2 General Information

System OverviewFour models of the radio are available:

• Model VR 100 – AM/FM/MechanicalCassette

• Model VR 200 – AM/FM/Logiccassette with external CD changercapability

• Model VR 300 – 1–Din AM/FM/CDplayer with external CD changercapability

• Model VR 400– 2–Din AM/FM/LogicCassette/CD player with external CDchanger capability

In addition to the front panel controls forthese radios, most models can also becontrolled using an optional remote wirelesscontrol or optional steering wheel-mountedcontrols

Using the RadioNote: Before using the manual, check to seewhat radio model is in your vehicle. Somesystem features described may not apply toyour radio.

Security CodeThe radio is protected by a security code.

• Vehicles built after April 4, 2003: Thesecurity code is found in two locationslisted below:(1) An adhesive label is underneath theashtray, on top of the ashtray bracket.The security code cannot be changed.

See illustration for location of code.To access, remove the top fuse traycover and the front relay cover, then theashtray can be removed.(2) There is a copy in the spare fuse bag,which is inside the owner’s informationpackage provided from the factory.Retain this code for future reference.

• Vehicles built after March 3, 2003:The security code is located on anadhesive label underneath the ashtray,on top of the ashtray bracket.

• Vehicles built before March 3, 2003:The security code is located in the sparefuse bag, which is inside the owner’sinformation package provided from thefactory.

Note: Certain vehicles have optionalelectronic devices that will automaticallyenter the security code if power is interrupted.

When the radio power is first turned on afterpower has been interrupted, “ID CHECK”is displayed for 3 seconds, followed by“LOCK”, then 0000 is displayed.

To unlock the radio, enter the four-digitsecurity code found on the removable label,follow these instructions:

Turn SELECT to scroll tofirst number.

Press SELECT to select number.

Turn SELECT to scroll tosecondnumber.

Press SELECT to select number.

Turn SELECT to scroll tothird number.

Press SELECT to select number.

Turn SELECT to scroll tofourth number.

Press SELECT to select number.

If the code is entered correctly, the radio willswitch to the last active mode (i.e. FM, CD,etc.) and is ready to use.

If the code is entered incorrectly, you can try2 more times. After 3 incorrect entries, theradio will display “LOCK”.

Note: The radio can NOT be manuallyturned off, it remains ON with a lock codemessage.

Note: To unlock code: Leave the battery andignition ON and uninterrupted for one hour.

Note: If your security code is lost, contactyour local Volvo dealer.

Power ON/OFF

Press the VOLUME knob to turn ON/OFF.

LanguageTo select the desired Radio Data System(RDS) Program Type Function (PTY)display language, turn the radio OFF.

1 Press and hold TP for 2 seconds.2 Turn SELECT to scroll through

available languages.

(English, Español, Français in US-selectedfrequency bands).

After the desired language is displayed for 5seconds, the setting is saved and the displayreturns to the default.

Country Frequency SelectionDifferent countries broadcast on differentsets of radio frequencies. Selections can bemade from different country-specific radiofrequency bands.

To select a country frequency band, with theradio ON;

Press and hold DISP for 3 seconds until thecurrent country frequency band is displayed.

Press MODE to scroll through availablebands.

AMERICAS > EUROPE > AUSTRALI >JAPAN > ARGENTIN > SAUDI

The selected band will be saved after 5seconds.

Note: When a new country is selected, allpreset stations from the previous country areerased.

Display IlluminationAll of the radio controls are illuminated fornighttime viewing. Dimming the vehicleinterior lights will dim the radio controlsalso.

ClockDisplaying the TimeWhen the ignition is on, the time of day isdisplayed, even when the radio is off. Whenthe ignition is off, you can display the timefor 5 seconds.

Press DISP to display the time.

While the radio is on and in any mode, pressand release the DISP button to change thedisplay from the current display to the timeof day.

Note: If the radio is currently tuned to anRDS broadcast, the DISP button may needto be pressed several times to see the timeof day.

