Hello all, and welcome back to our winter issue. As I write this letter, winter is beginning to creep in on us. We’ve had some crazy storms very early this year, which proved devastating for some. I would like to extend our well wishes to all that experienced loss from Hurricane Sandy, and let’s hope the worst is behind us so we can sail through the cold season and right back into the spring (muddy) riding weather.

I would also like to extend a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone. Please enjoy your holiday with family and celebrate responsibly.

Wow, what an issue we have for you. Please enjoy all of the local coverage that our great contributors have put together for you. These past months it seems we have been all over the place, and it seems quite a while since we last checked in. So, here we go.

Enjoy our coverage from upstate N.Y. Although it rained sideways and for days while I was there, we were able to check out some of their trail system. Also see reports from their ATV Association in this issue as well as a new trail map. The Rec Riding Crew attended the ATR Poker Run at the AOAA in October, and they have a full blown report on the new ZX6 from CF Moto. After that, check out reports from Denny Mann on the ANF Trail System and a few of the public state ATV Trails.

Also new in this issue: watch for our regular reports from the fine folks at Fisher’s ATV World. Each issue we try to bring you the best of the local riding opportunities available and now the Fish Crew will be reporting on riding destinations that you and your family or club can enjoy outside of our area.

Official Test Review CF Moto Z6 This issue the guys at Karn’s Performance, located

in Mechanicsburg, Pa., were kind enough to lend us one of their CF Moto Side x Sides to do a quick weeklong review. To most of us, CF Moto is a new name in the off-road industry; however, new to North America, CF Moto has been in business for 20 years. Even so, we thought we would put it through its paces.

Right off the bat, we liked its stance. Our test unit had nice lines, sporty wheels and looks the part of an all out sport machine. The 600cc, liquid-cooled engine fired to life with the turn of a key, and the exhaust note hinted that there might be a little bit of zip in this guy. (Insert theme music now).

After poking around a bit, kicking the tires and doing a few suspension tests, we climbed in and hit the trail. The adjustable steering wheel caught our attention as well as the four point seatbelt system. The seats fit us well and offered great support. The emergency brake set up was nice, and worked, but was not strong enough for any e-brake slides. The shifter provided low, high, neutral, and reverse transmission offerings. Shifting between gears was not the smoothest we have tested but never provided any problems. The pedal layout is nice and worked great for everyday driving, but if you like to drive with two feet it takes a little getting used to.

With a spin of the tires, we were off. There is a little sport here, as the Z6 has very good low end power. Out on to the test track we went and turned lap after lap. The suspension worked very well under normal conditions, and when pushed, responded better than we anticipated. The four wheel disc brakes worked great all day, even when pushed hard. The pedal pressure is a little stiff, but again nothing we could not live with. Sliding into the turn feels very comfortable and the Z6 handled quite well despite suffering from a bit of understeer.

Off the track and into the woods, and this little guy is pretty quick. The four-wheel drive works with the push of a button, and differential lock is there if the going gets tough. A front-mount winch is also a nice standard feature. Storage will accommodate a full size cooler in the cargo bed and a couple of little items under the hood. The dash is pretty cool, too, as digital numbers display speed, gas, engine temp and a clock.

At the end of the day the CF Moto Z6 left all of us smiling. It worked flawlessly throughout all of our testing. I believe we logged almost 100 miles of track and trail. We slid it through the mud, got all fours off the ground, pushed it in the turns, and four wheeled in the mud.

So, is it for you? Well, that depends. If you’re looking to get out and ride the trails with your buddies, then yes, we’d say so. The Z6 does everything pretty good. At the end of the day we were impressed with the CF Moto Z6.

This sport 600 was sure footed no matter where we went.

The ZX 6 cornered well and got us where we wanted to go.

Over the summer I taught three DCNR Youth ATV Safety courses and rode a couple of times in Buchanan State Forest at the state’s two owned ATV Riding Parks, Martin Hill and Sideling Hill. Both are very nice riding parks, and I would give each a four star rating. Yet, during my five visits, I have only seen one other rider. Yes, there are rocks, but without heavy use and because of good trail maintenance, the trail systems are in great shape. These areas are hidden gems in southcentral Pennsylvania. Martin Hill is located in Bedford County, and Sideling Hill is located in Fulton County. The two trail systems are an hour apart, with the town of Breezewood, Pa., the “city of motels” in the middle, providing great lodging opportunities.

For entry level riders, the 18 miles of trail at the Martin Hill area are the best fit. Beginners will really enjoy Evitts Mountain Road Trail, which runs from the Tower Road parking lot to point 8 on the Martin Hill map located on the web at http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/atv/CH_ATV_4-04.pdf. For the true beginner, however, I would recommend parking at the towers a quarter of a mile past the ATV parking lot on Tower Road, because the start of Evitts Mountain Road Trail is somewhat technical. Within the Martin Hill area, the Refuge Trail is the only trail requiring upper level ability because of the steep hill grade. The rest of the Martin Hill trail system caters

toward intermediate riders. Other than Refuge Trail, all of the up hills have been re-routed with switch back and good drainage. District 2 has spent a lot of money correcting water problems, and the system holds up after a hard rain. My favorite trail was a short connector through a pine forest leading to the picnic table marked on the trail map just below point 2. This is where the only restroom can be found in the area, even though restrooms are not marked on the trail maps. Martin Hill is a great spot for riding and is easy to find. Route 376 starts on U.S. Route 30 between Bedford and Everett. Just follow 376 south 11.3 miles to the top of the mountain, and the ATV parking lot, marked point 1 on the map, is on the left at the summit.

