PROPOSAL FOR MEDIA TEXT
MEDIUM/AUDIENCE
I aim to write an article for The Guardian online newspaper comparing The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Graham Norton
Show. My article would be found under the Culture, Television and Radio and Television and Radio Blog section as the two shows are part of television as they are well-known talk shows. The target audience for the medium in which my text will be written in, are
educated middle-class men and women as it is a broadsheet newspaper. As The Guardian is a left wing newspaper my article will
be suited to more liberal readers. My media text will be aimed specifically at readers who enjoy finding out about the latest news regarding culture and television. The article will not be too long; instead it will be short and concise to suit the target audience as
they may not necessarily have a lot of time to read.
CONTENT
My English Language Investigation was to find out linguistic differences within the two talk shows; looking specifically at the
language and gender of the talk show hosts. The topic of my article surrounds the idea of talk shows and what make them successful
without necessarily referring to linguists constantly, instead focusing on more general aspects. My article will be about the differences between the two talk shows and discuss whether it is possible to
compare the two. I will go in to detail about what elements of each show make them so successful and possibly give reference to the
gender and sexuality of each host and discuss how that aspect affects their success as talk show hosts. In addition I will include references to the cultural differences of each talk show, ratings,
awards and specific content in the individual shows that make them stand out.
CONVENTIONS
Typical conventions of this medium include tabs across the top of the page. The tab my article will come under is Culture and
Television, similar to the article below. It will also include links to social media sites such as twitter and facebook to allow readers to share the article if they like it. My article will include images that
support the text to make it more appealing to read, rather than just a large page of text. Other conventions include adverts along the
side of the page as it is an online medium thus interactivity is important. There are also links to other related stories or stories under another topic, allowing readers to explore The Guardians
online medium as they wish, as they would be able to do if they were reading a printed copy of the paper. The general colour
scheme of the webpage include pink, dark purple, white, black and blue for the links, which I aim to follow in my own media text. The
title of the article is noticeably larger and bolder than the rest of the text, which I will copy and is establishes what the article is about
immediately. This is followed by a brief introduction to draw readers in and lead into the main article.
