Time to get in shape! Beach weather is just around the corner and we have programs that can assist in

reaching your New Year’s Resolution…Get back in shape, lose weight, fit into that favorite swim suit. Join us at the HLS Facility or Aquatic Center for one of our 45 group fitness classes, form an intramural soccer team or how about “play by date” tennis. Fitness classes in the pool offer greater resistance and less impact with Zumba in the water. The HLS Facilty is a very social place to be, our staff is friendly and able to assist with work out suggestions. We have incentive programs with prizes such as Argo Peak or FIT 5 – 0. Wear a school

spirited Argonaut Tee and we’ll see you in the Rec.

Sport Club SpotlightThe University of West Florida Sport Clubs is comprised of over 20 active clubs ranging

from competitive to instructional based activity. Any student can participate in a Sport Club; the level of participation depends on the student! Throughout the year, clubs earn

points through various activities such as traveling, events, fundraisers, community service and completing various administrative tasks. These points translate into funding

from the Student Government Association. Clubs are active year round, however, competition may occur in a specific season for individual clubs. All contact information

for Sport Clubs can be found at http://uwf.edu/recreation/SportClubs.

Thank you running club!Good luck this semester!

Interview with Running Club President Megan and Vice President DanielleWhy should students join the running club? Running is a healthy habit, great hobby, and anyone can do it. Do you have to be an advanced runner? No, running is for every athlete and for every skill level. How much does it cost to join? Dues are $20 per semester. What are the benefits of being a member of the running club?Members are eligible for a free t-shirt and race reimbursements whenthey have paid their dues. The running club endorses team support and encouragement. Members who join and participate in practices are eligible for the club to pay for local road races like McGuire’s Halloween Run and St. Patrick Day Run. How often do you meet? Practices for the advanced runners and the beginning runners are separated based upon skill level. How does the running club get involved in the community? The club is involved in the McGuire’s Training Run. Being around a crowd of people encourages the runners to run faster. The training run provides a fun atmosphere and the ability to practice off campus and run in downtown Pensacola. McGuire’s also provides food after the training run. Does the running club offer any trips or excursions? The running club’s main goal is to have one out of town trip every semester. For the spring semester we will go to Kissimmee, Florida for the Foam Fest. We want this semester trip to be fun and something everyone could enjoy as a group. Can individuals who are not enrolled in school still participate? Anyone can run with the club, but student members are only allowed to receive the race reimbursements. A great number of alumni and faculty members run with the running club. What are your personal reasons for getting involved? Megan: I have been running since I was 12 years old. I ran for the UWF Cross Country team for two years. After deciding to leave the Cross Country team, I wanted to continue running in a team because it gave me the opportunity to be in a cohesive group that supports each other and it relieves stress. I always wanted to coach a running team and through the Running Club I am gaining that experience.Danielle: I ran Cross Country in high school and with UWF. After leaving the Cross Country team at UWF, I slacked off on running because I did not have a team or coach support to push me. I was able to start running again and I learned how it feels when others say “ I don’t see how you can go running.” After starting over, the first few weeks are hard, but once you continue to run it will get easier. It does not take long for running to become a habit. How would you like the running club to grow?We would like to promote our club to get new members but to also get people aware that there are people meeting up to run, so they will not have to do it alone. We want to provide a stronger internal bonding by interaction with the members and the inspiration they receive from running.

Personal Training

How can I get enough nutrients without consuming too many calories? Avoid eating food high in sugar, solid fats and alcoholic beverages; these provide

calories but are a poor source of essential nutrition. Eating food like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and low-fat dairy products will help you get nutrients without excess

calories.

Is it better to do my cardio workout before or after my strength training exercises?

Your primary workout goal will decide whether you do your cardio workout before or after your strength training. If your goal is to better your cardiovascular endurance, do your cardio

workout first; this way your muscles are fresh and not tired from the strength training. However, if your main goal is to gain strength, it is best to do your cardio workout last. This way

you will have the power needed for heavy lifting.

What should I eat before, during and after my exercise? Before exercising, your meal should consist of a 300-600 calorie meal 3-4 hours before

exercise. These meals should be primarily carbs, but contain some protein to prevent an upset stomach.

Example: Toast and peanut butter or oatmeal with milk, fruit and nuts.

Having a meal during exercise can be hard. So eating during a break in exercise should consist of easily digestible carbohydrates.

Example: Energy beans, Bananas, Oranges, or Sports gels.

Within 30 minutes after exercise, a ratio of 2:1, carbs:protein, should be eaten.Example: Chocolate milk, a nutrition bar (Clif bar), or a smoothie with yogurt and fruit.

What do you do in your spare time? In my spare time I do yard work, play golf, depending on the season I fish, travel and walk my dog.

What is your favorite book? My favorite books are novels by John Grisham:

A Time to Kill, Litigation, The Client, The Confession.

What is your favorite recreational activity?I played soccer until I was 40, volleyball until 60. Now, my favorite recreational activity is golf and I enjoy working out through walking.

What is your favorite sport to watch? All UWF teams, Go Argos! US men’s and women’s soccer, Boston Celtics and college football.

What is your favorite team? All UWF teams, I enjoy all Florida teams advancing in the playoffs and Illinois basketball.

What is the most important personal attribute that you bring to work? The most important attributes I bring to work are taking work seriously, adding humor on a daily basis, loyalty to staff and the university, being level-headed, and being consistent over a long period of time.

What is the single most important factor that you would change about your job?“I would not change anything about my job. I enjoy watching the student development from the program, the facility development and many UWF recreation grads are now running programs around the country at institutions of higher education.”

Just for fun, what is the weirdest thing you have ever eaten? The weirdest thing I have ever eaten was a chocolate covered bug in the 70’s.