For more advanced riders, check out the Sideling Hill ATV Trail system located in Wells Tannery just off Route 915. This system consists of 15 miles of marked trails according to the map, but we found legal trails that are not marked on the map. In my opinion, the system is closer to 18 miles in length. For the best parking, travel up Cove Road past the first parking lot to the parking lot marked on the map as point 8. You will find new restroom facilities and plenty of room to park. For the beginner, a good ride is out of the parking lot at point 8, across Cove Road to point 7, right onto Huckleberry Trail, and right onto the main trail, ending in the parking lot marked point 21. The further you travel into the system the more difficult the riding will become, so for a low level intermediate ride, you could continue through the point 21 parking lot out to point 19 and take a right onto Meredith Trail. There is a rock uphill, but it isn’t very difficult. Point marker 9 is at the end of Meredith Trail and taking a right there will bring you back to your vehicle. For driving directions to Sideling Hill ATV Trail system, use the Sideling Hill map located on the web at http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/atv/SH_ATV_4-04.pdf.

The ATV riding in Buchanan State Forest is first-rate and makes for a great weekend outing. An additional site of interest in the area is the abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike tunnel located just off Route 915 on Oregon Road. Oregon Road is the first left after crossing the Turnpike and is on your way to the Sideling Hill Riding Park. Remember, state owned ATV areas are funded with your ATV registration money and are free for your usage, so go check them out.

The first time that the Rec Rider Crew visited AOAA, the place was more of an idea. It was more of a proposition on poster board… literally. I bet Pat, Kathy, and Dave know exactly what I’m speaking about. Since that visit, though, this enormous property has received almost $2 million in funding from many different government agencies, all with the idea of reclaiming forgotten land and allowing responsible land stewardship. I have to be honest, on our first visit (detailed in the October 2011 issue of Rec Rider), I was skeptical about the idea of our government shelling out millions to allow me to ride. Government backed riding? Yeah, right.

Since then, things have turned out a little different than I expected. If I had to guess, the teamwork of a handful of hopefuls has prevailed. Upon our return, the place was alive, featuring people, sponsors, benefit rides, etc. On the day we were there, we had the honor of attending the Geisinger’s Children’s Miracle Network and the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital benefit. This event was sponsored by the Anthracite Trail Riders and hosted by the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area. We actually rode our dirt bikes for the financial benefit of the children. Amazing. At this point, I feel like I’ve seen it all! Having grown up in an environment where “riding” was seen as devilish or even menacing, never did I think our sport would be allowed to meld with civilization. By civilization, I mean hospitals, government agencies, commissioners, locals, etc. This just didn’t seem possible to me.

Moving on, the trails felt like home and were rocky, rough and ancient. This type of environment takes many, many years to develop. Industry formed these topographical features throughout years of coal mining, and off-road enthusiasts refined them into the beautiful terrain we can enjoy today. We were lucky enough to have rain on our ride day. I know that sounds a little bit nuts, but rain keeps dust to a minimum. Rain also keeps puddles full to the brim. Puddles which can be used for drenching one of your crewmembers! Of course, all in good fun. We rode 25 miles through tight, steep single track as well as lakeside sands. Midway through our trip, we were politely greeted by a “middle of the woods” food wagon. Muddy riders gathered round telling tales about the first leg of the ride. Most stories began with “Did you see when I…” and ended with “That was awesome!” The coffee and the delicious bean soup satisfied us immensely.

We mounted our “steeds” and trickled back onto the trail, only to realize that we somehow gathered an extra eight dirt bikers into our gang, Pretty sweet if you ask me. Without any verbal communication, we ALL were on the same page. Ever seen 10 bikes ride a rocky trail all within feet of each other? It’s a sight that everyone, and I mean everyone, should experience at some level. These are the moments that become engrained in our soul. The utter excitement of screaming engines, blurring scenery, and fellow super hero-looking creatures, all racing for a goal…to smile, laugh, and high-five in pure excitement. This is why we ride.

The day ended. We enjoyed a few more great conversations back at the base camp, then headed toward home. Bubba’s Sports Bar offered a place to wash our hands. Ironically enough, we wound up shaking hands with a restaurant full of locals who truly support our sport. From beginning to end, this cool, dreary day turned out to generate some of the warmest, soul satisfying moments. Let’s hear it for the taxpayers, the children, the doctors, the volunteers, and most importantly…the cooperation of many.