Setting the Clock12–or 24–Hour Format

You can select either a 12-hour or 24-hourstyle time display. To change the timeformat,

The number shown after 12/24 indicateswhich format is selected (12-hour or24-hour). To change this number, press theSELECT knob. After 5 seconds, the settingis saved and the display returns to default.

Note: When Non-European frequency isselected, the 12-hour format is selectedautomatically, however, it can be changed byfollowing the previous steps.

Setting Time of DayTo change the time of day;

Press and hold the SELECT button for 3seconds.

Turn the SELECT button to showTIMESET,

Press the SELECT button.

Turn the SELECT button to the correct hour.

Press SELECT until minutes flash.

Turn the SELECT button to correct minutes.

After 5 seconds, the setting is saved and thedisplay returns to the default.

Alarm Clock and TimerVR 200, VR 300 and VR 400

Setting the Alarm ClockTo set the alarm clock;

Press and hold SELECT for 3 seconds.

Turn the SELECT button to show ASET.

Turn the SELECT button to the correct hour.

If the radio is set to the 12–hour format,“AM” or “PM” is also displayed.

After AM or PM is chosen then ALARMNor Y is displayed.

PressY to set alarm, orN if you do not wantto set alarm.

Alarm Clock ON/OFF/SnoozeTo turn the alarm ON or OFF, press andhold the SELECT knob for 3 seconds until12/24 is displayed, then turn the SELECTknob until “ALARM” is displayed. Pressthe SELECT knob to choose between “Y”(ON) or “N” (OFF). After 5 seconds, thesetting is saved and the display returns tothe default. When the alarm is set, the alarmicon ALARM is displayed.

If the radio is on when the alarm time isreached, a beeping alarm sounds and thealarm time is shown. If the radio is OFFwhen the alarm time is reached, the last radiomode turns ON.

In either case, if you press any of the radiobuttons while the alarm is going OFF, thealarm “snoozes” for 9 minutes.

After 9 minutes, the alarm turns ON againand remains ON until snooze is activated orthe alarm is turned off, as described above.

Note: If the alarm is not turned OFF or thesnooze mode is not activated, the alarm willstop after 18 minutes to avoid dischargingthe battery.

Alarm VolumeThe alarm volume is adjusted by pressingand holding the SELECT knob for 3 secondsuntil 12/24 is displayed.

Turn the SELECT knob until “AL VOL” isdisplayed and turn the VOLUME knob toincrease or decrease the volume of the alarm.

After 5 seconds, the setting is saved and thedisplay returns to the default.

One Hour TimerThe radio can be set to play for one hour,after which it will automatically turn off.To turn the radio ON for another hour, withthe ignition OFF, press the VOLUME knob.After 1 hour of play, the radio will turn OFF.To turn the radio ON for another hour, pressthe VOLUME knob again.

Audio ControlsThe bass and treble audio settings apply to allradio modes (AM/FM, or WX, cassette andCD). A separate set of the following audioadjustments can be stored for each mode.

Note: WX (weather) is available only onU.S. models.

Volume ControlWhile listening in any mode, turn theVOLUME knob to adjust volume.

If you are currently adjusting the soundquality of the radio, (e.g., BASS, TREB,BAL, FADE);

1 Press the AUD button until “VOL” isdisplayed, then

2 Turn the VOLUME knob to adjustvolume.

Dynamic Distortion Limiting

Dynamic Distortion Limiting automaticallylimits the audio distortion level caused byplaying the radio too loud. This feature doesnot need to be set or adjusted.

Balance ControlTo adjust the left/right balance;

Midrange Control(Model VR 400 only)

To adjust midrange control;

1 Press AUD repeatedly to display MID.2 Turn VOLUME to adjust MIDRANGE.

After 5 seconds, the display returns to thedefault.

Loudness (VR 100 Only)The Loudness feature boosts the low (bass)frequency response at low volume levels,improving the sound quality. The amountof boost automatically increases as volumeis increased.

Press the LOUD button to turn ON.(The “LOUD” icon is displayed). Pressagain to turn OFF.

