Home births

Stigma

Problem statement• Pregnant women and women going into labor in developing countries

lack the necessary equipment and medical aid to ensure a safe delivery• Deliveries are usually at home, due to long distances from hospitals,

and usually employ improper, unsafe, and unsanitary techniques• The use of these techniques likely result from poor living conditions

and lack of formal education of medical care • Goal: to develop a sustainable solution in order to increase the safety

of pregnancy focusing specifically on safety of home births• target demographic: project affects pregnant mother, family, and

perinatal baby• region of interest: Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern (highest maternal

mortality rates)• top three countries: Kenya (360), Ethiopia (350), Uganda

(310)• (for comparison: US is 21/100,000 live births)•