If in the world of public land one property rises to the top of the heap in Pennsylvania, the Allegheny National Forest (or ANF for short) is the recreational Mecca. The ANF is 517,000 natural acres of enjoyment for everyone, both motorized and non-motorized outdoor recreationalists alike. My first two visits to ANF were business oriented as a Pennsylvania Off-Highway Vehicles Association Representative. Both outings coincided with the spring running of Tour De Forest, and the Marienville office of the ANF graciously hosted a meeting/ride with PaOHV. After my second visit this past May, I realized how wonderful the ANF is, so I purchased an ATV/OHM annual pass for the Allegheny National Forest motorized trail system.

Over the course of 2012, I rode five days and had the pleasure of riding both the networks of gravel roads and the motorized trail system in the ANF. My first ride was an ATV outing with the folks from the Marienville office on the Timberline Trail System. Then my second excursion came from the saddle of my street legal dual sport motorcycle on the various roads throughout the ANF. Lastly, was a three day visit at the end of Sep-tember, riding my dual sport motorcycle and combining the thrill of my first two trips by connecting the ATV/OHM trail systems with roads.

Let me break down the opportunities that exist for motorized recreation in the Allegheny National Forest. First, for the non-street legal crowd with ATVs and dirt bikes, the ANF offers the following trail system opportuni-ties:

All of the trails above are open to both motorcycles and ATVs at the low rate of $10.00 per day or $35.00 per year. So, anyone planning to ride more than three days in the ANF may want to purchase one of the an-nual passes. Annual passes can be purchased for the following timeframes/seasons:

With 106.8 miles of riding available for the off roader, the Allegheny National Forest is the perfect choice for families with children 8 years old and older. The Timberline Trail system is the perfect place for riders of all

ages and abilities. The Rocky Gap area is the most scenic, with giant rocks and trails that feel like a bobsled run. Finally, the Marienville Bike Trail is a challenge for the adventurous and skilled riders alike.

For the off road only group, I have good news. Thanks to many of the local business owners, lodging exists with trail access. Due to their efforts, township roads are open to off roaders over the age of 16. This allows ATV and dirt bike tourists to just unload their vehicles once and ride for multiple days while staying at various private motels and camp grounds. Also, this same group of business owners fought to open trails on Sundays throughout the month of October for foliage viewing.

For the dual sport and adventure riders, there is an extensive net-work of gravel roads that exist within the Allegheny National Forest. Lit-erally, hundreds of miles of gravel roads are open to licensed vehicles. The Motor Vehicle Use Map, Allegheny National Forest is your bible. This map is available through the Marienville office by calling (814) 927-6628. The map’s Seasonal and Special Vehicle Designations section is the key for road closures and staying on roads that are open for your enjoyment. Although, the current map, which was printed July 29, 2011, is now dated because of the gas and oil well drilling boom in the ANF; a new map will be available by mid-season 2013 with even more riding opportunities. Al-though, The Motor Vehicle Use Map is a must, it doesn’t contain township roads or the names of roads. For the best experience, I recommend using both the Motor Vehicle Use Map and a GPS unit to prevent riding on closed roads.

Several gravel roads within the network that I find worth riding are Slater Run Road (#221), Kingsley Road (#180D through Mayburg), Farn-sworth Road (#154), Forest Road (#437 to Chapman Dam State Park), Bobbs Creek Road (#116), Branch Ridge Road (#127), and Mosier Road (#133 through Tionesta National Scenic Area). All are Adventure Bike friendly, and the views are truly spectacular.

The Allegheny National Forest is a dual sport bike paradise because both systems are open to riders with the purchase of the ATV/ORM trail pass. During my last trip to the ANF on my dual sport motorcycle, I rode 300 miles in three days. I could easily connect ATV trails with gravel roads. The Timberline/Marienville trail system and the Rocky Gap trail system can be connected with a minimal amount of pavement. This loop alone can be up to 150 miles in length. The only limit is your gas tank. A good resource for gas station locations is the ANF Recreation Areas map or the Snowmobile Trail System map.

Do you know that feeling you get when you’re making a race track out of mowing the lawn? (Oh - maybe that’s just me trying to get done faster) Anyway - way back in September I ended up at the Wiconisco Speedway for the annual National Lawnmower point’s race. What an awesome event! I have to admit I was a little skeptical about it at first. I thought to myself, “How exciting could watching slow lawn mowers race in a circle be?” Boy, was I wrong.

Of course, you do have your single cylinder everyday lawn mowers out there racing, but once those giant twin cylinders start to rumble, things begin to get exciting. These guys and girls are wheel to wheel, three tractors wide through the corners. They are beating and banging off of each other’s bumpers, and even rolling these things. Nothing like a lawn mower sideways the whole way through the corner, counter steering then wheeling out of it! Who would have thought these mowers were capable of all this?

After a little research, I found the quickest of the pack are capable of hitting the 80mph mark with a long enough straight stretch. Everything from full gauge clusters to racing seats and disc brakes, these guys can wrap up to $4,000 in a tractor. It’s like a full scale race car in the form of lawn equipment. There are many different classes with a variety of rules, but I don’t want to bore you with the petty details, so I say get out there and see the action for yourself. It is a lot of fun for the whole family, although I do suggest taking some ear plugs!

