LAST DAY OF FAITH FORMATION FOR 2018-19 CLASSES!
For the last day of class, the Faith Formation students
made Prayer Bottles to take home. The older classes
generously made extras that we will use in the worship
bags. The Prayer Bottles were filled with water, liquid
glue, glitter and small shapes that represent symbols of
faith. The kids can shake their bottles and then find the
different shapes as prompts for reflection and prayer.
When they find a heart, they can think about where they saw
God’s love today. When they find a leaf, they can think about
where they grew in faith today. We hope these Prayer Bottles
stir up family faith conversations at home!
ON MOTHER’S DAY (May 12th)
the Faith Formation kids (Little Lambs-4th grade),
at the direction on Colleen Perrine on guitar,
led the congregation in singing “I Will Call Upon the Lord.”
Everyone had great enthusiasm with the clapping and stomping!

PASTOR’S PAGE “Be Apart before Falling Apart”
One of the riches of the Bible is that we meet God Incarnate, Jesus, up
-close-and-personal. We meet him in about as human a way as we can imag-
ine: born and placed in an animal manger, calling and teaching his disciples,
touching, healing and eating with those who were said to be untouchable and
ultimately paying the price for our sins by dying on our behalf. Yet one thing I
always appreciate is his need to get away, spend time with the Father and
pray! We see that over and over again. The Bible is not shy about showing us
that. Jesus wasn’t some kind of Superman, who never got tired, hungry, an-
gry or stressed. He was human too and, as a result, he needed time to be
apart to pray, or else he would fall apart and fail.
This is a good reminder for us too. We need time to get away, pray, reflect and consider how God is
speaking to us each moment of each day. We don’t have to wait until summer to do this. In fact, God de-
signed a Sabbath into each week. We are to regularly rest and renew. I hope you do that. In fact, as you have
Sabbath time this summer, I would challenge you to make Sabbath worship a regular part of your schedule in
the fall. Find a way to regularly talk to God. Don’t put this off. It is best to fill the reservoir of God’s grace
when water is plentiful and peaceful, rather than when a drought comes. Find a way to do this now! Make it a
priority! Plan a regular time to talk to God and communicate.
We are blessed to have a God that doesn’t play hard-to-get. He is always accessible to us and con-
necting to him doesn’t require special equipment, a membership card or an appointment. All that is needed
is an open and listening heart! So find that time over the next few weeks to make that a regular practice (if
you currently aren’t, or if you are, then go on a deeper journey) and be prepared to receive more peace, direc-
tion and purpose in your lives. I promise you that the joys will become more joyous, the sadness will become
more manageable and not as scary, as the reservoir of God’s grace will fill your thirsty heart in new ways.
Joy,

MEN’S BIBLE STUDY:
The Wednesday morning Men’s Bible Study is currently reading and discussing the book, “God’s Wisdom for Navigating Life,” by Timothy Keller with Kathy Keller. It is a daily devotional on the Book of Proverbs. We read the 7 readings for the week and then discuss those readings on Wednesday morning. Any men inter-ested are invited to join the group which meets every Wednesday morning from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. at Angel’s Restaurant (1401 E. John St, Appleton). You can even come once to check it out! For more information contact Al Peckham or Dean Gruner.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO PROVIDE ALTAR FLOWERS ?
Do you have a friend or family member who you'd like to have re-membered or honored? Do you have an anniversary or special occasion yet this year to celebrate? Do you want to recognize the Glory of God in your life?
There are several Sundays still available on the "altar flowers" cal-endar (which is now hanging on the Narthex bulletin board’s Wor-ship Support section.) Feel free to fill a spot (or share one) by sim-ply signing your name on a Sunday which you hold meaningful. (Please include a comment to use in the bulletin for why you are sharing flowers.) Then, you may order a plant or flower arrange-ment of your choice through any local florist, Memorial and Robin-son’s often being popular options.* Ask them to be delivered by noon on the Friday before your chosen Sunday.
*If you prefer, bring in your own fresh cut flowers/plant versus deliv-ery; just have them here prior to the 8 a.m. service!
The following thank you note was recently received from
the folks at Appleton East HS for our simple yet very ap-
preciated project, reaching out to our community! Please
keep everyone in the program in your prayers!!
Dear Cindy, Pam, and Prince of Peace Congregation,
I would like to extend a sincere thank you on behalf of Ap-
pleton EAST staff, students, and families. Your generosity
in supporting our students and families in need during the
course of this school year has been absolutely amazing,
and truly appreciated. We have had multiple students and
families benefit from the food donations each week. In
addition, we have recently had some homeless youth who
have sincerely appreciated the extra assistance in the
form of gas or grocery gift cards. We look forward to a con-
tinued partnership with Prince of Peace Church in the
years to come!
Thank you!

