We have even less regard for kings; just ask George III whose tea we tossed into Boston Harbor. So as Catholics in America, what are we to make of this celebration of Christ the King? It helps to know where this feast comes from. We might easily assume its origins lie in the Middle Ages, when knights swore fealty to noble monarchs. Actually, it was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925, just four years before Sir Harry Andrews began building his castle in Loveland. In the wake of World War I, the Holy Father saw the collapse of Europe’s royal dynasties and the looming menace of fascism and communism. A reign of terror was about to begin: the rise of Hitler, a second world war, the concentration camps, the dictatorships of Stalin and Mao, and the impending threat of global thermonuclear war. Pope Pius XI did not necessarily foresee this whole fearful future in 1925. But he did know that people needed to be reminded that no political ideology should be allowed to rule over them because they already had a true and worthy king: Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ, naturally, is a different kind of king. His Kingdom is, therefore, a different kind of kingdom. The Kingdom of God is not a project for us to work on— cobbled together from old shoe boxes and Elmer’s glue—but a gift to be received. Jesus Christ, the Son of God come down from Heaven, establishes the Kingdom on earth; it does not arise out of this world. Yet, the Kingdom of God is ready to break forth into the world every moment of every day. Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, has the power to reign but will not use it in us or through us without our permission. Are we humble enough to allow that to happen? Or are we instead trying to build our own little kingdoms? Are we fumbling around with things, like cardboard and glue, which are passing away, when Christ comes to the threshold of our hearts to build us up with Spirit and Life? He pours out of His own Pierced Side the water and blood, the gifts of Baptism and the Holy Eucharist, by which we are cleansed from sin and made fit for the Kingdom of Heaven. “Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” We claim our place in the kingdom by responding to God’s love for us by loving our neighbor, by living the beatitudes, by doing the works of mercy. Come, Lord Jesus! Build your Kingdom here.

REFLECTING WITH THE PAROCHIAL VICAR

NOVEMBER 26, 2017CHRIST THE KING

BUILD YOUR KINGDOM HERE

In sixth grade, our major grade-level project was building a castle. My best friend Jason and I decided to work together. Needless to say, two unsupervised twelve-year-old boys did not make much progress throughout the year. Scrambling at the last minute to slap together something out of hot glue and painted cardboard did not result in our winning first prize for best castle replica.

For most of us, castles are not part of our day-to-day experience. They’re either the things of Disney fantasy or curious historical relics. Even the Loveland Castle, without running water or wi-fi, seems rather antiquated, even though it was begun in 1929. Americans don’t find much use for castles.

The Kingdom of God is not a project for us to work on—cobbled together from old shoe boxes and Elmer’s glue—but a gift to be received.

Help them and us to embrace whatever You have in mind for them. Support them in their anxieties, fears, pains, and the frustrations of their illness. Support them with the strength of the Holy Spirit. We ask this in the name of Jesus, compassionate healer of those in need of health and hope. Amen.

THIS WEEK, FROM THE ST. SUSANNA RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY...

“By focusing on the most vulnerable members of society, we strengthen the entire fabric of society to protect the rights of all.”

Archbishop William E. Lori, Chair, Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty“Solidarity at the Service of All People in the Middle East,” https://goo.gl/nAUXNQ

COMMITTED TO CHRIST, LIVING IN GRATITUDE

Thank you to all parishioners who have completed and submitted your Commitment Card to the church. As a reminder, all commitments need to be submitted to the church no later than December 10th in order to be accounted for in the final Summary Report. Please complete and submit your card to the church even if you are unable to make a change to your current level of giving. For those registered parishioners not currently supporting the church with regular offertory gifts, please consider a monthly gift to support the needs of our parish.

BAPTISM PREPARATION

St. Susanna is excited to walk with our young families preparing to celebrate the Baptism of their children. Please know we have made some changes in our preparation process to better help our parents to be “the first and best of parents” in raising their children in the Catholic Church and no longer have the preparation program every month.

