    HFMA and CSUN Event Report

Victoria Morgan, FHFMAHFMA Southern California Chapter Director Board Advisor, Region 11 Symposium Event Manager, Yerger Coordinator

On November 18, HFMA So Cal and the Health Administration Student Assocation at CSUN held a Woman in Health Adminstration Leadership Workshop.

Over 50 graduate and under-graduate Health Administration students were treated to a Panel discussion with panel members: Mary (Kathy) Hammack, CFO, Cedar Sinai -

Marina Del Rey Hospital; Gayathri S. Jith, Sr. VP, Strategy & Ambulatory Services, Valley Presbyterian Medical Center; Margaret R Peterson, PhD, President, California Hospital Medical Center and session moderator: Victoria Morgan, FHFMA, Revenue Cycle Consulant.

The panel discussed how they progressed into their current positions and the impact coaches, mentors, or

  • champions have had on their career progression. The students asked how to find the perfect job and/or how to get experience, as well as what they should expect with respect to work life balance. The next joint event with CSUN and HFMA will be a Revenue Cycle 101 class scheduled for February 2016.

The Chapter Continues to Connect with Members and Local Students with Revenue Cycle 101 Education

Joe PerryHFMA Southern California Chapter Secretary Educational Outreach Committee Chair As a continuation of the chapters outreach to students enrolled in healthcare administration programs at local colleges and universities, representatives from the chapter held a half-day educational program on Saturday, September 19. The program was on Mastering the Revenue Cycle/Revenue Cycle 101 and was held for members of the Health Administration Student Association (HASA) at California State University,

Northridge. More than 30 students were provided with an education of key concepts on the claims process. The half-day program also included a panel discussion with local industry leadership that fielded questions on what challenges current leadership are facing, what was each individual's career path, and how to prepare for future careers in the healthcare field.

One of the members of HASA, Philip Sagadraca, commented that he found the seminar to be very informative as it gave a knowledgeable sense to the dynamics and strategic value of the Revenue Cycle. He added that, The information that I gained will not only help me now but it will help me in the future in regards to my career in health care management.

Amanda Rawlinson, President of HASA, appreciated the additional overview of concepts and information that is not explored inside the classroom. She also greatly appreciated the panel discussion that was included with the session. The panel discussion was highly informative, motivating and extremely helpful. It gave us an opportunity to network with professional executives and Chief Financial Officers outside of the schools faculty. The panel discussed their career paths and gave us insight on what jobs may be available when we graduate. In addition, they informed us about what they look for when hiring someone, such as needed skills, experience and knowledge.

The chapter also provided several other opportunities for outreach education with the Mastering the Revenue Cycle program in our regional areas. In the months of September through December, the chapter has been able to provide sessions in Santa Clarita, Fountain Valley, San Bernardino, and Irvine. Best practices in customer service was the focus for the November 20 event at Memorial Care in Fountain Valley where several members of the Memorial Care team helped to support an excellent discussion of best practice application in real world types of situations. A special thank you to all of our hosting sites and facilities for their support in making all of our recent education events such a success.

Glorious Weather, Laughter & Wine Highlight the 4th Annual Vince Acquisto Memorial Golf Tournament

Richard AnzaloneHFMA Southern California Chapter Photographer More than 85 golfers teed it up at the 4th Annual HFMA of Northern California Vince Acquisto Memorial Golf Tournament in Danville, California, on Monday, October 12, at the Blackhawk Country Clubs famous Lake Course. The winning foursome, in a fun scramble format, were Susan Acquisto, Dr. Bob Kerlan, Ed Moses, and Joy

  • Stephenson Laws. The group posted a best ball score of 56. Other prize winners on a 90-plus degree Fall day included: Mike Hanson (Closest to the Hole), Hitesh Mistry/Melinda Gross (Straightest Drive), Joy Stephenson Laws/Ed Moses (Longest Drive), Carlos Jimenez (Putting Contest), and Joseph Chow/Wende Weckbacher (Marshmallow Drive). For the first time, a brand new Lexus was available to any golfer scoring a hole-in-one on the Par 3, 10th hole. Unfortunately, the Lexus drove off unclaimed by any golfer.

