Priory Mill Garth Hospital is a 21 bedded locked rehabilitation and recovery service suitable for men aged 18 years and over. The hospital focuses on active rehabilitation and recovery for those with mental illness and personality disorders.

We believe anyone with a mental health condition should be given the best chance possible to lead a happy and fulfilling life and our aim is to provide individuals with the confidence and skills to move or return to the community.

We promote social inclusion and our links to the local community enable our patients to take part in voluntary work, education and have access to local support networks. We also actively encourage families and carers to be a part of the treatment process and they can attend review meetings when possible.

Treatment programme

Situated in the Meanwood area of Leeds, we are just two miles north of Leeds city centre, which allows for easy access to a vibrant community with useful amenities that our patients can enjoy. The hospital provides a safe, friendly and welcoming environment ideal for building therapeutic and trusting relationships, to promote rehabilitation.

We adopt an integrated treatment approach and our care plans are developed alongside the patient. We encourage patients to be a part of the decisions made for their treatment and this is reviewed every two weeks in patient review meetings.

Everyone receives an individualised timetable of activities available seven days a week, which can include one-to-one or group therapy consisting of cognitive behavioural therapy, anger management and problem solving.

The expertise and vast knowledge within our multidisciplinary team allows us to manage and treat even the most complex cases as well as individuals with personality disorder alongside other mental illness. The team includes:

A consultant psychiatrist

A senior charge nurse

Mental health nurses and those who specialise in learning difficulties

Occupational therapists and assistants

Activities co-ordinators

Healthcare assistants

Psychology input

Patient profile

The following criteria details who will benefit from active rehabilitation at Priory Hospital Mill Garth:

Males over 18 years of age

Those requiring higher levels of physical and relational security than provided by community services, but do not meet the criteria for secure services

May be detained under the Mental Health Act, be subject to Ministry of Justice Restrictions or Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards

Individuals who present with challenging behaviours including self-harm

Those requiring a period of stabilisation before they commence their rehabilitation programme

Those needing a safe and secure environment to reduce risk to themselves and/or others and build the skills for independence

Require structured treatment with the right balance between therapeutic and social activities
