YEAR 6 INNOVATIVE FUNDRAISER @ PUTNEY PS

The school captains and prefects would like to announce - for the first time – an innovative fundraising project.

The student leaders have teamed up with COUNTRY MEATS DIRECT to offer the school community the highest quality free range eggs, milk and bread, delivered straight to the school.

This is how it will work:

Country Meats Direct will have a link on their website for the Putney PS community,

Parents and members of the community will be able to go online and order their eggs, milk or bread from a list of designated products.

Once a fortnight or month, (depending on the demand) Country Meats Direct will deliver the order to the school, straight from the farm/bakery.

Between a given time, the school leaders will assist you in picking up your orders.

A percentage of all sales will be provided back to the Year 6 Fundraising.

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED FOR ETHICS @ PUTNEY PS

Primary Ethics is the charity authorised by the NSW state government to deliver Year 1 to Year 6 ethics classes using an approved curriculum.

We are looking for new volunteers to step forward for training. You don’t need to have teaching experience to volunteer, but you must be interested in helping children to think about ethical issues, using our script-like program. Many Primary Ethics volunteers find teaching ethics to be the highlight of their week. Classes are approximately half an hour each week. Volunteers must be available on Wednesday afternoons from either 2:10-2:40pm or 2:45-3:15pm each week during school term time.

If you are interested in becoming the volunteering please contact Dan Hinton (Ethics Coordinator) for more information: [email protected]

DANCE GROUP –WAKAKIRRI @ PUTNEY PS

YEAR 4 ‘BIG HISTORY’ CAKE STALL @ PUTNEY PS

On Monday, 4th September, Year 4 will be holding a cake stall. We will be selling a range of delicious sweets and treats at recess and lunch, and each treat will cost $1. We will be using the proceeds from our cake stall to purchase a Wollemi Pine for our school. In Big History we have been learning about sustainability, and the Wollemi Pine will be a reminder for all of us to protect and preserve our natural environment now and in the future. (Year 4 Teachers)

BOOK WEEK CELEBRATIONS @ PUTNEY PS

Book Week celebrations have kicked off at Putney Public school. Year 2 attended Stories at Bedtime on Tuesday. Year 1 will have their turn on Wednesday and Kindergarten on Friday. The children who have attended already have had a fantastic time with some wonderful stories, craft activities and a delicious morning tea.

The Pyjama Gang show is our Book Week event for Years 3-6. I am looking forward to seeing what amazing talents our students are going to share with us.

Thank you to Mrs McKenzie for organising Book Week. We greatly appreciate your efforts.

DRAMA ENSEMBLE

In Week 2, the Drama Ensemble group was selected to perform at the annual Arts Alive Festival of Drama which was held at NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Arts). Our play, “The Crane and the Duck” was very well received and we were awarded a plaque for excellence of achievement. Mr Kolleti presented this plaque to the children at assembly and it is on display in the school hall. Congratulations to the actors on their success! I would like to thank Mr Kolleti, Mrs Varol and the Drama Ensemble parents for their support of the group.

This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student well-being and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s expe-rience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, ipads, tablets, laptops or computers.

The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The

parent survey will be conducted between 24 August and 13 October. Although participating in

the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au.

P & C News P&C Minutes 21st August 2017

No quorum was achieved but a general discussion was held instead.

The local council have been contacted for replacement flags for the school.

School uniform, namely sports jackets, were discussed as well as the general school uniform standard.

The current band services may be under review. The students require value for money and opportunities to excel which does not seem present under the current provider.

Mr Koletti advised the school validation was completed last week. A review of the process will be conducted on 31/8/17. Results will be presented at next P&C meeting and via school website link.

NAPLAN results are in and will be distributed this week. Overall, pleasing results. Significant growth from yr3 to yr5.

Audio books for the school discussed as well as increased use of calendar on school website and long term plan of school spends to renew existing equipment, ie white boards.

Next P&C meeting date to be advised.

Speech Pathology News

Expressive Language

Expressive Language is a term used by Speech Pathologists to

refer to a child’s ability to use words and sentences to express

themselves. There are many components to expressive

language development. Some children can experience

difficulties developing their expressive language skills. A speech

pathologist can complete a language assessment in order to

determine whether or not a child has an expressive language

delay. Expressive language delays can occur with or without

receptive language delays (difficulties in understanding).

Children with delays in their expressive language can experience

difficulties:

Developing a rich vocabulary to communicate their ideas

Using word level grammatical structures, such as

pronouns (he, him, his etc), plurals (cat/cats, foot/feet)

and verb tenses (kick/kicked, eat/ate)

Asking questions (who, what, why, where, how, when?)

Using more complex sentence structures that include

different clauses (The girl who owns the puppy knocked

on the door) and conjunctions (I can’t go swimming

because I am sick).

Finding the right words to use while speaking

Retelling stories or giving information in an organised and

sequential manner

Using specific language and tend to use filler words, such

as ‘thing’ and ‘this’ often

Participating in classroom activities

Engaging in language-based play

Completing written work at school

Children with difficulties in expressive language development

aren’t always easy to identify. Some use fewer words than

others their age or make grammatical errors when talking.

Others can be quite chatty but tend to talk in circles or not get

to the point. Some children can become frustrated as they

experience difficulties getting their message across, while

others might seem to be reserved, lazy or daydreamers.

Speech therapy can help children develop their expressive

language skills so that they can better convey their thoughts,

ideas and feelings which can in turn help with behaviour,self-

esteem and school work.

If you have any concerns regarding your child’s expressive

language and would like to have a chat about how to help them,

please email Melissa at [email protected] or call 0414

255 283.
