Pumping station systems 1

1. Introduction

Grundfos pumping stations are prefabricated pumping stations designed for collecting and pumping of drainage water, rainwater or wastewater. The pump pit is made of polyethylene (PE-HD) or polypropylene (PP), and it comes with outlet pipe and valves fitted. The pump(s) may be supplied separately. The pipes are made of polyethylene (PE) or stainless steel (AISI 304 or AISI 316).Depending on the pit size and application, the covers come in PE or aluminium. The pump type depends on the pumped liquid. The drainage water, rainwater or wastewater is led into the pit. When the liquid in the pit reaches the start level, the pump(s) will start and pump the liquid further in the system to a sewage treatment plant or sewer.

Features and benefits

The complete systemNow, all the components of your pumping stations can be Grundfos quality. To complement our range of high-quality pumps and pumping equipment, we have our flexible welded pumping station solutions featuring all the qualities you need:.• sturdy materials• well-designed polyethylene or polypropylene pits• all necessary accessories such as pipes, valves and

inlet screen, as well as reliable controllers. You get a complete pumping station ready to be installed. Getting everything from one supplier, you can be certain that all components meet the most stringent quality requirements and fit perfectly together.Once the pumping station is installed, you will find that maintenance is reduced to an absolute minimum. The combination of sturdy materials and convenient access to valves and pumps not only makes service and maintenance easier, it also makes them much less frequent.

Advantages• Corrosion-free materials

Grundfos pumping station are made from corrosion-free materials throughout. This uncompromising choice of materials and the unique design make the pumping stations remarkably service-friendly and reliable.

• Modular flexibilityThe welded pumping station consist of four main elements(1: – One or two of our highly efficient and reliable

pumps(2

– a pit in the size to suit your requirements– all pipes and valves– controllers to ensure operational efficiency and

safety.(1 Separate valve chamber available on request.(2 Three and four pumps available as FPV option.

• Many sizes availableThe pits are available in various sizes, comprising five diameters and complete flexibility regarding depths.

• Installation and service friendlyThe pit has an extended bottom plate to secure the pit from uplift when installed in areas with high groundwater level. For large pits the design includes inclined bottom plates to improve the self-cleaning effect and thereby limit sludge and odour problems. You can reach all components needed in the pumping station from the top. In pit sizes smaller than D1250, the auto coupling is secured in the bottom position without any use of screws. It is possible to remove the coupling together with the pipes without entering the pit.

Component overviewThe components of the pumping station are selected according to Grundfos’s principles of high reliability, long life and great consideration for the environment during production, operation and disposal.

4. Operation

Operating conditions

Pumped liquids

• Drainage water• rainwater (surface water)• wastewater.

Liquid temperature

The liquid temperature that can be handled depends on the pump selected. See the installation and operating instructions for the pump. In general, the maximum liquid temperature is 40 °C. If your liquid has a higher temperature, contact your local Grundfos company. For certain pump types, 60 °C are permissible for short periods. However, at 60 °C the pit material begins to soften.

Acids and alkalis

The pump pit is resistant to strong acids and alkalis as well as solvents. The pump are supplied with the pump pit and are normally resistance to pH values between 4 and 10. In case of doubt, contact your local Grundfos company.

Viscosity

Very thick wastewater must not be led into the pit. See also the installation and operating instructions for the pump.

Density

Maximum 1100 kg/m3.

Installation and operationLocal regulations and legal requirements must always be met. For further information, see the installation and operating instructions for the pumping station.

Installation of pumpSome versions come without the pump installed. For installation and startup of the pump, see the installation and operating instructions for the pump.Note: The pump must be lowered carefully into the pit in order to avoid damage to the pump and pit.

Pipes with flange connectionsIf the pit is to be installed at temperatures below 0 °C, loosen all flange bolts and retighten them when the pumping station has been installed. In this way, you prevent stress in the pipes.

Fitting the chainIn the case of pumps on auto coupling, we recommend that you fit the chain in the foremost lifting eye of the lifting bracket. When lifting the pump make sure to use a lifting device that is approved for the weight of the pump. Make sure to keep body parts away from a lifted pump.

7. Technical data

Description of the terms used in the following sections:• Total volume

The volume of the complete pit.• Emergency volume

The volume from the bottom of the pit to the lowest inlet.

• Sump volumeThe volume from the bottom of the pit to the start level.

• Effective volumeThe volume pumped in every pump cycle, that is the volume between the start and stop level.

Starting frequencyIn a pumping station, the water volume comprises the volume below the lowest pump stop level and the pumpable volume above this level, fluctuating with pump usage and incoming flow rate. The starting frequency of the pumps depends on the available pumpable volume and the incoming flow rate. The starting frequency Z is a function of the ratio between Qin/Q and Vh.

Note: If the maximum incoming flow rate is equal to the pump performance, the pump will be running permanently. When the actual pump capacity for single-pump operation is equal to the maximum peak inflow, Zmax will always appear when the inflow is half the pump capacity.

Zmax: maximum number of starts per hour.

Vh: necessary, minimum accumulated volume between start and stop..

Sump volumeIn installations where the expected maximum incoming flow Qin is less than 60 % of the selected pump performance, the accumulated sump volume must be calculated in such a way that there will be least two pump starts a day in order to prevent sedimentation in the sump. The following drawings show values of empty pits without pump, pipe, etc.

Fig. 31 Sump volume in relation to level, D400

Fig. 32 Sump volume in relation to level, D600

Qin = incoming flow rate [l/s]Q = pump performance [l/s]Vh = accumulated (effective) volume between start

and stop [m3]

Zmax = Q × 3.64 × Vh

Vh = Q × 3.64 × Zmax