POP PAGE TURNERS BOOK CLUB
The POP Book Club meets in the library on the third Thursday of the Month at 1:30 pm. Our next meeting is June 21st. Come join us.
June’s book is Standing in The Rainbow
by Fannie Flagg.
Synopsis: Along with Neighbor Dorothy, the lady with the smile in her voice, whose daily radio broadcasts keep us delightfully informed on all the local news, we also meet Bobby, her ten-year-old son, des-tined to live a thousand lives, most of them in his imagination; Norma and Macky Warren and their 98 year-old Aunt Elner; the oddly sexy and charismatic Hamm Sparks, who starts off in life as a tractor salesman and ends up selling himself to the whole state and almost the entire country; and the two women who love him as differently as night and day. Then there is Tot Whooten, the beautician whose luck is as bad as her hairdressing skills; Bea-trice Woods, the Little Blind Songbird; Cecil Figgs, the Funeral King; and the fabulous Minnie Oatman, lead vocalist of the Oat-
man Family Gospel Singers.
The time is 1946 until the present. The town is Elmwood Springs, MO...in the midst of the mostly joyous transition from war to
peace, aiming toward a dizzyingly bright future.
Once again, Fannie Flagg gives us a story of richly human charac-ters, the saving graces of the once-maligned middle classes and small-town life, and the daily contest between laughter and tears. Fannie truly writes from the heartland, and her storytelling is, to
quote Time, "utterly irresistible." All are welcome to join us!
ATTENTION SENIORS OF ALL AGES!

MISSION POSSIBLE
PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH 5
This year Prince of Peace is working with seven other faith groups to build a FIVE bedroom, two bath house at 971 Stead Dr.,
Menasha. Volunteers are needed through August 10. Volun-teers are needed for a variety of construction tasks as well as meal preparation and site support. No construction experience is necessary, just a willingness to help others! Signing up to help is easy. This year there’s a greater variety of dates to choose from! Instead of assigning specific days to each congregation as in the past, now all dates are open to all congre-gations. So the sooner we sign up, the more dates we will have available to choose from. Simply visit the Interfaith build link to sign up: https://foxcitieshabitat.volunteerhub.com/lp/interfaith/ After you sign up, we would also appreciate it if you would let Aaron Juhl (920-522-2177) know that you signed up so he can keep track of how many Prince of Peace folks are participating. Thank you! You may also contact him with any questions you may have about the project. We appreciate your consideration and hope you will get involved in this great ministry opportunity!
CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST HELPERS WANTED!

CALLING ALL BAKERS!
We are in need of Sunday fellowship-hour
baked goods for the summer months.
Please consider sharing a gift of baked goods
by signing up on the “Calling All Bakers” form
on the narthex kitchen refrigerator. Each
baker should plan on 4-5 dozen cookies, bars,
cinnamon rolls or other baked goods of their choice. Not only
does this gift enhance the fellowship time but it goes a long way
in helping with our expenses. Thank you for your gift and time!