Look to our parish web site, www.stsusanna.org/baptism to register and begin our exciting new process. Once the form is completed, a member of the Pastoral Staff will contact you and help discern the best options for preparing for your child’s Baptism.

The next Baptismal Preparation class is Saturday, December 2nd, at 10:00am in the St. Susanna Room.

ADVENT RECONCILIATION SERVICES

The first Advent Reconciliation Service held at St. Susanna will be at 7:00pm on Wednesday, December 6th. Another Advent Reconciliation Service will be held at the parish at 7:00pm on Tuesday, December 12th.

ST. SUSANNA YOUNG ADULTS

We have two great Young Adult events coming up. We’ll meet Monday, December 4th at 7:00pm in the St. John Bosco Room to talk Advent and what that means in a secular culture. Then on Friday, December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, we’ll meet in the St. Susanna Room at 8:15pm to watch a movie on the Mother of God. We’ll have refreshments and time for fellowship, and we’d love to have you join us!

The young adult group is for everyone age 18-39 interested in building a relationship with Christ and each other. For more information or with questions, contact Melissa Capella at [email protected] or 513-398-3821, ext 3149.

10,000 LETTERS FOR DREAMERS

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati and the St. Susanna “Our Global Family” Ministry invites you to join us in collecting 10,000 Letters for Dreamers

The US Catholic Church is deeply concerned about the plight of immigrants who were brought to the United States when they were young and who have no pathway to regularize their status. Started in 2012, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) has protected hundreds of thousands of young people from deportation. Many of these young people worship in our parishes, attend our schools, and contribute to our communities. This program is scheduled to end in March 2018.

We are joining with Roman Catholic dioceses across the State of Ohio in a campaign to generate 10,000 letters in support of immigration reform to our congressional delegates. This number represents the total number of DACA applicants approved in Ohio, including renewals.

On December 2nd and 3rd, the St. Susanna “Our Global Family” Ministry will have tables in the Gathering Space where you can sign letters to support legislative reform of immigration laws, including the passage of the DREAM Act or similar legislation. These letters will be collected and submitted to the Catholic Social Action Office who will forward them to the appropriate Congressional delegates.

For further information about DACA, please see the September Archives of www.stsusanna.org/ourglobalfamily or www.justiceforimmigrants.org. More information about the 10,000 Letters for Dreamers Campaign can be found at www.CatholicCincinnati.org/SocialAction.

Actions Matter

This amazing scene that takes up the whole of the wall of the Sistine Chapel is a reminder of the

dramatic moment of Christ’s Second Coming, when he will judge the living and the dead. The Father has given all authority to the Son (John 5:22). Michelangelo places in the upper register the symbols of Christ’s passion as a way to highlight the instruments of Christ’s victory and ours, as well as to show that it was through his loving sacri ce that he has earned the authority to judge the living and the dead.

Christ comes riding on the clouds with his Mother at his side, head turned and eyes cast down, as the days of her intercession have come to an end. Our chance to appeal to his mercy has passed. We will stand naked before him, and our actions will be the gown that dresses us for the feast of the Lamb (Matthew 22:11).

Jesus, in his mercy, wants no surprises and personally reveals the material to be covered by this nal exam. Today’s passage highlights that our charity and kindness will go a long way toward him recognizing us at the last day. Scripture even goes

[Jesus said,] “And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats” (Matthew 25:32).

Piece: The Last Judgment (detail), 1535–1541Artist: Michelangelo Location: Sistine Chapel

so far as to say that this “love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8). Those who know his love and spread it with their actions will be preparing themselves for a blessed judgment.

Jesus makes it clear that our faith will also be a theme upon which he will search our hearts. He desires not mere words but loving listening and the heeding of his will. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven” (Matthew 7:21).

This is a great source of consolation for those who love him sincerely, even if imperfectly.

—Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

For ReflectionAm I ready for that nal exam? What should I do today in order to be ready for the loving return of Jesus?