As for the racing, they were able to fit a couple of races in on Saturday before the rain came and the mud started flying. Eventually, conditions got to the point where they had to rain delay the remainder of the races and restart them early on Sunday. The competitors ran heat races just like your typical dirt trackers, then the winner went on to start on the pole of their feature race. By the end of the day, they crowned 11 different winners, with the trophy for the Super Mod Twins going to Brian “Skip” Deeter.

2012 Tug Hill Experience and ATV ExpoSept. 22 – 23, 2012 • Lewis County, NY

Late September took us a few hours north to the Tug Hill Plateau, which has become famous for its excellent snowmobiling opportunities. I have been working with the local ATV Association there along with the trail director of Lewis County to help promote their ATVing opportunities to our fine readers.

I know, there are tons of great places to ride in PA, but occasionally some of us like to wander in new directions to see what else is out there. One of the most popular out-of-state riding spots is the Hatfield McCoy Trail System down in West Virginia (see the Fisher’s ATV report elsewhere in this issue). H and M to date has gotten more mainstream press, so it seems more of us know about it.

I’m here to tell you that one of the East’s best kept secrets lies in the other direction. Not that Hatfield isn’t a great place for an ATV adventure, but take a weekend and grab your buddies or your family and point that rig north. Straight up Route 81 and hang a hard right and within a few hours you’ll have hundreds of miles of riding right under your wheels.

Unfortunately when I was there, we had lots of Lake Effect rain, so I chickened out and only did some minimal riding. What I can tell you is that they offer miles of dirt roads that connect sections of trail that was pretty nice to ride. I can also tell you that their trails lead right up to motels and restaurants that could take you days to explore if you so desired. Future plans call for the linking of several counties in the area, and from what I’m told, that would put 1,200 miles of riding together that will become an ATV and off-road rider’s paradise. A Lewis County trail pass is needed, but for around $85 or less you get unlimited riding for the whole year.

This particular weekend offered an expo with industry vendors, test rides from manufacturers, a visit from the folks at Fisher’s ATV World and, yes, two days of bliss (muddy riding that is). I have to give the people credit, however--the vendors came, and the riders came. The turnout was pretty good for the early season monsoon that we experienced. They tell me up on the plateau you never know what you’re going to get.

Anyhow, it turned out to be a fun weekend hanging out with some great people and a promise to return in the spring to check out more of that soon-to-be-famous trail system. Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association is located in Lewis County of northern New York, better known as the Tug Hill region. The Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association serves as a voice for area ATV clubs, members, businesses, area land owners who permit use of land, and ATV enthusiasts to promote ATVing in the Tug Hill region. The ATV Association works closely with Lewis County’s Department of Recreational Trails coordinator, ATV clubs, private land owners and businesses in the development and maintenance of trails in Lewis County.

At the current time the Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association serves five counties located in northern and central New York. Area clubs are encouraged to join the Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association for the many things we have to offer.

We work in conjunction with Lewis County and the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce to provide participating club members a 50% discount on Lewis County Trail Permits with over 500 miles of riding.

The Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association maintains a website at • http://tughilladirondacksatv.com to provide our affiliated clubs a central place to showcase their club for potential new members with links, apps, etc.

We provide ATV riders with up-to-date information on what is going on •in the ATV world, such as legislation in Albany, a newsletter sign-up, and a Facebook page.

A calendar of events, which list ATV rides, meetings and special events •being held by the Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association and affiliated clubs.

These are just some of the tools we can provide in helping to create and maintain a sustainable trail system.

Each year in early spring, the Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association sponsors our annual event of the ATV riding season on the first Saturday in May, which for several years had been known as our “Trail Development Ride.” Starting in 2013, it will be renamed as the “Dick Seller Memorial Ride” in honor of one of our past presidents of the Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association.

Throughout the summer the Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association sponsors rides, such as “Ride the Tug,” and these events are geared for ATV riders to spend a day riding Tug Hill with a member of the Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association to see this ever growing trail system and where your membership dollars are going. To take part in these events a Lewis County Trail Permit is required, as participants ride the Lewis County Reforestation Trails.

At the end of the ATV riding season in Lewis County, we sponsor an expo called the “Tug Hill Experience ATV Expo,” which will be held in 2013 on the 21st & 22nd of September at Flat Rock Inn. The last ride of the season follows, which is called “The Buck Run – Last Ride Before the Bucks Run.”

At the expo, some of the ATV manufacturers will be on hand to showcase their newest ATV models and will also provide demo rides that will take you out for about a 15 minute ride in the woods. The event will also feature vendors, entertainment, food, etc. So keep an eye on our ATV Expo website at http://.tughillatvexpo.com to read updated information as we move closer to September. Oswego Valley ATV Club, Inc.