All other models have an Auto-Loudnessfunction. This feature cannot be turned ONor OFF.

2 or 4 Speaker Select

Depending on the radio speaker installationin your vehicle, 2 or 4 speaker output can beselected. To change this selection;

Press the SELECT knob for 3 seconds todisplay 12/24.

Turn the SELECT knob to display SPKR.

Press SELECT to choose 2 or 4.

When the 2 speaker option is chosen, therear speakers are disabled and the fade adjustsetting does not function.

After 5 seconds, the setting is saved and thedisplay returns to the default.

20 Audio Controls

Room Simulation (Model VR 400 Only)One of fiveacoustic settings can be chosen,simulating different listening environmentsand providing a variety of sound qualities:

TALK:This mode limits the frequency responseand delays audio from the rear speakerscompared to the front speakers. This effectis very useful on AM talk radio because itfilters much of the noise and moves the audioimage forward.

LIVE:Simulates the acoustics of live musicalperformance in a larger room.

AUDITORIUM:The same effect as LIVE, but morepronounced, giving the feeling of an evenlarger room.

ARENA:Creates the effect of being in a large arena.

DRIVER L or DRIVER R:The sound from the driver side front speakeris delayed with respect to the passenger sidefront speaker, creating the effect of shiftingor moving the audio image (for left hand andright hand drive vehicles).

To select a Room Simulation;

1 Press AUD until RSIM is displayed.2 Turn VOLUME to select sound effect.

Turn the SELECT knob to select soundeffect.

To change the degree of effect, from 0(minimum) to 15 (maximum), for theselected simulation,

1 Press AUD to scroll RSIM # to changethe degree of effect.

2 Turn the VOLUME knob to increase ordecrease effect.OR

3 Turn the SELECT knob to increase ordecrease effect.

After 5 seconds, the setting is saved and thedisplay returns to default as indicated on thedisplay.

Speed-Dependent Volume(Model VR 400 withSteering Wheel Controls Only)The Model VR 400 can automatically adjustthe volume based on your vehicles speed,turning the volume up as you travel faster anddown as you travel slower. This adjustmenthelps the radio to be heard over vehicleand road noise. To turn Speed-DependentVolume ON:

Press and hold SELECT to display 12/24

Turn SELECT to display SCV.

change to “N” (off), “l” (low setting, “2”(medium setting) or “3” (high setting).

Note: The volume change is heard onlywhile the vehicle is moving, but may not benoticeable due to the changes in road noise.

24 Tuning the Radio

Band SelectDifferent bands of entertainment andinformation services are available from thefollowing models: AM, FM or WX.

To select a band: (AM, FM or WX);

Press MODE to display desired band.

Weather BandThe National Oceanic and AtmosphericAdministration (NOAA) of the U.S.Department of Commerce providescontinuous broadcasts of taped weathermessages.

These messages are repeated every 4 to 6minutes and routinely updated every 1 to 3hours.

Updates are more frequent during severeweather. Most NOAA weather stationsbroadcast 24 hours a day.

NOAA broadcasts on 7 channels. In someareas, more than one broadcast may beavailable. Select the broadcast locationclosest to your location for the best reception.

Note: The Weather Band option is onlyavailable when the country chosen isAmericas. See the Country FrequencySelection section.

If you reach the end of a frequency band, theradio will roll over or wrap to the oppositeend of the band and continue through theband.

If the select knob is not rotated within5 seconds, the manual tune function iscanceled and the SELECT returns to itsdefault function.

SeekThe radio can automatically seek stations,finding and stopping on the next station thatexceeds the sensitivity level set. To seek fora station in any tuner mode(AM, FM or WX) the next higher or lowerstation on the current band;

Briefly press the UP/DOWN arrows toSEEK.

The radio mutes as it searches for the nextstation with a strong signal. When it finds astation, the radio stops seeking and the audioreturns to the original volume.

Press the UP/DOWN arrows again for nextstation.

Turn SELECT to display SEEK.

