Introduction

Facebook is currently the leading social network with plenty of functionalities allowing brands and individuals to present themselves and engage in genuine, valuable discussions.

Status update is a basic functionality of Facebook. If used wisely it can lead to valuable conversations and promotion of one’s brand.

Sharing information on Facebook is based on so called Ripple Effect – every single reaction to your status update will appear on your friend’s wall and become visible to their networks too. This way a single message has a potential reach multiplied by all networks of your friends, their friends etc.

Facebook profiles, fan pages, groups

Updating your personal Facebook, brand fan page or a group status works in the same way. Simply type your message and click “share” button.

Facebook updates and comments are featured based on an algorithm which is the reason why more popular updates and comments might appear on the top of your wall when you log in to your Facebook account.

Basic status update on Facebook is limited to 420 characters. If you want to post a longer text you can use: 1.  Facebook notes which will be posted on your profile, 2.  On an external website (for example a blog) and link to it from your

Facebook status.

Status update with links

To update your status with a url, use the “link” option. Once you paste in the url, Facebook will automatically include part of the original content – text and images.

Status update with links

The automated description of your link is not always pretty! You can edit the text before you post the entire status.

You can also choose the thumbnail before you post the status. Try it with links to videos too!

You can also add you own description of the link. It’s polite to do so – try to explain to your friends why this particular link is important to you, use it to call to action!

Status update with friends included

You can post updates including your friends – this way the message will appear on their wall. Your friends will be also notified that you have included them in your post. To do so you need to tag them, meaning ad “@” sign and just after it start typing your friend’s name.

Facebook will automatically start suggesting you friends, so just click on the right one on the suggested list to add her/him to your update.

Status update with fan pages included

Including names of your favourite fan pages is very easy. You can tag fan pages in the very same way you tag your friends, but remember – you have to be a fan of that fan page first to be able to tag it!