Oswego Valley ATV Club is located northwest of Syracuse in Hannibal, N.Y., Oswego County. The club was formed in 2007 by founding president Jim Marra, and membership has grown to over 450 members. The club maintains 38 miles of family-oriented trails open to ATV riding from Hannibal, N.Y., to Fair Haven, N.Y., and south to Cato, N.Y. Oswego Valley ATV Club offers a wide variety of terrain for our members, with 38 miles of both privately and county owned trails available. Our trails vary in terrain and include those that are muddy, curvy, hilly, and flat to suit different riders. Food and gas are available at a variety of locations accessible from the trails. A trail committee maintains our trail system in good working order to insure that trails are safe and enjoyable for all. We are actively pursuing the expansion of our trail system and welcome input from our members. We have two annual “Best Hand Rides,” one in June and one at the end of the season. The Advantage of Pay to Ride ParksRec Rider Staff Report

This October we had a few friends come down to visit us from New England to check out our local trails. We wanted to take them to a park that was close to home, so we ended up at Rausch Creek Trailriders in Valley View, Pa. Now, just as some of you probably have, I grew up riding the vast coal banks and strip mines here in the wonderful state of Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, many days were spent dodging “the law,” due to the fact that the land was either privately owned or we were on State Game Lands. Although I personally do not condone illegal riding, I know that some people are up in arms about riding parks and clubs coming in and taking over the land they grew up on. I have heard all kinds of complaints such as “I shouldn’t have to pay,” “I am the only reason the trails are here,” and even “If it weren’t for me and my friends, this place wouldn’t even exist.” Well, though I’m sure some of that is true, you still have to look at the bright side of these parks and clubs. Once you sit down and talk to someone about the riding parks, you will find out it really is not a bad idea. Here’s why:

For example, the club that became Rausch Creek was formed to avoid the complete closure to riding on over 17,000 acres by a landowner fed up with vandalism and the liabilities that go along with turning a blind eye to “outlaw riding.” Now anyone can join the club, which is open all year long, with the exception of a few days here and there. With a price tag of $340 a year per person, it breaks down to just a little over a dollar a day. For an additional fee, family and camping packages are also available. Now let’s say you’re out on a trail and something has happened to you or a friend, whether it is a break down or even something worse like an injury. Instead of having to figure out how to limp home or direct emergency crews to your location, you simply get the phone number off of your helmet sticker that Rausch provides to all its members and call the front desk for help. Staff know exactly where you are (as long as you are on the marked trails) and know the best way to assist you in your time of need. Then there is the great camping and camaraderie involved in having a camp site on location, which allows you to take the whole family for a weekend vacation or adventure every weekend! Plus, with a

general store full of your basic riding needs, such as food, drinks, and even tools and an air pump, just about everything you need is covered for a great week or weekend of riding. On top of that, there is no way possible to own thousands of acres of land for only $340 a year.

There are also many other great benefits to joining a club or riding park, such as holiday events, special rides, community events and much more. I know the day that we happened to be at Rausch, they were putting on a haunted house and a blood drive. The parks and clubs are the best thing to happen to the areas once poached by many of us riders. They are much safer and much cheaper than that $500 fine you could receive f rom “The Man” if you’re caught riding where you aren’t supposed to be. So with all of that being said, it is best, in my opinion, for you to go and check out your local club or park to see what they are all about. Summer and Winter trailSThese trails are open during the summer and winter seasons. The summer season runs from the Friday before Memorial Day through the last full weekend in September. The winter season runs from the day following the last day of the regular or extended antlerless deer season as established by the Game Commission through the following April 1. There are some trails that remain closed until after the late muzzleloader season. Please check with the individual forest district to see when the trails will open for the winter season.

- Burnt mills - Pike County 7 miles of summer and winter trail. Access is from a parking area on Route 402, one mile south of Porters Lake. Registered Class II ATVs are permitted on this trail that are less than 58” in width and less than 1,200 pounds. Contact: Delaware State Forest, HC 1 Box 95A, Swiftwater, PA 18370. - adams & Cumberland Counties36 miles of summer trail. During the winter season the trail system is expanded to 42 miles by using some dirt roads that are gated during the winter. Part of the trail system is shared with snowmobiles when there is sufficient snowfall. The trail is located between Big Flat and Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Access to these are from parking lots located at Big Flat along Shippensburg Road about 1-1/4 miles north of its intersection with Route 233 and on Piney Mountain along Bendersville Road south of Pine Grove Furnace State Park. Registration, Titling and Insuring Your ATVWho must register and title?All ATVs in Pennsylvania, except ATVs used solely for business or agricultural purposes, need to be registered and titled with DCNR. ATVs used in Pennsylvania must be registered and titled with DCNR’s Snowmobile/ATV Section. The ATV registration and titling fees are NOT user fees for the privilege of using trails on state-owned land. The fees provide funding to administer the program, maintain trails in DCNR-managed parks and forests, and provide grants to profit and non-profit organizations for developing additional riding opportunities.

