A strategy rooted in

The vision of HFG/K is an AIDS-free generation and a world free from HIV. Our mission is to revolutionize HIV prevention interventions and contribute to the improved health and well-being of youth aged 10 to 24 years in Kenya by leveraging public, private, and community partnerships.

To deliver this, HFG/K has created a youth lifestyle brand called G-PANGE that connects with young people. With the support of celebrity ambassadors, social media, radio, TV, and popular publications, young people have learned to associate G-PANGE with living a healthy lifestyle.

G-PANGE calls upon youth individually and collectively to take charge and be active in protecting their health, lives, and destinies by leveraging the information, education, life skills, economic opportunities, and resources available to them. The brand has five pillars:

The Partnership for an HIV-Free Generation, Kenya (HFG/K), brings the public and private

sectors together to create innovative programs that help young people live healthy and

productive lives. HFG/K combines the innovations, know-how, and influence of the private

sector with the technical expertise of government and development partners. Together,

we are creating solutions that inspire positive behavior change in youth. Any company or organization

with an interest in Kenya’s future can get involved with HFG/K.

We must now mobilize every tool at our disposal to finally achieve prevention programs

that touch young people at every point on the road to adulthood and reach them with

messages and support that transmit skills and hope for an HIV-free future.

The Partnership for an HIV-Free Generation brings us new partners—and through them,

dynamic and innovative tools that have never before been applied to this important work.

~US Ambassador Michael E. Ranneberger at the corporate launch of The Partnership for an HIV-Free Generation, Kenya, December 5, 2008

HFG/K engages youth through G-PANGE road shows featuring entertainment, HIV-prevention information, and health services.

HFG/K, established in December 2008, is affiliated with The Partnership for an HIV-Free Generation (HFG), a global public-private collaboration formed in 2007 and championed by the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). The mission of HFG/K is to revolutionize HIV prevention interventions and contribute to the well-being of youth.

• G-Jue: encourages youth to know their HIV status and that of their partner.

• G-Fahamishe: persuades youth to increase their knowledge and understanding, pursue information, and develop skills.

• G-Inue: endorses the importance of youth engaging in economic opportunities, skill development, and entrepreneurial activities.

• G-Amini: underscores the importance of building self-esteem and assertiveness to overcome peer pressure and make smart choices and enhance family and community efficacy.

• G-Kinge: a call to action for youth to protect themselves from infection by avoiding risky behavior and adopting safer sex practices.

Private-sector partnership programs

• Shuga is a captivating TV drama series about youth faced with complex choices that reveal how poor decisions and HIV affect their lives, families, and friends. Produced in partnership with MTV Networks and the Staying Alive Foundation, season one aired in Kenya and 72 countries globally. In Kenya the series reached more than 100,000 youth through local screenings and peer education sessions at community outreach events. The series won a gold award at the World Media Festival. Season two—Shuga: Love, Sex, Money—was launched in early 2012 and continues to be an effective tool that engages youth in discussions around sensitive issues.

• Pamoja Mtaani is an interactive computer video game developed in partnership with Warner Bros. The entertaining game teaches players how to protect, advance, and live life in the “hood” and also incorporates HIV prevention messages. More than 14,000 young people have played the game to date, and an additional 300 gained computer skills.

• Young Writers Development Program is a six-month internship dubbed G-PANGE Pen Tribe that recruited 11 youth to be mentored by the Standard Media Group. The aim is to nurture their writing talents and publish G-PANGE columns in Pulse and Next Generation magazines in weekly one-page pullout sections to promote the G-PANGE philosophy.

• Entrepreneurial and Vocational Skills Training is a program established by the partnership of HFG/K, Africa Youth Trust, and HOPE worldwide Kenya. It aims to train 10,000 young people in work and business skills, including hair dressing. This partnership also provides a variety of health services and communicates life skills. The program helps young people build skills to make a living and a healthy future for themselves.

• Dreams for Our Daughters is a first-of-its-kind program that makes and distributes Huru, a washable, reusable sanitary towel made by women’s groups and distributed at cost. Through this partnership, 40,000 Huru kits were manufactured and distributed, and 12,000 youth attended peer education sessions and received information on sexual and reproductive health and HIV and AIDS. School absenteeism among girls in the target population decreased from 67 percent to 1 percent, which improved school performance for 85 percent of girls and increased HIV awareness for 79 percent.

Key focus areas for action

Economic empowerment: This platform creates employment opportunities for youth through training in entrepreneurship and life skills and through internships, mentorships, and apprenticeships. It also provides micro-credit or seed money for youth-business start-ups.

Girl empowerment: With HIV rates higher in girls and women, the girl empowerment platform focuses on lifting the self-esteem and status of young women through education, economic empowerment, and life skills. It includes interventions that help girls stay in school.

Mass media: This platform spreads messages about HIV prevention, education, and positive lifestyles through popular TV shows, radio, youth magazines in the Standard Newspaper, and more.

Digital technology: The digital technology platform reaches youth through mobile devices, social media, video games, and websites. Kenya has the highest number of people on the Internet and the fastest growing mobile device penetration in sub-Saharan Africa.

More ways to get involved: Whether your company or organization brings new products and services, creative ideas, marketing savvy, energetic employees, or other skills and assets, join the HIV-Free Generation and help build a healthier, stronger Kenya.

G-PANGE weekend road shows bring entertainment, economic

empowerment, and reproductive health services to youth.

Why participate in HFG/K?

• G-PANGE Annual Talent Explosion (GATE) nurtures the talents of youth in the performing and fine arts. It brings them before talent scouts while communicating health and HIV prevention messages to their peers. County, provincial, and national events attracted more than 10,000 youth and 50 implementing and private partners. Some 5,000 youth accessed wrap-around services including HIV counseling and testing and information on health and economic empowerment. GATE linked 260 youth to opportunities for mentorship, academic and talent scholarships, music recording deals, and short-term contracts.

• G-Jue One Million is a national campaign to promote voluntary HIV testing and counseling. One million youth under the age of 25 years participated. This initiative supports Kenya’s National AIDS Strategic Plan goal for 80 percent of the population to know their HIV status.

• Sakata Ball is a nationwide football competition sponsored by Safaricom and UNICEF. The monthly road

show offers a variety of innovative HIV prevention services through youth-organized social networks.

• The Nation Media Group partnership created the first live youth-owned and produced talk shows in Kenya. Ten aspiring radio presenters, producers, and writers were recruited by the Nation Media Group through the Easy FM (English) and QFM (Swahili) stations. The radio programs began airing weekly on these stations in January 2012.
