empty shelves, empty walls or empty decorative bowls.

I’m not quite that cozy. I like space around me so that I can breathe and feel light and free. I can’t be productive if I have

too much to look at. Besides, if there’s a lot of stuff around me, it easily crosses the line into messiness, and our house

turns into a trash can.

Over Christmas break, Horace—who is quite cozy—and I caught a vision together and opened up some space. We moved a

loveseat into another room that needed it and rearranged the remaining furniture. We changed around the paintings, got

rid of some stuff, cleaned out the corners, and left a decorative bowl empty. Together we brought about a whole new way

of seeing and being.

This reminds me of my cross-cultural class at seminary in January. We went into inner city churches and observed the

ways in which the Spirit has guided them to create new ways of seeing and being for their neighborhoods. I was humbled.

I was inspired. I was reminded that commitment needs to go deeply into our hearts if we are to bring about God’s

Kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven. We may even have to give up some of our coziness and open up some space so

that we can dream new dreams and see new things. It won’t be cozy; but that’s okay.

Who needs cozy when God is calling us to faith?

them call John @ 920-419-5754 or FVLH @ 734-7229 to arrange

for a tour.

The Faith in Action (FIA) programs administered by Fox Valley

Lutheran Homes is seeking volunteer nurses (either working or

retired) to help at meal sites taking blood pressures and blood

glucose screenings. We are also in need of a volunteer

receptionist to help at the meal sites for about 2 hours twice per

month. The duties are easy and training will be provided. We are

also in need of drivers to take people (mostly elderly) to doctor,

dentist, grocery store and pharmacy appointments. We are often

the last hope for some of these folks to get a ride to see their

doctor or get groceries. We also need volunteers who can assist

with minor/small home repairs. If you have 1 hour or several hours

each month to be a driver or other volunteer, we can use you.

Your one time or multiple assistance is needed and so appreciated

by those in need. Please call Julie @ 920-850-8734.

Cotton and Cotton Blend

Fabrics Needed Did you get new clothes for Christmas? Don’t know

what to do with your old cotton clothes? The quilters

have need of these articles and will lovingly cut them

up to go into quilts for local and world-wide

distribution. They can use cotton, flannel or cotton

blend items. Leave them in the Community Room

closet. For more information, contact Ruth Reichelt

at 733-4157 or Jackie Lee at 997-0651. Thank you

in advance.

Early Spring New Member Classes “Creating a caring connection within our church community”…

that seems to sum up pretty well what the new member classes

are about. Are you considering joining Prince of Peace? Mark

your calendars for the upcoming new member classes. Our first

gathering is scheduled for Sunday, February 9th at 4:00 p.m.

New member classes are scheduled from February 16th

through March 23rd on Sunday mornings starting at 9:30 a.m.

in the Congregational Life Room. An informational letter will be

sent out the beginning of February to all individuals or families

who are interested in joining.

The Witness Ministry is implementing a “mentor” program for

the new members. If you would like to be a mentor for the

spring new member class, are interested in becoming a

member or would like additional information, please contact

Charlene Schaible at 540-8525, Bridgett Wingender at 882-

0057 or Cindy Romnek at 739-5255.

It is Not Just the Standing Walls of Prince of Peace. . . 1 Peter 4:10-11 - “God’s gifts of grace come in many forms. Each of

you have received a gift in order to serve others. You should use it

faithfully…Then in all things God will be praised through Jesus

Christ.”

At Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, we come from different

backgrounds and different experiences, but we come together

because we have found some things that are important to us…real

relationships and a caring community. We have also found

something so much bigger than ourselves—a way to grow a deeper

relationship with God.

Prince of Peace is more than just a building. It is a group of people

coming together to leave a personal and eternal “fingerprint” on the

community around us.

Our faith touches everything we do! The Bible isn’t just a book we talk

about on Sundays. The Bible guides our daily lives and is where we

find God’s purpose for our lives.

Our mission at Prince of Peace is “Growing in Faith and Reaching out

in Love.” We seek out ways to introduce others to the good news of

the Gospel by actively being the hands and feet of Jesus Christ. We

encourage all our members to go beyond just attending worship but

look for opportunities to serve as close as our own church, and as far

away as our next mission trip.

There are many ways for you to use your spiritual gifts that you have

been blessed with at Prince of Peace and in our Fox Valley

community. Please prayerfully consider how you can get involved

today so you can give glory to God for all he has given you.

Join Us for Scrapbooking Our next scrapbooking gathering is scheduled

for Friday, February 21st from 6:00 to midnight

in the Fellowship Hall. Bring family members

and friends to join the fun! We meet the third

Friday of every month.

Brew Crew for Women at PoP

Have you heard, “You are what you eat”, or the

Hippocrates quote “Let food be thy medicine

and medicine be thy food”? What do you have

brewing in your kitchen?

Well, something new is “brewing” at Prince of

Peace. Women of all ages are invited to learn

more about health and its connection to food.

Wondering about grains? Want to learn more?

Come and learn how grains may be impacting

your health.

We will be meeting once a month on a

Saturday morning. A great fellowship

opportunity! Please consider joining us on

Saturday, March 1st from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. in

the narthex.