Plates and decals An ATV owner will be issued a registration plate for the vehicle. An expiration sticker to be affixed to the plate will be issued for standard registrations.

liability insurance If you are using your ATV solely on land owned or leased by you, you are not required to get liability insurance. All other riders must carry liability insurance. Proof of that insurance must be carried with you when you ride. There are no minimum requirements or coverage standards established by DCNR or the Snowmobile/ATV Law for the liability insurance.

- Allegheny National ForestThe federally-operated Allegheny National Forest has more than 100 miles of ATV trails. ATV trail season runs from the Friday before Memorial Day through the last Sunday in September. Winter season is from December 20 to April 1. Contact the Allegheny National Forest Supervisor’s Office, P.O. Box 847, 222 Liberty Street, Warren, PA 16365, (814) 723-5150. Effective July 1, 2002, the Allegheny National Forest implemented the Fee Demo Program for ATV and motorized bike trails. An annual $35 permit fee is required, and can be purchased from any Allegheny National Forest office, and some local vendors, or online at www.fs.fed.us/r9/allegheny.

The following trails are within the Allegheny National Forest (ANF). Please contact the ANF using the information above concerning these trails:

Marienville ATV/Bike Trail on State Route 66 east of the town of Marienville.

Timberline ATV Trail accessed from State Route 948, north of Ridgway (also connects to the Marienville ATV Trail).

Rocky Gap ATV Trail accessed from Township Road 3005, southeast of Warren.

Willow Creek ATV Trail on the eastern side of the Allegheny Reservoir, just south of the New York State line. Closed during the winter season.

- Motorcycle and/or ATV Riding AreasSeven Mountains Ramble (Dual Sport Licensed Motorcycles) - Riding areas are located in portions of Mifflin, Snyder and Union Counties in the Bald Eagle Forest. Loop 1 starts at the 7 Mountains Campground, located just south of Potters Mill or west of Milroy on Route 22/322. Compensation for Campground owner for parking strongly recommended. Proceed on Sand Mountain road to the trailhead at Ground Oak trail. The loop is about 30 miles long. - Shade Mountain Trails - (Non-Licenced Off-Highway Motorcycles)

When planning an ATV adventure, it’s good to have expectations of what you will see and do while on your trip. In our travels for filming the television show, Fisher’s ATV World (Outdoor Channel), we visit lots of new places to ride, so we wanted to share some of this information to help prepare you for your trip. Do you like to creep through the mountainside and then stop at the overlooks where you sit back to take it all in or are you the type that just wants to keep the wheels turning, hitting every mud hole, roosting your buddies and racing to see who makes it to the next corner? No matter what type of riding you are looking for, you’re sure to find it at the Hatfield & McCoy Trails in West Virginia!

This area is rich in history with the Hatfield & McCoy Feud and coal mines, plus has lots of different riding areas that are sure to please anyone in your group. Every season offers something new, with beautiful scenery such as overlooks and tree-lined creek side trails to mud and snow-covered trails that make your adventure a little more challenging.

There are six different trail systems that make up the Hatfield & McCoy Trail System, all of which encompass approximately 500 miles of private trails for you to enjoy. A detailed map of each trail can be found online or at one of the local businesses or trailheads that sell the yearly permits. These maps are color coded, and all of their trails are clearly marked, making it easy to navigate. The trails range from easy for any skill level to more challenging trails that may not be for the faint of heart. We found that the terrain can change very quickly from flat and sandy to areas that are rough and rocky. There are also areas that will entertain the mud enthusiast, and we found out firsthand that some of those mud holes don’t have bottoms!

This entire trail system was designed and passed through West Virginia legislation to generate economic development through tourism. The towns that each trail system passes through are VERY ATV friendly. You can ride your ATV, Side by Side or even a motorcycle right down the streets of these towns. Our latest trek to Hatfield & McCoy Trails took us there in mid- to late fall for their annual Trailfest event. The town of Gilbert is where the Fish Crew called home for a couple days, and everywhere we went, we used our ATVs to get there. We rode to the fast food establishments, grocery stores, movie theater, gas stations or even to

another part of the trail system. If you are in need of a place to kick your boots off and call home for a weekend,

there are plenty of places to stay and eat while you are visiting these trails. This area has lots of hotels and motels scattered throughout the area, as well as inns and lodges that are sure to have all the comforts of home that you desire. Now if you want to rough it a little more, there are plenty of campgrounds that offer primitive camping and full hookups.

If you’re looking for a great adventure that’s close to home, we think you will enjoy riding the Hatfield & McCoy Trails as much as we do. The Back Mountain Enduro Riders would like to thank all of our members, families, and friends who made this past riding season a good one. Without you the success of our events would not be possible. We would also like to thank Jim Bull and the Rec Rider crew for allowing small clubs, like us, to be able to have this publication for our reports. It helps our sport in so many great ways. Thanks, Jim!!