My experience attending the East Central Synod of
Wisconsin 2019 Synod Assembly as a delegate was a
positive one. This was my first time attending the event
and I can comfortably say it left an everlasting impression.
The two-day, action-packed agenda included music by
some fascinating and very talented musicians from all
over the globe, Glocal Musicians. Bishop Gerald Mansholt
provided worship each morning, as well as Bishop Matt
Gunter who also contributed on Friday morning. A healing
service was offered the first day. The theme of this year’s
synod assembly was “We are Church for the Sake of the
World.” It was interesting to hear the global perspective on
how churches serve today in this ever-changing, diversified
world. The Rev. Sunitha Mortha, Director for Mission
Formation with the ELCA Global Mission Unit, provided a
very compelling vision to engage & inspire us.
There were fellowship opportunities which provided
networking with like-minded people. I crossed paths with
some interesting people I would have never met otherwise.
I also have learned a lot about how the church works on a
higher level. There were discussions on budgets, cam-
paigns, resolutions etc., to name a few. It was an honor
and a blessing to represent Prince of Peace as a delegate
and If you are ever presented a chance to attend, I highly
recommend it.
Grace and blessings,
Kathy Keller
2019 SYNOD ASSEMBLY REVIEWS
JUNE 2019 • PRINTS OF PEACE 8
We recently had the privilege of representing Prince of
Peace at the 2019 East Central Synod of Wisconsin As-
sembly. The title of the assembly was “We are Church for
the Sake of the World.” A major focus was on recognizing
and understanding diversity in its many forms (cultural,
gender, social, racial, etc.) and how we can positively im-
pact diversity as individuals and as a church.
Thursday night we attended “God's Story, Our Story”, a
musical event led by the ELCA Glocal team of musicians, a
group of approximately 175 musicians from around the
world. The 12 musicians at our conference were members
from the USA as well as abroad. It was an interactive event
and we sang songs together in several different lan-
guages. How uplifting to know that no matter what our lan-
guage, we all praise the same God. The Glocal music team
was a big part of the Friday and Saturday events as well.
Of course the agenda for Friday and Saturday included
synod business and voting. However, we also worshiped
and were entertained with lessons and stories of how we
meet the needs of the world through “mission,” the con-
cept of joyful giving, the reality and challenges of living in a
world of declining church influence, and thoughts of how
our world views may be biased or structured based on our
life experiences. We also participated in a “healing ser-
vice,” which we thought was very powerful.
The following points were the most interesting thoughts
and questions we took note of:
• Our world is in a time of drought when it comes to
hope, peace, love, joy and community. Our church is
encouraged to be lightening on the horizon promising
rain (hope), the water of life in a time of drought. At
times we have a fear of reaching out and making our-
selves vulnerable, but God can and will strengthen us to
show mercy, forgiveness of sin, acts of kindness, grace
and love.
• Bishop Mansholt spoke of the realities of the world
we live in today. We see climate change, school shoot-
ings and declining church attendance. It seems religion
has lost its standing in the home and in our political
world, making it feel like we are surrounded by hope-
lessness. Our calling is to stand firm and continue to
reach out in faith, hope, trust and love.
• When you wear glasses, you cannot see the glasses
themselves; you only see through the lenses. The
lenses bring shapes and color and meaning into view.
We too, filter our views of the world. Our values and ex-
periences (our “glasses”) influence us and how we re-
late to each other. They are part of our “story” and our
individual stories shape our perception of reality; they
make us who we are. We know our story and God's
story but what about the other person's story? What
about someone from another culture? They may wear
different glasses than us. Listening and trying to under-
stand another person's story can help us bridge gaps
and create connection.
• Cultures are like icebergs. The “tip” is what you see
(clothing, language, food, etc.). But there is so much
more. Hidden under the water are the things you don't
see (concepts of justice, notions of leadership, child
rearing, modesty in dress, etc.). What is underneath the
water gives meaning to the culture and influences its
norms and values. Your culture is learned, shaped, pat-
terned, formed and informed through your story and
your “glasses.” Your glasses may never view things the
same way as someone from another culture. However,
we should be curious about, and respectful of, our dif-
ferences. Our unconscious biases can drive us but we
should try not to judge and be so cued in on ourselves
that we don't recognize or appreciate the value of our
differences.
In closing, we would like to thank the POP congregation
for allowing us to participate in this event. We have
gained greater knowledge and appreciation for the
works of our church, the synod and the global ELCA Lu-
theran Church.
Peace and Blessings, Ron & Carol Rank

