Cell Phone Use Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to protect your safety by banning you from using cell phones and other wireless devices when driving or working that may cause distractions that prevent you from concentrating 100% on the safe operation of the vehicle, or job function and may lead to accidents. No Cell phone will be allowed on Hi-Way 9 docks or Maintenance shops. Hand held Cell phones must not be used while driving Hi-Way 9 Trucks. Our goal is to get you home safe each and every day: these steps are necessary for your safety.

The banks are open April 25, and therefore Team 9’s payday will land on the same day

accordingly. Steve Opoku-Edmonton

March was a month that proved to be quite exciting for the Hi-Way 9 Team as it was once again time for the quarterly draws. What was the reward? $500 is gas certificates was drawn for each zone. Some zones chose to divide up the re-ward and “share the wealth”, while some chose to leave the prize large and make the winning that much more spectacular. TAXES?!? If you would like to make changes or have more taxes taken from your pay check, contact your

terminal manager or office for the form.

Why Take RRSP’s Directly Off Your Pay Check?

Taking funds directly from your pay check towards an RRSP al-lows you not to pay taxes on that amount. Also, it is a lot easier to put money aside when you don’t even see it. And the very cool thing about this savings plan? Hi-Way 9 can do this for you!

Just ask Donnerene how (1-800-622-5800)!

We all have ability. The difference is how we use it. Stevie Wonder

Congratulations to these Team 9 members for your

notable milestone! Your care and commitment

are commendable.

The Dinosaur Capital of the World, Drumheller, AlbertaG.. A small yet busy town located in the bed of the Badlands 84 miles South East of Calgary. A community in bloom with not only a colorful and rich past but a very vibrant and promising future, Drumheller will soon add it’s much anticipated Community Facility/Multi Functional Recreational building and the even more talked about -their first Tim Horton’s! Although the crocuses are not out yet, our cars are still covered in salt, the Dragons fell short in playoffs, and the snow fall keeps shading the sun, the near future for this tight knit community is looking brighter and brighter every day. Recently, here in Drum we have implemented a Drumheller team leaders group that is composed of employees from every aspect of a terminals operation. From Dispatch, to Billing, to administra-tion we have put together a team whose purpose is to monitor and control every aspect of our ter-minals pro’s as well as cons. Topics such as Idle Times, safety procedures, claims, overtime, any company changes, and generally any matter that impacts our daily routine are discussed on a weekly basis to determine where change must be made and where positive impacts have occurred.

This has proved to be a very beneficial tool and a vital asset to our team’s improvement in many regards over the past few months. With the changing of seasons hopefully occurring in the near future and the growth our town will soon experience, we at the Drumheller Depot are looking forward to the challenge of better serving our community and continually growing and stretching out to reach new and exciting business ventures and opportunities. It is always a welcomed thought to know that the sun is literally beginning to shine and each day becomes a little warmer. Like the sun our team too becomes more prominent and bright within our community, and only gets stronger with each day that passes. Adversity and change is a healthy and necessary part of life so we at the Drumheller terminal would like to challenge all the other depots to take control of this, to face and overcome any obstacle that might be ahead.

SHELDON EWASKOW Central Alberta Highway Dispatcher Sheldon Ewaskow is a Team 9 member with a fun loving attitude, strong work ethic, and loves to be a problem solver for Hi-Way 9. Sheldon started his journey with Hi-Way 9 March 2010. After spending many years working at Pepsi and even more working in the oil and gas industry, Sheldon wanted to be part of a company he could grow with-a place where coming to work was more then just another job, more then a place to grab a pay check. Sheldon wanted to be part of a team that had family values, a place that would allow him to use his skills and grow as the company grew. Sheldon feels he has found just the perfect place for that: Hi-Way 9. Sheldon started his career as a line run driver covering the Innisfail run. He showed his skill and aptitude during his first three months in that area and shortly after he became an extended Hi-Way driver. Again Sheldon showed a high level of skill and no matter what the run was he showed his amazing abil-ity to excel by meeting or exceeding the previous times and making himself know to the other depots. After the birth of his baby Mia, Sheldon once again

returned to being a line run driver but not for very long. Again after only a few short months the skills and prow-ess this young man has shown took him into another avenue of Hi-Way 9. In his employment time of just 1 year, Sheldon has done line runs, has driven the highways as an LCV driver, and now is making his mark as the Line/Highway dispatcher for central Alberta. Always looking ahead and never one to be content with mediocrity I am sure we will see great things from Sheldon as he continues to make his mark with a company he loves to work for.

Stan Balik –Edmonton-I was having a rough night with getting trailers pulled off doors and put on. Stan used his tractor to help me out while he was waiting on his trailers and was a huge help! Way to go! Thank-you.