Except for the “hard core,” and you know who you are, most riders in the North have their bikes winterized for the upcoming winter season. Personally, I make sure the carburetors are empty, metal gas tanks are topped off with a little Sta-bil added, the plastic gas tanks are drained, and the anti freeze is ok for the winter. I disconnect the battery on the DRZ, because the clock will kill it, and that’s it. They are done. So if a warm winter day comes, or I feel like playing in the snow, the startup procedure is very simple. Cold weather riding can be as enjoyable as riding in the warmer weather as long as you are properly prepared. Make sure tire pressure is adjusted, dress warmly, and you’re good to go. The sights are so different and the air feels and smells so clean in the winter. It makes the rides very enjoyable, like you are riding somewhere new instead of your favorite place, and the riding season never really has to end.

For anyone interested in supporting the sport of motorcycling, whether it’s off road, on road, touring, or dual sport riding, you should look into joining a club. It’s a great satisfaction to be involved in promoting successful events, finding new opportunities to ride, and meeting new friends and families. The attached photo is some of our members and friends who volunteered to be the road patrol for the 31st annual Wilkes Barre Triathlon this past August, which our club has been doing for many years. The Back Mountain Enduro Riders are always looking for new members that would like to be involved in promoting events and enjoying fun runs and rides. Our club meetings are the first Thursday of every month at The Farmers Inn in Shavertown, Pa. Indian Creek Valley ATV ClubI’d like to think that our club’s focus on providing

great trail riding is the reason we continue to grow. We spent about $5,000 on dozer work to improve some rocky trails. Our team also cleared storm damage after the late spring snow and all the wind storms that highlighted our spring season. We do have a great set of trails, and we continue to focus our efforts on providing a great riding experience.

But truth be told, I think it’s the lack of available riding areas that are helping to increase our numbers. We keep hearing about “favorite” (non legal) riding areas not available anymore. Prices at the commercial riding areas continue to increase and the cost of getting to them keeps going up as well.

It’s probably a combination of all these factors that helped us surpass our goal of 250 members with more than 260 family memberships and over 450 tags. We had two great open houses with about 180 visitors. In addition, our club picnic was attended by about 100 members, and the auction raised enough money to buy a chainsaw and some other tools for the club.

Our members continue to enjoy club trips to other riding areas. In addition to some Pennsylvania rides, we had two trips to Hatfield-McCoy and a week-long trip to Vermont.

If you live in southwest PA and you are losing your favorite riding area or just tired of driving to the commercial areas, come out and check out our club. We have a nice set of trails and a great group of people.


Patience, this is a word that I thought was used to describe one’s demeanor while waiting your turn at the grocery store when you know the big game’s about to start. I always thought I had plenty of this because of the path in life that I chose. I chose to get married, so everyone knows that I have lots of patience. Well, at least I think I do. Maybe my wife would tell you it is the other way around, but we won’t ask her. My patience has been tested many times in life, probably just as much as the next guy’s and even in ways that I couldn’t prepare for. The picture that you have already looked at relates to the “patience” that I will talk about. This deer I have named Patience.

You see, I started seeing this deer long before this picture was taken. Like many other hunters, whether or not you hunt private or public lands, I have favorite stand spots that I like to spend most of my hunting time in or around. The particular spot where this deer was living in just happened to be one of those spots. I have even gone as far as naming this area because of the success that I have had while hunting there. This particular area I have labeled “Death Valley.” I have harvested many deer out of this area, which happens to be a draw that the deer use as a travel area. A couple of scouting trips many years ago helped me to determine that this would be an excellent place to put a tree stand. I then hunted it with a bow, a muzzleloader, a slug gun and then a rifle. With every weapon that I have used there, there was always an end result of at least one deer every time I climbed

a tree to my stand. Even though I did not always get the trophy I was looking for, I always came home with meat to store in my freezers. And this is where I first met Patience.

Patience showed up one day at the very bottom end of Death Valley. I caught a glimpse of this beast in the bow season. He came within 70 or 80 yards of me. He was smart enough not to get within bow range that day, but I just figured sooner or later he would make that fateful mistake that would result in some new freezer filler for me. That would be the last time I would see him that year. I figured that someone else got lucky and hung him on their wall.

The following year, I caught him several times on my trail cameras. After looking at all the pictures, I came to the conclusion that this was indeed the same deer. I started to feel that maybe he was a little cocky for showing his face in a place that I have had so much success in. I decided to just bide my time and trust that I would prevail again, but turned out that was just wishful thinking. I only got to see him with

my own eyes once that year and that was only because my oldest son, Hunter, saw him one afternoon while we were getting off the ole Arctic Cat quad we use to get close to our hunting spots. He stepped off the quad and looked down the side slopes of Death Valley and said, “Dad, there’s a buck!” As I looked through the brush to see, I again laid eyes on Patience. That is not, however, what I called him as I watched him run up to the very top of Death Valley and cross the tractor path into the next section of woods. Even though that year was a very eventful season for me with all of my tags filled, I did not get the one that continued to elude me.

