December 1 is World AIDS Day

Rotarians For Family Health and AIDS Prevention action group bringstogether Rotarians committed to fighting this disease and promotingfamily health . Find out how by clicking or tapping on this link.

RC Holy Spirit D3780 with the Rotaract & InteractClubs of Holy Spirit organized and sponsored the2nd annual youth forum on Anti-Drug Abuse andHIV/AIDS Prevention last October 28, 2012 in co-

operation with the Quezon City Red Cross. The forum was attended by some 70 Rotaractorsand Interactors, as well as by 17 Rotarians andguests. The topics were ably discussed by young, competent Red Cross facilitators, Mr Ruben Clara-vall, Jr and Ms Persian Rica Banggad who spiced upthe forum with fun exercises that evoked laughterand thought not only from the young attendees, butthe Rotarians present as well.

The outcome desired from the forum is to helpachieve ZERO new incidence of substance abuse

and HIV/AIDS affliction among the youth in Que-zon City.

Given the alarming rise of HIV infections in thecountry, the topics on HIV/AIDS and Drug Abuseare especially relevant. Per the latest data from theDOH (Department of Health), the number of casesfor the period January-August 2012 has risen to2,150 (118 of which have progressed into AIDS).The DOH is more alarmed due to the increasing

number of injecting drug users who contracted theinfection.

RCs Camp Aguinaldo, Loyola Heights, New ManilaEast, Pag-asa, SFDM and Timog who share commit-ment to help attain ZERO new incidence of afflic-tion, co-hosted the event.

In the discussions on dangerous drugs, the re-

source persons spoke on preventive measures -

    Close family ties

    Choose your friends

Community service projects such as those with Rota-ract and Interact clubs

    Community vigilance & information

The points emphasized in the HIV-AIDS session theresource persons reminded the youth and grown-

ups of the time-tested ABCDEFGH rule:

AIDS sickness due to HIV virus is fatal for which nocure has yet been developed.

In closing the forum, Holy Spirit President MarciaSalvador urged the attendees to share what theyvelearned with their relatives, friends and school-mates to help attain ZERO new incidence!

(This service project has been posted to RotaryShowcase of RI. Click on this link to view .)

More than 50 Interactors from District 9710 gathered at LaurelHill Forest Lodge in June for a weekend of learning and camara-derie at the district Interact conference. The Interact Club of Tum-barumba, chartered in 2011, hosted the event. The Interactors, together with exchange students from Belgium, Brazil, and Can-ada, learned to build an outdoor survival shelter and discussedtopics such as bullying. They also found out about local and inter-national Interact club projects and used Skype to talk with ex-change students in Sweden and Switzerland.

The Stampede Roundup is an outdoor music festival in Calgary,Alta., that features artists from around the world. It s also theRotary Club of Calgary s largest fundraiser. The 17th annual festi-val was held on 11 July and attracted a record 17,500 people. The event, which netted more than C$250,000 this year, benefitsterminally ill children at Alberta s first pediatric hospice. Perform-ers at this year s Stampede Roundup included the Tragically Hip,Matthew Good, and 54-40.

In the depths of last winter, Terry Williams, of the Rotary Club of Swindon North, decided to pitch a ShelterBox tent in the town

square and live in it for a week. Williams endured seven nights of below-freezing temperatures to raise funds for and publicize Shel-terBox, a nonprofit started by British Rotarian Tom Henderson.Williams received visitors from local schools and his Rotary club, and nearby businesses provided warm meals. By the end of theweek, Williams, who had aimed to raise 3,000 for ShelterBox,had brought in over 8,000. He donated a portion of that amountto the End Polio Now campaign.

In Mexico City, home to more than 8.5 million people, municipalwater resources are often strained. Heart 2 Heart, a project of District 4170 (Mexico) and seven districts in Illinois, Indiana, Lou-isiana, and Tennessee, USA, has installed clean water systems inover 50 schools there. Steel tanks holding 2,640 gallons of waterare connected to a school s internal plumbing system to provideclean water for drinking and hand washing. Local Rotarians or-ganize the construction and delivery of the water tanks, whichcost $3,500 each and should last up to 40 years. Area club mem-bers also assist with installation and plumbing, and train schoolofficials in maintenance. The government fills the tanks weekly,at no cost to the schools or Rotarians. Heart 2 Heart plans to in-stall tanks at an additional 50 to 60 schools.

People who send or read text messages while driving look awayfrom the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. At 55 miles perhour, that s all the time it takes for a car to travel 100 yards, orthe length of a football field. The Rotary Club of Dar-es-Salaam, in

association with Tanzanian police and private companies, organ-

ized a monthlong public service campaign in March to warn mo-torists about the dangers of using phones while driving. The clubprinted pamphlets and bumper stickers with the slogan Driving +Phone = Death and worked with police and Home Affairs Minis-try officials to distribute them. The slogan also appeared on abillboard, and local radio stations broadcast a jingle created forthe campaign.

Run-down and plagued by gang violence, Closter Park in Salinas,Calif., will soon get a makeover with the help of local Rotaryclubs, as well as clubs in India and Mexico. The Rotary Club of Salinas is leading the project, which aims to make the park a safehaven for families. Rotarians installed benches, picnic areas, and

a gazebo and are organizing youth activities and cultural events. The clubs have raised about $450,000 in cash and in-kind dona-tions.

Rotarians in the city of Barquisimeto, concerned about a growing incidence of HIV/AIDS, worked with local physicians to develop acurriculum for high school students on the risk factors associatedwith sexually transmitted diseases. Basing their program on onestarted by the Rotary Club of Cortland, N.Y., USA, to prevent teenpregnancies, members of the Rotary Club of Barquisimeto-NuevaSegovia trained student leaders to teach and mentor their class-mates. As part of the effort, all students are urged to be testedfor HIV. The program has become a model for Rotary clubs in Co-

lombia, Honduras, Belize, and Mexico, among other countries.

Rotary news in brief from around the globeThe Rotarian -- December 2012

Rotary clubs around the globe have manythings in common, including a commitmentto service. All year long, clubs are taking ac-tion to make a difference in their communi-

ties. Heres a roundup of recent club activi-ties.