Dylan ShewcHuk –Edmonton-Thank you for your hard work. Yesterday you hand bombed over 100 tires by yourself without any complaint. That helps us all out. Keep up the great work!

Stu Veno –Drumheller-Today was your day off and you had come in to wash your truck. You happened to come on the dock when Rhea and Raelene needed some assis-tance getting a couple customers’ freight loaded and promptly came to help out. We just wanted to say thank-you and even though it was your day off. We greatly ap-preciate your help and your efforts you put in each day.

Jeff McNeil –Red Deer-You took on another line and did-n’t let it effect your stripping or your attitude or your work ethic. You are a strong member of this team and have definitely proved you are more than capable of han-dling the pressure of GO TIME. Keep up the great work.

Lorena Uzelman –Red Deer-I wanted to commend you on your perseverance and hard work in finding missing freight. Again today you just kept at it and made a num-ber of calls to try to locate some missing freight for a customer. With hard work and diligence you were able to find the missing freight and close the file. GREAT JOB! Wade Welch –Drayton Valley-Took it upon himself to ask customers about their empty pallets, and managed to pick up 50 in 1 spot! Great job Wade!!

A Round of Applause

for the Streamline Calgary Team! ( a note received)

Let me first start by saying Thank You! Its hard to be-

lieve that it has been a month since our transition in Feb-

ruary, my how the time does fly.

We haven't heard much from our sales team here,

which means things must be going smoothly and that

their customers are happy with their deliveries.

Reporting is going well. We're receiving the Daily

Exception report in good time, usually with nothing to report which is great. The

appointment tracking and communication is working well on our end, and I feel

we've got a good system the way things are going. Any feedback from your side is

certainly appreciated.

In reviewing our Reverse Logistics performance, it appears that we do not have a

large volume of returns nor a significant volume of damages. This is reassuring to

know that our freight is being handle with care and the satisfaction of our customers

as well as Dare is in consideration once the freight leaves our dock.

As I've told Shayne before, Streamline drivers are professional, courteous and

friendly when onsite. They always meet our safety requirements (chocking tires,

double checking before attaching to or removing a trailer, signing in and out, etc)

which is imperative for us. We do really appreciate that they comply without com-

plaint and without constant reminder, and have raised safety issues where other

carriers are not complying. Please forward our high regards to your team for their

hard work, professionalism, and dedication to safety in and around our facility.

Overall things have been going well and we are pleased thus far with the perform-

ance of Streamline. Thank you all for your high level of customer service, and for

your dedication to serving our customers with the high level of service they have

come to expect from Dare. It hasn't gone unno-

ticed and it is appreciated. We look forward to

this continued performance and dedication while

working with Streamline into the future.

Some companies don’t care what their employees wear to work-as long as they just show up. Hi-Way 9 is cer-tainly not one of those! Wearing clean, recogniz-able uniforms, proper office attire and safety gear is re-quired for Team 9! But the best news is- the Team does this with a smile and a whole lot of pride! Thanks to these, and the many Team 9 members that wash their units weekly and arrive at work in clean uni-forms each and every day. Congratulations Yvonne Capson of Calgary! We ap-preciate your uniform pride-including the safety vest you wear when working on the dock! You are this month’s winner of Pride Recognition and will be receiving a new jacket compliments of Hi-Way 9 .

What is the Team 9 Challenge? Heather Colberg, director of Hi-Way 9, has challenged every Team 9 member to do one hour or one good thing a month or volunteer to one event for 12 hours to cover your year and send an email to Sylvia at [email protected] (or a note in the mail to the Drumheller office) and let her know what you did to do your part. She is having a column each month and your cause will be high-lighted.-if you believe enough to spend your time & efforts, create some awareness!

With approximately 450 team members in all the divisions under the Hi-Way 9 Group of Companies, if everyone gives one hour per month divided by 24 hours, it would be 225 DAYS PER YEAR THE HI-WAY 9 TEAM WOULD BE VOLUNTEERING. WOULD THAT NOT BE WONDERFUL?!?