Press SELECT to scroll between–2 (min) and+2 (max).

After selecting SEEK, the VOLUME knobcan be rotated to scroll between the settings.

After 5 seconds, the setting is saved and thedisplay returns to the default.

The -2 setting will stop only on very strongsignals. The+2 setting will stop on weakersignals.

ScanDuring a Scan, the radio searches for thenext station, pauses on it for a few seconds,and then searches again for the next station.

To scan while in any tuner mode (AM,FM or WX) press and hold the UP/DOWNrocker button to search for the next higher orlower station on the current band. The radiodisplays

SCAN and the audio mutes. The radiosearches for and stops on the next stationwith a strong signal and the audio returns tothe original volume. After 5 seconds, theaudio mutes again and the radio continues thescan. To stop the scan, press the UP/DOWNrocker button.

If no station is found in 2 passes throughthe band, the scan will stop at the startingfrequency.

RDS (Radio Data System Features)RDS transmits additional informationencoded on an FM stations regular signal.The RDS feature works only with FMbroadcast stations transmitting this encodedinformation. RDS broadcast is widelyavailable in Europe, but less common inNorth America.

RDS features include:

• Traffic Program announcements

Alternate Frequency Switching (AF)With the AF feature, the radio automaticallyswitches to another station or frequency, ifavailable, that is broadcasting the identicalprogram materials as the original station,when the original station begins to fade.

With AF turned on, you can drive across acountry or continent while listening to thesame program, without retuning your radio.

To turn the AF feature ON, while in the FMmode;

1 Press and hold TUNE for 3 seconds todisplayAF-ON or AF-OFF.OR

2 Press the UP/DOWN rocker button.

Note: AF networks are common in Europe,but rare in the US.

Traffic Program (TP)When the Traffic Program feature is turnedon and a traffic announcement is received,the radio will automatically interrupt thecurrent mode to broadcast traffic conditionannouncements that are provided by somestations or networks.

If there are no announcements, NO TRAFFis displayed.

Press TP to turn ON.TP icon is displayed.

If TP is turned ON and the radio is nottuned to a station broadcasting trafficannouncements, it will begin to SEEK astation that broadcasts announcements. Theradio will display “SEARCH”.

During a Traffic Announcement, the radiodisplay is “TRAFFIC”.

There are 3 TP icons that may be displayed:

TP Current station can broadcast trafficannouncements, the function is not enabled.

[ TP ] Flashing Current station canbroadcast traffic announcements, thefunction is enabled.

[ ]—The function is enabled, but there areno stations/networks being received thatbroadcast traffic information. This can alsooccur if the TP function is enabled but theradio travels out of the broadcast area for thestation/network that was broadcasting thetraffic information.

Traffic Announcement VolumeThe volume of all traffic announcementscan be reduced or increased by adjustingthe volume while an announcement is beingheard. When the next announcement isreceived, the volume will automaticallyincrease to this volume. When theannouncement is over, the radio will returnto the previous volume setting of whateverradio mode was playing.

The Traffic Announcement volume settingwill be saved for all future announcementsuntil it is adjusted again.

Messages are available when the RT iconRTis displayed. To view the messages, pressthe DISP button until “TEXT” is displayed.After 3 seconds, the first line of the messageis displayed.

After 2 seconds, the next line of the messageis automatically shown. To scroll throughthe message at a faster pace, press the DISPbutton. Three seconds after the last line oftext is displayed, or when the DISP button ispressed, the default display returns.

Push and release SELECT until STORE anda flashing preset number display.

Note: If no preset is stored, the radio willreturn to the previous mode.

Auto-Store will stop after 18 stations

(12 for Model VR 100)are found and stored.If there are not enough strong stations to fillthe presets, the stations discovered will beduplicated until all memory locations arefilled.

If no stations are found, Auto-Store willautomatically cancel. Press the AUTObutton at any time to cancel the Auto-Storefunction.

Note: When Auto-Store is turned off, thepresets that were saved will be lost and theradio will return to the presets stored beforeAuto-Store was enabled.