THANK YOU! Prince of Peace Meets Its Goal! Thanks to all of you who wrote your letters. Our offi-cial count at the moment is 104 letters in support of this year's Bread for the World Offering of Letters!
This is our first time surpassing 100 letters!
Thanks to George Mbatia for joining the Advocacy Team in hosting the Offering of Letters this year and sharing real life experiences of children in Kenya. Bread for the World asks us to report the number of letters to each representa-tive. By returning your letters to church you help our team and Bread for the World gauge our impact.
If you already mailed your letters, that's fine. We just ask that you let Advocacy Team know who you wrote or e-mailed by replying to this message so our numbers are reported accurately.

CONGRATULATIONS Confirmation Class of 2019!
(See class photo on back cover)
The Class of 2019 sure has had a year filled with build-
ing connections to Christ, the Congregation and the
Community! They spent this final year learning about the
Old and New Testaments of the Bible, as well as the life
of a Lutheran. Throughout their journey, they’ve put their
hands to God's work, participating in many service pro-
jects along the way - making many tie blankets that were
donated to multiple sites in the community, creating
menus and providing the food for menus for families at
Prince of Peace, making survival kits for the Appleton
Police officers, making Resurrection Eggs for the Faith
Formation kids, and going Christmas shopping for 3
children from the family we adopted through the Adopt-A
-Family program to help make their Christmas more spe-
cial.
As the final step in their Confirmation Faith Journey, they
participated in Faith Mentoring which gave them an op-
portunity to spend time connecting with an adult of their
choosing, for the purpose of discussing how each other’s
faith exists in their lives, what has brought them joy, and
many other facets of their faith. This experience offered
yet another experience to build up their foundation of
faith and spirituality. Thank you to the special adults who
accepted the call to be a faith mentor to create new con-
nections of faith for these wonderful youth!
On April 24th, we gathered with parents, mentors and
Confirmands to celebrate our 9th graders’ milestone of
affirming their Baptism, by enjoying a meal together
while discussing a few faith-based questions as we
dined. We further connected with each other through an
ice breaker where everyone was given a list of questions
to answer by someone new to them, with a cool photo
booth to capture the moments created with new-found
friends! It was an evening of yummy food (sooo many
cupcakes!), fellowship, laughter and celebration!
Finally on April 29th, the Confirmation Class of 2019
affirmed their Baptism at Prince of Peace. This class of
twenty-five Prince of Peace youth stood before God, their
families, and the Congregation affirming the promises
that were made on behalf of them at their Baptisms.
Candles were presented to each by their parents as a
passing on of those promises, then by lighting the can-
dles, was a symbol of affirmation for themselves.
(see below) Thank you to all of you who helped in one
way or another to make Confirmation Sunday a day to
remember for our Confirmands!

MORE FUN CONNECTIONS
PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH 11
EARTH: A SPIRITUAL MATTER
From the ELCA social statement on Caring for Creation: Vision, Hope and Justice: “We of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America are deeply concerned about the environment, locally and globally, as mem-bers of this church and as members of society. Even as we join the political, economic, and scientific discussion, we know care for the earth to be a profoundly spiritual matter.” Prince of Peace Social Concerns ministry is looking for individuals who might be interested in devot-ing some time to this important spiritual matter. We would like to further examine the crisis we have before us and then assist our congregation in living out God’s word to care for the world He created. If you’re interested in this topic, please connect with either Ron Jones (915-0898) or Trisha Kostelny at (734-4927).