With the help of Dixon Golf, the tournament golfers also helped raise money for The Bili Project Foundation with a donation on the Par 3, 7th hole. Guaranteed a birdie for their groups monetary contribution, many golfers tested their new eco-friendly Dixon golf balls on the water hole. After the round of golf, more than 110 golfers and dinner guests enjoyed a cocktail hour featuring a Silent Auction featuring Golf Memorabilia, including a Phil Mickelson signed 2004 Masters Pin Flag and a brand new Callaway Pro Golf Bag signed by Annika Sorenstam, and many of Northern Californias finest Wines. All proceeds from the silent/live auction and the Grand Prize Raffle of a Two-Night stay at the famed Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay, benefitted The Bili Project Foundation. More than $12,500 was raised from the evening event for the cause.

Chapter Membership Proves that They Know How to Cook in Providing Meals to Local Homeless and Mission Outreach in San Bernardino

Joe Perry HFMA Southern California Chapter Secretary Educational Outreach Committee Chair On Sunday, November 8, several members joined local volunteers to support the preparation and serving of a meal at the San Bernardino Central City Lutheran Mission. Located near downtown San Bernardino in one of the poorest urban communities in the country, the mission is housed on the campus of a former church and is focused to provide assistance for those with issues of health, housing, and education. While the

mission mainly focuses on providing services to the local homeless men and at risk youth, they also provide education and other services for women and children in the local community.

Under the coordination of chapter board member Denise Ransdell, 25 members and their family members assisted in preparation of a full meal for 74 individuals. In addition to the meal, the chapter also coordinated the collection of toiletries, socks, and other hygiene products that were placed into more than 100 giveaway bags for the men at the shelter.

Local chapter member Genaro Grajeda was part of the volunteer team for the outreach event. An HFMA member since 2014, he enjoyed the opportunity to work together with fellow HFMA members in the service to the community. He also enjoyed the opportunity to have his daughter join him in being a part of the event as they had recently seen a short Los Angeles Times documentary about the economic

  • challenges that San Bernardino has had. We had an idea of what was going on in our city, volunteering and seeing the documentary definitely gave us a whole different

perspective. It was a great learning experience for both my daughter and I, and if anything highlighted the needs of our community and provided us with a basis for future volunteer opportunities.

Several members agreed that the reward of being able to give back to the community in need was well worth the work for the evening. As Genaro put it, giving back not only allows us to better represent our industry but it also helps accomplish the overall mission of many of our organizations. A very special thank you to Denise Ransdell for her efforts in coordinating this opportunity for our chapter, and thank you to all of the members and families that were able to attend and support the mission through the event.

Walking Tour of L.A.'s Downtown Skyline

Erin QuillenHFMA Southern California Chapter Social and Networking Director

On Sunday, November 15, 2015, an intimate group of Southern California HFMA members toured the modern skyline of downtown Los Angeles. We met at the Pershing Square ice skating rink, where LA Conservancy and past-HFMA President, Gordon Johnson began telling the tails about the City of Angels.

We learned about the different architectural styles of old and new Los Angeles, heard anecdotes about the emerging city, saw timelines and old photos depicting what once was in the Los Angeles Library, and explored many hidden in plain sight plazas and skyscrapers of Bunker Hill. A few hidden treasures we found were the California Plaza and the Water Court, the Maguire Gardens, and Angels Flight.

After crossing floating footbridges over the busy thoroughfares and learning about the beautiful sculptures and fountains of Los Angeles, we ended the tour across the street from the Million Dollar Theater in the Bradbury building.

There is such a rich history of downtown Los Angeles! Come explore with us on our next walking tour tentatively set in Spring 2016.

  • Manhattan Beach A Perfect Backdrop for Our Winter Program!

Kiet LamHFMA Southern California Chapter Vice President Program Planning Committee Chair Winter in Southern CA - I think not. Pure sunshine, 70 degrees, Palm tree lined golf course, and a beautiful patio lunch at the Manhattan Beach Marriott. That was our perfect setting for the "Winter Program".

Kim Charland from Panacea Healthcare kicked things off with a comprehensive and deep dive into CMSs Value Based Purchasing Program, primarily focusing on the key principles associated with hospital quality reporting. I appreciated Kims summary of the various CMS Hospital Value Based Purchasing case studies, especially her digestible explanation of the statistical analysis and results performed by CMS. It is eye opening to see the correlation (or lack therefore) between each quality reporting metric and a hospitals total performance score. Kims presentation not only reaffirmed the complexity of the VBP Program, but also highlighted the need to dedicate more resources towards understanding the financial impact of these quality measures.

Continuing on the Value theme, Martin Dunn from Gaine Healthcare shared some very interesting insights into the correlation between socioeconomic factors such as income/education levels and patient risk factors. Martin made a compelling argument in support of devoting more resources to understanding the impact of these non-clinical factors on overall cost of patient care.

