In order to help me gain ideas for my ancillary tasks, I have decided to have a look at how Lawson promoted their debut album ‘Chapman Square’. Lawson are in the same genre as A Rocket to the Moon, this will enable me to gain ideas for how I am going to promote our music video. They have inspired me a lot for this project, as some of their songs have a similar storyline to our chosen song. It is important that I look at bands who are in the same genre so that my products will fit the codes and conventions of Alternative Rock and so that it suits people expectations. I am going to go through each of Lawsons promotion products and deconstruct features that they have used.

Album Front Cover:I like the mise-en-scene of the image. It has been taken in the woods, which connotes that it is very natural. I like the trees in the background and like how the light is shinning through them.

I like the use of the props, such as the sofas and object on the floor. This is quite unusual, it makes the cover more interesting and unique.

I really like the bold band title, the white font stand out a lot and contrasts against the image. The font is also quite different, with the A underlining the font, which I think looks quite good.

The name of the album also stands out, it is in the same font style and colour, making the cover look consistent and professional looking.

The use of lighting is good, I like the fact it is shinning from the right through the window. The reflection of the lighting is quite different, I think it works well and creates a good atmosphere for the cover.

I like the eye contact of Andy Brown, he is the main person in the band. It really helps to draws viewers in and persuades you to pick up and view the album.

Their clothing is very casual, in black jeans and shirts. The clothing colours work well within the album and help to show the natural atmosphere of the cover.

The colours users in the piece are all very natural, there are no bright neon colours used. All the colours blend in well together, which I think is an important aspect.

Their facial expressions are very natural, they are not smiling at the camera. They are all positioned in different places, this makes it varied and more interesting.

Album Tracklist:Each of the tracks are written in the same font, making it consistent and helping to link them all. Again, they are written in white, making a connection with the front cover. All the letters are in capitals, helps it to stand out more again the image background.There is a web address to allow users to access some bonus content, and also some information and the record label that Lawson are signed to.

Here is their official website address, this is helping to promote them more and encourages fans to view the website.

Also included here is an image of their record label, which is something I need to think about when creating my digipak.

The image is taken in a similar location to the front cover, as you can see lots of trees around. This helps to make the album consistent and shows that it has a linking house style.

The band are walking away from the cover, I think this works well considering it is on the back. They are all in the same clothing which again shows there is a house style running throughout the album.

Here is a barcode, a features that I need to include on my digipak.

Similarily to the front, the colours on the image are all very natural. I like the sand that they are walking alond and think that both this and the tress help to connote the natural environment.

Tour Poster:The same image has been used on the tour poster of which was used on their album. This helps to show that they connect and that the tour is to promote the new album.

Lawson is written in the same white font, it stand out a lot as it is in the centre of the page. When looking at the poster it is the first thing you see, which automatically makes it successful in promoting Lawson.

It is called the Chapman Square Tour, linking it to the album well, it has been underlined so again stand out well to viewers.

Bolder font has been used for the months of the tour, this helps to clearly divide up the tour dates and is a way viewers can easily see the date that they are looking for.

The colours used in the poster are all very natural, linking back to the album. The purple colour that has been used at the bottom works well and the album image like fades into it.

The tour dates are also written in a white font with capitalised letters. This links all the fonts and shows that the promotion has a consistent house style to it.

It has been laid out in columns, making it very clear and simple to read. The numbering is clear and simple too.

There is information and web addresses about how to purchase the tickets, which is important because otherwise people wouldn’t know where they can get the tickets from.

Here there is a bit included about the new album, this encourages fans to buy it and shows how they use cross-promotion on the products.

Limited Edition Album:This is a limited edition album that fans are able to purchase. It comes with more products other than just a CD, which attracts people to buy it. As I am creating a digipak, this will help me gain more ideas as to the type of thing that I could include in that.

The main factor that would attract fans to buy this is the fact you get lots more exclusive images. It contains individual images of each of the band members, so they can access more images of their favourite band member.

You get the limited edition album which contains a couple more tracks on it. For the limited edition album, gold font has been used instead of white making it look more special and appealing.

It all comes in a box, so everything can be stored in it nicely. The same font has been used on the box, helping to show how important a consistent house style is.

Which ever band member you prefer, fans are able to get individual images of them all. In the images, the band members are sat on sofas, helping to show a connection to the album front cover.

This image here links to the album, it is set in the same location, with the member wearing the same clothing. The lighting is also very similar to the album cover.

Fans may feel that by getting this they are getting more for their money. They get more images and songs and a box to store it all in. By creating a digipak, it’ll helpful create the same affect and people would be encourages to buy it.

Lawson Poster:This poster is successful in both promoting the band and their album.Their is an image with each of the band members in. They are all looking directly at the camera. This helps to draw viewers in and persuades them to read the poster.

Here is says each of the band members names and the part the play in the band (drum/guitar/sing). This helps to briefly give people more of an idea as to who they are and what they do.

The same font has been used for ‘Lawson’ which has used in the album cover, helping to show a connection and a that there products have a house style running throughout.

They are all wearing similar clothing, of dark shirts/tshirts. This helps to show that the band members themselves have a connection with each other.The image has been taken against a brick wall, I think that this looks quite good, and it shows how the are using the natural environment as a resource for their images.

Their names are written in a blue banner with a white capitalised font. It stand out a lot against the dark image and is clear and easy to read.

Billboard Promotion:When a single/album is released for real, then billboard promotions are used to promote it. Although my single is not being released, it is important that I look at billboard promotions to see how the real media industry would successful promote singles and albums.

Located near a bus stop which is a prime spot as lots of people will be passing by this point a lot, whether they are waiting for a bus or just travelling past.

Again, the same image has been used for the promotion. This really helps to show the connection between all of their products and shows how their house style is very strong and consistent.

‘Lawson’ stands out a lot, clearly showing viewers immediately how they are. Again the same font show the connection and link between the products.

This states when the album is released, this is important as viewers will need to know when they can purchase it. This stand out because of the large capital letter and the white font linking well to the rest of the text.

There is a brief mention about the top well-known singles that are in the album. This encourages people to purchase the album if they enjoyed those particular tracks.

Also included is their official website address. This encourages people to visit the address to find out more about the band and their music.

Official Website:Here is their official website, where they are able to promote their album and also where fans can find out more about them. By including the website address on each of the products, it encourage fans to visit it. They are able to purchase merchandise, access news, videos and photos etc.

You can see the use of the house style again. ‘Lawson’ is written in the same font throughout all their products.The same image has been used again, helping to show the connection and how each product is promoting the album.

Fans can find out more about each of the band members, find out more exclusive information.

Links to social networking sites, helping them to easily connect with their fans.

Social Networking Sites:These are screen shots of Lawsons Facebook and Twitter pages. It shows how artists nowadays can use social networking sites to interact with their fans and to globally promote their music. Many people nowadays use social networking sites, so it is an incredibly easy way for artists to reach their target audience. If I was to release the single for real, I would ensure I made social networking pages as they are a very successful way for artists to easily and cheaply promote themselves.
