The Lions Youth of the Year Program is a project of the Lions Clubs of Australia supported by National Australia Bank. The program is designed to encourage student interest in leadership and the qualities required to take an active and constructive role in the community. They also have the opportunity to learn leadership, management and community service skills from groups of professional men and women. The program seeks a high level of academic, leadership, sporting, public speaking and citizenship achievements in its potential winners. By emphasising these qualities it hopes to provide outstanding role models for young people and an overall increase in the confidence of young men and women. The program is an excellent means of assisting young people and promoting the essential role of leadership development and community service organisations.

The main activities involved in the running of the Lions Youth of the Year Program include:• Initial promotion in schools and local communities;• Judging of candidates across all levels;• Selection and announcement of the National Winner;• Arrangements for the state winners’ trip to the Lions International Youth Camp in New Zealand and to the National Winner’s home state.

The Program begins in June/July and culminates with final judging and the announcements of the winners at the Multiple District Convention in May the following year.• Club judging• Regional judging• District judging• State finals• National final

The Program offers an outstanding opportunity for entrants to vie for major prizes.• Each state winner of the Program will travel to New Zealand to attend a Lions International Youth

Camp followed by a visit to the National Winner’s home state. Each state winner will also receive $500 spending money.

• The National Winner receives $5,000 presented on their 18th Birthday

The success of the project relies on the commitment and involvement of Lions Clubs throughout Australia. The value of a program like the Youth of the Year Program is derived from being able to take part in a worthwhile community service activity. Schools are encouraged to work with Lions and include the program as part of their curriculum.

NAB is proud to be the principal partner of the Lions Youth of the Year Program. This partnership has established records for the length of time that NAB has sponsored a community based program. It provides a wonderful opportunity for our employees across Australia to experience first hand the exceptional qualities of our young Australians.Every year, close to 400 NAB employees have a chance to connect with the local communities they work in by helping to judge the event. The Lions Youth of the Year Program is just one of the ways NAB is creating opportunities for the next generation of outstanding young Australians to achieve their dreams and aspirations.
