Barraba Central School Term 1 – Week 9 25 March 2013 principal’s report Last week we had an enjoyable week with many activities keeping the school busy. Senior Citizen Week saw the residents of Richardson House enjoy the songs sung by the K-6 students and the bowls afternoon attended by Year 10 went well. I hope to make the bowls competition become a more regular event on our calendar. Special thanks to Mr Chand and the Bowling Club committee for their organisation and execution of the afternoon. Also last Thursday Harmony Day was enjoyed by all and was a fantastic success. Well done to all of the teachers and students involved. This week we introduce our Senior Classes: Year 11 and their Year Advisor Mr Ken Thomas and Year 12 and their Year Advisor Mrs Jennifer Longstaff. Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Rupert Richardson Art Show at the Golf Club. Despite the power being out for some time the Rotary committee and everyone involved should be commended for an excellent well organised event. A reminder that our termly calendars that appear in our weekly newsletter may change slightly from week to week so please keep an eye on up-coming events. I will attempt to highlight these changes however it would be great if all parents could please ensure that they have the most recent calendar on their fridge. We are again offering children in Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 the opportunity to take part in the University of New South Wales Competitions at a cost of $7-$10 per competition completed. These competitions have a reputation for being very challenging. Please contact the school if you require any additional information. Parents wishing for their child to sit these exams will need to contact the school by 02/04/2013. Last week we had an enjoyable week with many activities keeping the school busy.

These competitions have a reputation for being very challenging. Please contact the school if you require any additional information. ChildFund Visit Year 5/6 Irving Last Wednesday students in Year 5/6 Irving were visited by members of the ChildFund organization to establish a connection with a class in Laos. We made movies and photos to upload to our class in Laos. Laos is our study of another culture and we are delighted to be able to continue the relationship with ChildFund that was initiated by Mrs Carter several years ago. Our class will be working with ChildFund throughout the year to learn more about the children and culture of the HMON (Mon) people in this remote rural village. We will also share our school and town with them.

Year 11 Biology Ecosystems Studies

Excursion

As part of the Preliminary course in Biology, the

students must undertake field studies to

measure and report on both Biotic and Abiotic

features of a given environment. The students

have been undertaking these studies in Crowdy

Bay National Park. The class travelled to the

site on Wednesday 13th March and returned on

Friday 15th March. The students measured

abiotic features over a 24hr period as well as

profiled diagrams of transects studying

abundance and distribution of species in the

area. The students camped in tents and cooking

was done on the BBQ’s provided. A great time

was had by all in attendance and students are to

be commended on their excellent behaviour.

2012 P&C Presidents Report 2012 proved to be a very interesting year for me as the President of the P&C. I would like to extend a huge thank you to all committee members. It is a team effort to make our P&C work effectively. In particular I would like to extend my thanks to Tracy, Rhonda and Susan for their help and input. Thank you to all the staff, parents, grandparents and carers for their support at meetings and assistance when needed with fundraising endeavours. We witnessed some new changes in 2012. These include a new Canteen Supervisor; a big thank you to Kelly for the smooth transition into her new role as the Canteen Supervisor. We saw changes in the senior uniforms reflecting positively in the school and community. Newsletter format and title page was changed and made to look more appealing to the community. Rhonda also secured new advertisers for the 2013 newsletter. She was also able to get additional donations for Annual Prize Giving. We had great success with our Cross Country Fundraiser. This was a very successful fundraiser and Jennylyn has already secured a booking for the 2013 carnival. This will give the P&C another opportunity to fundraise. Well done to Jennylyn for getting all the schools together and thanks to those who helped with the fundraising. I would also like to mention some of the financial contributions that the P&C has made during the year. These include:

Annual prize giving

Library books

Accident Insurance Cover for students

Roses for the garden

Shirts & Blazers for the Leadership team

Financial support to State Final Players

Royal Far West

Document Camera (will be paid this year)

New uniforms for team sports (will be paid when invoiced) The P&C had the opportunity to work with the acting principal, Brian Norman, for the last 12 months. I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new principal and his family to our school and community. We the P&C look forward to working together with the school and making it into another successful year. Thank you Sue Reed

General Reminder

Library books A reminder to all students and parents to please check at home for any library books that are overdue so that these can be

returned to the school library as soon as possible. A library slip will be sent home with the cost of the book if you have misplaced it.