Emergency Broadcast(Alert)The feature will interrupt the current modeand switch to an emergency radio broadcast.The radio will display “ALERT”.

Select any MODE to cancel EMERGENCYBROADCAST ALERT.

Emergency Broadcast VolumeYou can adjust the volume of all EmergencyBroadcasts while a broadcast is being heard.When the next Emergency Broadcast isreceived, the volume will automaticallyincrease to this volume. When the broadcastis over, the radio will return to the previousvolume setting of whatever radio modewas playing. The Emergency Broadcastvolume setting will be saved for all futureannouncements until it is adjusted again.

Note: The volume cannot be adjusted lowerthan the minimum preset alert/alarm volume.An alert/alarm can be canceled by selectingany mode (AM, FM, CASS, CD, etc.).

Cassette SelectModel VR 100Insert a cassette into the radio and it willautomatically begin to play. “TAPE_A” or“TAPE_B” is displayed, depending on whichside of the tape is playing.

Model VR 200 and VR 400Ensure a cassette is inserted. Press theMODE button until “CASS” is displayed.“TAPE_A” or “TAPE_B” is displayed,depending on which side of the tape isplaying. If no cassette is loaded whenpressing the MODE button, the radio willdisplay “NO TAPE” and return to FM mode.

Cassette Tighteningand Error Detection(VR 200 and VR 400)Each time a cassette is inserted into theradio, the player automatically checks for aloosely wound tape and tightens it beforeplaying. The player also detects tapes thatare too tightly wound or broken. If a tightlywound or bad tape is detected, BAD TAPE isdisplayed and the tape is ejected.

The Cassette Tightening and Error Detectionfeature may prevent cleaning cassettes fromworking properly. To use cleaning cassettes,you can override the error detection.

If a cleaning tape is rejected;

With the radio OFF and the ignition ON,

Press and hold TUNE for 5 seconds until“BAD TAPE” and “DETECT OFF” display.

Insert the cleaning tape.

Tape Player CareThe tape player must be cleaned after every35 hours of use.

Clean the player with a scrubbing-action,non-abrasive cleaning cassette. Thesecassettes have a bottle of cleaning liquid thatis applied to cleaning pads and scrubs thetape heads.

To properly clean your tape player, followthe instructions with the cleaning cassette.Cleaning cassettes should be replacedregularly.

Note: The cleaning cassette is not includedwith your radio and must be purchasedseparately.

DO NOT touch the cassette head withmagnetic or hard objects. DO NOT lubricatethe player mechanism. Do not use cassettesthat are longer than 90 minutes (C-90).Longer cassettes, like C-120, tend to havethinner tape that may stretch or break andmay damage your player.

CAUTION

Not cleaning the tape player can causereduced sound quality and may ruincassettes or damage the player.

Cassette Tape CareDO NOT use cassettes that are deformed,dirty or contaminated. Cassette tapes thatare not properly stored in their plastic casesaway from contaminants, direct sunlight andextreme heat may not operate properly andmay damage your tape player.

Cassette tapes are subject to wear andthe sound quality may degrade over time.Always verify the cassette tape is in goodcondition before use.

Cassette Clean IndicatorThe tape player will alert you that it shouldbe cleaned by displaying the message TPCLEAN. After the player is cleaned,

Press AUD for 5 seconds to clear display.CLN RST is displayed for 3 seconds. Thedisplay returns to the default.

If you experience poor sound quality fromyour cassette player, try playing a differentcassette tape to see if the tape or tape playeris at fault. If the second cassette tape alsohas poor sound quality, try cleaning the tapeplayer, regardless of when the player waslast cleaned.

Note: DO NOT release the AUD buttonbefore “CLN RST” is displayed to reset theclean condition.

If a CD is ejected but not removedwithin approximately 15 seconds, the CDautomatically reloads but does not begin toplay. The automatic reload feature helpsprotect the CD from possible damage.