Providing a nice balance to these topics of value and cost were speakers Kurt Mosley from Merritt Hawkins and George Colman from the law firm of Stephenson, Acquisto, and Colman. George continued to impart his many years of expertise and knowledge on our chapter with a relevant discussion on hot legal topics impacting our industry. Lastly, rounding out our general sessions and providing a perfect balance to the in-depth financial topics was Kurts fun and energetic presentation on the evolution of physician practice. Kurts presentation was a good reminder that physicians continue to play a pivotal role in our industry.

Thank you to all of our speakers, especially those who traveled from afar to join us in sunny Southern California. All presentations will be available on our chapter website for download (http://www.hfma-socal.org/chapterinfo/education-materials.html ).

Please join us at the Monrovia Doubletree Hotel on March 16th for our Spring Education Program!

  • While the overall turnout for the Government Programs track at the November 19 education session was low (darn cost reports!), I was quite pleased with the quality of speakers and the topics covered. The chapter brought in Kim Charland of Panacea Solutions and publisher of VBPMonitor. Despite the potential nature of VBP discussion being so statistical as to put an entire audience to sleep, Kim was

engaging and went beyond the numbers to explain the financial impact and what we should be doing to analyze the data and better help our facilities improve our results. Our afternoon speakers, Elizabeth Elson and Anil Shankar from Foley and Lardner LLP, focused on 340B and provided, not only a comprehensive overview, but fantastic insights into the proposed Omnibus guidance recently released. The proposed changes will alter the program in big ways and will have significant financial ramifications. We managed to get through the content with some additional time to spare and Elizabeth and Anil were kind enough to engage our group in additional open discussion around the proposed changes to hospital based clinics. Have you heard of the new site of service designation 19 for off-site hospital-based clinics located more than 250-yards from the main hospital versus the more traditional on-campus site of service 22? It was a fun-filled, educational day and I missed seeing so many of my reimbursement peers. I know the November dates are difficult with cost reporting deadlines, but I appreciate those that were able to attend and I look forward to seeing all of you in March.

Sushi and Salsa at the Annual Holiday Party

Erin QuillenHFMA Southern California Chapter Social and Networking Director On Friday, December 4, approximately 70 members of the Southern California Chapter of HFMA joined together to celebrate the holiday season at Elevate Lounge in Downtown Los Angeles. The location was spectacular, offering wonderful views of the city in one of Los Angeles hippest skyscraper nightclubs.

After enjoying hors doeuvres and an adult beverage from the hosted bar, we all sat for a served dinner from Takami Sushi & Robata Restaurant. We noshed on delicious small bits from edamame and creamy rock shrimp tempura to lemon-albacore rolls and Chilean sea bass skewers, just to name a few.As dinner wrapped up, our special guests arrived! Tibor and Yanni, local professional salsa dancers and instructors, took the stage and performed a combination of Salsa, Lambada and Bachata. Then they encouraged us to join them on the dance floor for some beginners salsa instruction. Adorned with blinking jelly rings and glow sticks, the dance party was electric! Before the night was over, we had our traditional HFMA raffle. Our lucky member, Angelica Del Villar won a 7-day, 6-night stay in a beachfront condo in Puerto Vallarta! Congratulations Angelica! As the clock ticked 10, the holiday party transformed into a public night club. Many danced the night away, flashing their newly learned salsa moves, and others socialized at the VIP section roped off for HFMA members, concluding what turned out to be a great holiday celebration. The chapter would like to send a special thanks to Progressive Management Systems for helping to make our holiday party great by purchasing three tables and sponsoring the HFMA raffle. Happy Holidays!

January Lunch and Learn Webinar will Focus on How to Prepare for Comprehensive Joint Replacement Payment Model According to CMS Final Regulations

Joe PerryHFMA Southern California Chapter Secretary

  • Educational Outreach Committee Chair The chapter will present the next Lunch and Learn webinar on January 21. Content experts from the BDO Center for Healthcare Excellence and Innovation will present on a topic of Preparing your Organization for CMS Mandatory Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CCJR) Payment Model: Where to Start. The webinar will provide a review of the November 16 final regulations on CCJR and how these will effect future

reimbursement. The presentation will also cover program cost planning and how to get started with negotiations. Because of the emphasis surrounding the episode of care related to the CCJR procedures, the webinar will also share strategies for the management of provider/vendor networks, and provide an overview of the role for clinical analytics and supply chain metrics in planning.

Be sure to check the chapter events page at http://www.hfma-socal.org/events/chapterevents.html for more details on all of the chapters upcoming education events.
