The funding has made a crucial difference to our work.At our time of discovery of the FTO obesity gene wehad no funding for further work. Having the AnnualFund grant has meant that we have been able tocontinue our exciting work in this area without needingto wait for grant funding. We are very grateful todonors for their crucial support of our work.

Gifts to our Annual Fund have helped scientists to continue theirpioneering research into the obesity gene FTO. For example, the moneyhas been used to help the team define new common genetic variants that predispose individuals to being overweight or obese. e researchersare carrying on with their work on the genetics of Type 2 diabetes andobesity, offering the potential for them to develop preliminary workbefore applying to the major grant bodies for full scale funding.

Aiding medical research

e Business School was awarded funding for an assistantship concernedwith exploring and analysing the interplay of belief, embodiment, and leadership. e project will involve exploratory fieldwork withleaders to identify issues relating to spiritual and religious beliefs, physical health and well-being. e assistant will be working with a growing team of researchers and postgraduate students.

Informing the future

e Archaeology Exploration Fund was awarded a grant to allowstudents to take part in field expeditions. e Archaeology Department has established an impressive track record ofinternational research. e Fund helps to provide funding forstudent research, a unique arrangement for a British university.

Hunger impacts millions of people around theworld, but it does not have to be like thisforever. The rice blast fungus alone killsenough rice to feed millions. The scholarshiphas enabled me to join the research team atExeter who are tackling this problem. It is awonderful opportunity.

Students and staff gathered in 2008 for a ceremony to name alaboratory in honour of one of the University of Exeter's most long-standing benefactors. e Millhayes Teaching Laboratory, atthe School of Biosciences, recognises the generosity and support of an anonymous donor to the University. His invaluable supporthas sponsored postgraduate research in Medical History, RuralGeography, Chemistry, Psychology and Postgraduate Medicine.

His philanthropy is also responsible for the Millhayes ScienceScholarships. A number of students each year benefit from this long-established scholarship programme which supports

undergraduate studies in science subjects. esescholarships have helped to ensure that theUniversity consistently develops the very brightestof scientific minds, many of whom will have usedthis very laboratory during their studies.

A ceremony was held to unveil a plaque tocommemorate the naming of the laboratory, located in the Geoffrey Pope building, on theUniversity's Streatham campus. A number of

Millhayes Science Scholars attended the event, along with Head of the School of Biosciences Professor Nick Talbot and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Janice Kay.

Millhayes – a story ofphilanthropy

How gifts are making a difference

The scholarship was the deciding factor in my decision tocome to the University of Exeter. I think it is very generousfor someone to support scholarships in this way. It really doesencourage people to come to the University.

Each year the Hiles Scholarship awards £5,000 to a final year undergraduate student in support of theirstudies at the Business School. e Hiles Scholarship was generously established by Mrs Judy Hiles in memory of her husband, Geoffrey.

Mr Hiles, an Exeter alumnus, graduated as a maturestudent with an MA in Finance and Investment in 1979. e scholarship founded in his name will continueto provide much-needed support to future individualswho, like Mr Hiles, choose to undertake studies as amature student.

Anthony Wood, the recipient of the very first HilesScholarship, graduated in July 2008 having successfullyachieved a First Class Honours degree in Accounting and Finance. He said: ‘e Hiles Scholarship played a very large part in supporting me to achieve my grades, by allowing me to concentrate on my studies instead of worrying about my finances. If it had not been for Mrs Hiles’ donation I am sure that I would not haveachieved such high marks.’

How gifts are making a difference

e memory of Professor Canon Roy Porter is continuing thanksto his decision to leave a £550,000 legacy to eology, where hewas a Professor and Head of Department between 1962 and1986. From humble beginnings, he helped turn the departmentinto one of the most popular and distinguished places to studyeology in the country.

Keen to ensure that his lifelong work continued after his death,he left a legacy to his former department. In his final years, theacademic visited the department to discuss his legacy and hiswish that the teaching of Hebrew and the Old Testament shouldcontinue. To this end, part of his bequest has already been usedto bring Dr Siam Bhayro, an expert on Early Jewish Studies, from the University of Cambridge to Exeter.

An enduring legacy

My story: why I have pledged a legacyThe time I spent at Exeter was a very memorable experience – it was a great place to be. Certainly the grounding that Exetergave to me has served me very well ever since. I believe that theUniversity is a very deserving cause. I would just like to think that I might be able to play some part in helping other people to havethe same start in life that I had by making a bequest to Exeter.

John Allwood (Economics and Statistics 1973)

Alumni golf enthusiasts are supporting scholarshipsfor talented young golfers at the University. Aroundforty alumni and three golf scholars attended thethird annual golf day at the Denham Golf Club, inSeptember, 2008. e event resulted in more than£5,500 being raised towards golf scholarships. egolf day has now raised some £15,000 in the pastthree years.

Golf is a high performance sport at the University, which is committed to developing talented sportingexcellence.

Sporting excellence

We all had a great day and the fundraising for golfscholarships enables us to put something back intothe University from which we gained so much.Hopefully one of the scholarship golfers could go onto represent the country or make the pro circuit.

How gifts are making a difference

e Annual Fund telethon operates from the University and aimsto engage alumni with life at the University today. e telethonsimply couldn’t take place without the support of currentstudents who work as callers during term time. e students callto update alumni on news and events at the University, gainfeedback and to discuss the importance of the financial supportfrom those who know us best.

In the 2007/08 academic year, our team of 81 students spoke toover 6,900 alumni from all over the world who offered careeradvice, work placements and shared experiences of life at Exeterand how it has changed over the years. e telethon is a greatopportunity for current students to be able to engage with alumnifrom all walks of life and to learn about the opportunities thereare after graduation and the different paths alumni have chosento take.

e generosity of alumni and friends like you, means that in2007/08 the telethon has raised over £150,000 for the AnnualFund that will directly enhance the student experience, ourcampuses and the surrounding community.

It was a great pleasure for me to be invited back toExeter and to have the opportunity to talk to students inthis way. There is an amazing wealth of experience outthere among the alumni community and I would urgeother alumni to come back and share their experiences.I have certainly enjoyed it.

The scholarship has made a huge difference. It has allowed me to be able to buy books thatare vital for my course rather than have toborrow them from the library. It has allowedme to concentrate on my work and not haveto worry about my finances.