Previous Trackto skip backward to the beginning of thecurrent track,

Radio SelectPress the MODE button to change from aplayback mode (cassette, CD, CD changer)to the radio mode.

The radio plays the last selected band andstation. To choose a different band, pressthe MODE button until the desired band isdisplayed.

Radio TunePress and hold the top or bottom of theSEEK button to slowly move through thefrequencies on the current band. Continue tohold the SEEK button to activate a fast tune.Release the button to stop the tune.

Radio SeekPress the top or bottom of the SEEK buttonto seek the next station. The audio mutes asthe radio searches for and stops on the nextstation with a strong signal. After findinga station, the audio returns to the originalvolume.

Note: Seek will cancel if no signal is strongenough for the radio to recognize it.

Radio PresetsTo listen to the preset stations, choose thedesired band by pressing the MODE button.Then repeatedly press the P.SET button untilthe desired preset number is displayed.

Cassette SelectPress the cassette/CD button until “CASS”is displayed. “TAPE_A” or “TAPE_B” isdisplayed, depending on which side of thetape is playing.

CD Changer SelectPress the CD changer button until theCD changer symbol and track number aredisplayed. The last selected CD and trackbegin to play and the track number, DISCicon, and the CD number are displayed

CD SelectTo choose another CD, press the CD changerbutton until the desired CD number isdisplayed. You can also press and holdthe CD changer button to quickly advancethrough the CDs in the changer. Release thebutton to stop on the currently displayed CDnumber.

Steering Wheel ControlsThe Steering Wheel Controls allow youto keep your hands on the wheel whilecontrolling many radio functions.SteeringWheel Controls are not available withModel VR 100.

VolumePress the+ button to raise the volume orpress the– button to lower the volume. VOLis displayed with the number that representsthe volume level.

Radio Manual TuneWhile in the radio mode, press the>> or<<button for 1 second to activate a slowtune. Press the>> or <<button for 3 secondsto activate a fast tune.

Radio SeekPress the>> or << button for less than 1second to activate a Seek. The audio mutes.The radio searches and stops on the nextstation with a strong signal, and the audioreturns to the original volume. The scancontinues until a strong signal is found, butwill cancel the Seek after passing throughthe band without finding a strong signal.

Switched Auxiliary OutputsSwitched Auxiliary Outputs (SAOs) areavailable to power or control external devicessuch as a power antenna, external amplifieror rear seat audio. Model VR 100 has asingle SAO. All other Models have 3 SAOs.

Low-Level Audio OutputsAll radios except Model VR 100 havesingle-ended connections for low level audiooutputs for the right front, left front, rightrear and left rear audio signals. An optionalamplifier is typically used with low-leveloutputs.

Auxiliary Audio InputAll radios except Model VR 100 have 2monaural external audio inputs. Input #1can be used for applications like navigationwhile input #2 is useful as a telephone input.The auxiliary audio source is automaticallyselected by the telephone or navigation unitwhen properly connected through the controllines.

When either external audio source isselected, the radio will display EX AUDIOalong with any appropriate icons. The radioaudio functions can be adjusted in the sameway as they are in other modes.

To override Auxiliary Audio mode;

Press and hold MODE for 5 seconds. Theradio returns to the previous operating mode.

The radio will return to the previousoperating mode.

Selecting Speakers for Auxiliary AudioNavigation audio can be directed to the leftor right front speaker. To select the speakerfor Navigation audio, press and hold theSELECT knob for more than 3 seconds. Thedisplay shows 12/24_XX.

Rotate the SELECT knob through the variousoptions until the display shows Nav. X,where X is eitherL for left or R for the rightspeaker. To change between the left and rightspeaker selection, press the SELECT knob.

Phone audio can be directed to either thefront or all 4 speakers. To select the speakersfor phone audio, press and hold the SELECTknob for more than 3 seconds.

The display will show 12/24_XX. Thenrotate the SELECT knob through the variousoptions until the display shows PH_ X,where X is either FRONT or ALL. To changebetween the front or all speaker selection,press the SELECT knob.
