Community planning is both process and project based. The aims are to establish action based strategic plans through direct consultation, negotiation and communication between individual members of the community.
It provides a way of involving, energising and empowering people to work together, plan for and achieve common goals.
It recognises the integral links between economic and community development and community members.
It focuses on techniques for the generation of ideas, establishment of priorities and action planning which directly involve and value the ideas and initiatives generated by individual members of the community.
The planning process is developed to:
Encourage community involvement in planning for future growth
Encourage communities to realise their potential
Revitalise business
Increase employment and enterprise opportunities The benefits for the community are:
People need to feel valued, listened to and important. The community planning process provides a forum for communication and partnership. It is designed to involve and empower people to become more actively involved in determining their future.
Community ownership and active involvement with projects helps generate strong feelings of belonging, being valued and making a difference.
Creation of strong links between groups opens channels for communication, shares the work load and promotes understanding.
Valuable feedback and input for the Shire Council is possible through greater representation.
The community of Augusta has great spirit and commitment. They have been willing to continue to update their community plans over the years. The Augusta Community Development Association has been very active in ensuring that the community of Augusta has been consulted through the community planning process and I commend ACDA for their persistence and lead role in the organisation of these events.
The 2011 Community Planning Day was once again a testament to the active involvement of the Augusta community, and the following report is documentation of the future aspirations of those who attended. I wish the action groups well in their endeavours to bring to fruition their priority projects. I know they will be ably supported by the community.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Augusta Community Resource Centre for their financial and organisational assistance, the Shire of Augusta Margaret River and the small group facilitators: Graeme Baesjou Rochelle Booth Paul Sofilas Jan White Sharon Batley Paul Gravett Georgina Thiele Geraldine Wilson Jane Manning Facilitator South West Development Commission