Year three started out the same way with trail camera shots and a glimpse or two during the archery season, but with no fatal shots fired. I was now seeing him more regularly, as I was spending more time in pursuit. I had determined that this deer was using this travel area on a daily basis by crossing in and out through the tractor path opening between the fields. I placed a trail camera at this point and ended up with many

pictures of him, but still he eluded his new home, which was my freezer! So a plan was hatched for the muzzleloader season. Opening day found me lying on my stomach in the field watching the crossing. It seemed like a sure thing until I heard something off to my right. I glanced over my shoulder and there he was standing no more than 40 yards from me watching my every move. Being a right-handed shooter, I tried to switch shoulders to get a shot. Ever try it? Well, hopefully you make out better than I did. Apparently, you can’t have your finger on the trigger when you switch the safety off. Foiled again! I never saw him again that year.

Finally the season came around again. Year four and still there was no sign of this elusive deer. That is until one brisk fall afternoon when I was hanging on the side of a tree in Death Valley. I heard some racket behind me of the sort that only a trespassing hunter could make. I turned to yell at this unsuspecting clown, but before I could even get out any words, I noticed the great headgear of the “man” that was about to get the “wrath of Kann.” His mistake was already made, fifteen yards broad side looking away from my location. And then Patience and I were up close and personal and taking some best friends forever photos. I know now what patience means and Patience now knows my freezer.

Northern Wayne Outdoor Recreation Club opens the Yamaha Trail after receiving a generous grant from Yamaha’s OHV Access Initiative!

The Northern Wayne Outdoor Recreation Club held a ribbon cutting ceremony on September 8th of this year to celebrate the grand opening of the Yamaha Trail. The branch trail connects the Vacation Inn and Arlo’s Country Store to the existing trail system. This allows visitors to access lodging, gas, and food right from their ATVs without having to trailer

their quads. Club officers hope that proper expansion of the trail system with the inclusion of additional amenities will help to increase membership and preserve OHV use of the corridor for future generations. The success of this project will also promote good trail stewardship and show the local community that OHV riders are responsible and respect the environment.

With help from Yamaha’s OHV Access Initiative this project is a part of an ongoing effort to encourage safe, responsible riding and sustainable, open riding areas in Susquehanna and Wayne counties. For more information about Yamaha’s OHV Access Initiative, go to: www.yamahaohvaccess.com.

2nd Annual Bras for a Cause Ride ReportLost Trails ATV Adventure Park – Dunmore, PA

Over 250 participants attended the second annual Bras for a Cause Ride, which took place on Sunday, September 16, 2012. The increase in attendance raised $800 more than last year, resulting in a grand total of over $2,500 for the Pink Ribbon Riders®. The Pink Ribbon Riders® is a grassroots effort and a small nonprofit organization that provides direct financial assistance to both men and women diagnosed with breast cancer.

The featured activity included finding hidden bras in the woods that you could bring back to the check-in area, allowing you to be able to claim one of the three main prizes. The first rider won a 32-inch television. The second rider won a Go Pro helmet cam, and the third rider won a helmet and gear! In addition to the donations received from admissions that day, over twenty baskets were raffled off. Additional items available for purchase were event T-shirts and baked goods, which helped to raise more for the cause. Along with North American Warhorse ATV dealership being open, vendors sporting miscellaneous items and food could also be found in the parking area.

The Lost Trails includes over 2,000 acres with a large variety of terrain to explore, including everything from wet and muddy to boulder crawls to scenic trails twisting through the wooded mountainside amid breathtaking vistas. Have you thought about putting the “Golden Rules” of ATV Safety on your club’s web site, member emails and newsletter? Or adding a link to safety information related to driving an ATV or side-by-side?

Promoting ATV safety to members and the general public is of utmost importance for all ATV clubs and associations. Thanks to hundreds of clubs holding regular ATV safety training for kids, some states are seeing a decline in the number of youth accidents and injuries. However, some are also reporting a spike in the number of adults involved in avoidable accidents, as many are buying their first ATV. Everyone, including adult members new to your club, should be educated on riding safely and responsibly.

The All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Institute® (ASI) is a not-for-profit division of the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America® (SVIA). It was formed in 1988 to implement an expanded national program of ATV safety education and awareness. ASI’s primary goal is to promote the safe and responsible use of ATVs, thereby reducing accidents and injuries that may result from improper ATV operation by the rider.

At your club’s next board meeting, consider adding the ASI “Golden Rules” to your website and other member communications: The ATV Safety Institute’s Golden Rules:

Always wear a DOT-compliant helmet, goggles, long sleeves, long pants, over-•the-ankle books, and gloves.Never ride on paved roads except to cross when done safely and permitted •by law - another vehicle could hit you. ATVs are designed to be operated off-highway.Never ride under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.•Never carry a passenger on a single-rider ATV and no more than one passenger •on an ATV specifically designed for two people.Ride an ATV that’s right for your age.•Supervise riders younger than 16; ATVs are not toys.•Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed.•Take a hands-on ATV Rider Course and the free online E-Course. The sun was bright and temperatures were in the low 70s for this fall’s drag races. The event hosted nineteen racers with thirty-four entries in five classes.

New this year was the Dead Engine Start, and all machines participated. Riders came to the starting line, turned off their engines and put their hands in the air. When the lights turned green, they started their engines and raced down the track.