Everyone please give me your attention: we are currently hurting people and destroying property (Collisions and Claims) at an unprecedented rate. My intent is to get every-one paying attention to what they are doing. Below are exam-ples of some of the careless acts that could have cost some-one their life, not to mention that the property damage has also been out of this world. -Sprinter Driver in Red Deer does not Yield as required –Result Hospitalization -Sprinter driver in Calgary carless left turn-Driver still in Hospital, good luck resolving this with $100,000.00 G

-Drumheller, person falls off a ladder because ladder folds out from under him, just about a week in hospi-talGand at least a month off -Streamline Driver hits car on side of Highway -Backing into a truck, be-cause driver thought he should have moved, back-ing into doors, hitting parked

carsGwe have a 98% rate of being at fault in a collision , I will reword that: The non professional drivers out there (public) have been better, safer, more skilled than our

“professional” drivers. We have been getting WCB claims daily, collisions small and large, daily! Is everyone using the Hiring guide???GIf so why am I see-ing abstracts of people who don’t qualify? Why are we chasing new hire requirements? We, the leaders, need to create a environment where peo-ple can chose to succeed. Half of that is making sure we have a safe environment, follow the basics, follow the rules. From pre trip to post trip, fork-lift inspections, does everyone have PPE? No Smoking or Cell phone use where its not allowed (did you know the province of BC made one mil-lion dollars a day when they kicked off their cell phone law enforcement?) Most of all: stay close to your people -don’t allow or tolerate an unsafe act.

Team 9-Full of Winners! Gale Pickwell of Westlock won the Pride ac-knowledgement for February. He is now sporting a new jacket, and we are told he’s mighty pleased with this addition to his attire. Congratulations, Gale!

APRIL FOOLS,

JOHN!

As the new Terminal

Manager in Red Deer,

John Gallant was

spared no mercy on

April 1st as his first

duty of the day was

to...find his office!

The question is-did he

recycle those sticky

pads??

We are thinking this

is your Team’s way of

initiation,

John. It

could have

been worse–

the roof was-

n’t covered.

Debra Alderman of Drumheller’s admini-stration Team was a bit hesitant to talk about her volunteering, stating she does-n’t do it for the recognition, but that she just looks to “give back using my strengths”. But give her a couple of min-utes to talk about her passions, and Debra was full of conversation, examples, and

ideas on how people can help out a cause-even just for a small bit. Something Debra has done for over 6 years now is write letters to Canada’s active troops at war. She started when our forces first

went to Bosnia, and continues to do so. Not knowing who will receive the letters (the Captains distribute the letters to those that don’t normally receive mail from home), Debra tries to share a bit of love and appre-ciation to a well-deserving soldier who is far from home. Do a quick google on “write the troops”, and you can quickly see how appre-

ciated, and easy, this little act of compassion can be. Debra is also a busy lady with the Drumheller and District Literacy Project. As a volunteer, she helps those that have English as a Second Language (currently Deb works with a gentleman from Paki-stan), and adults that are either illiterate or needing help with their reading (she tutored a 70 year old grandpa who did-n’t know how to read and wanted to share the experience with his grand daughter). Spending 4 hours a week provides Debra with a greater purpose, and a very satisfying time resulting in changes that affect the rest of people’s lives. There are over 70 literacy programs in Alberta alone-manned by volunteers and sponsored by the Government. If you have as little as two hours a week to give, can read, and would like to alter some-one’s life for the better, this just might be the way for you to step up to the plate and help make a difference. Go to your local town’s website, or even google “Literacy Alberta” and you will discover just how needed your time and services are. Thanks for sharing Debra, and for being an example to follow.

It used to drive me crazy hearing ”If you’re not going to do it right, don’t do it at all”. My mom was always toting some glib words of wisdom (or so I thought), so I

would roll my eyes, and redo the work that I had just done, but to a better standard. And yet now, the work ethic my parents somehow instilled in me has apparently produced an attitude of just that-”do it to the best of your abil-ity”. The question is-how does the rest of Team 9 think? I personally take a look at all of the positive quality achievements that are written for Team 9 members. I also see the emails, notes of thanks, and receive phone calls of appreciation from a customer, supplier or commu-nity member relaying gratitude for a

job, attitude, or involvement well done. There are many, and I repeat, MANY examples of our Team “Going the extra Mile”, and showing our customers just how much we care. For those of you who might be dis-couraged over the accidents or misdi-rects in our system, don’t despair-keep doing what you are doing, to the best of your ability. Be the example to fol-low. Let you strong work ethic rub off on those around you. Share advice as to how to do it better. A futile task, you might ponder? Ab-solutely not! If I had been left to do the dishes while leaving food crunchies on the edges, or cleaned my room with items bunched under the bed, I would-n’t be where I am at today. But to much perseverance (and I’m sure questioning at times whether the mes-sage was getting across), the standard had been set, and I now live every day,

“trying to do it right”. One quick question-will you AL-WAYS get it right? Unfortunately not-but when you do make a blunder, learn from it, pick yourself up, and move for-ward. I have made more than my fair share of mistakes at work with Hi-Way 9, and yet here I am, apologies been made, mistakes learned from, and moving forward. Those of us that are working hard to see Team 9 suc-ceed-we far out-number those that have the “just get by” attitude. Let’s help out first by leading by exam-ple! ...because I care Sylvia Kirk
