Cricket Centre Openingis summer saw the official opening of the £2 million SirChristopher OndaatjeDevon Cricket Centreat the University ofExeter. e world-class indoor facilityallows cricket playersto train at all times of

the year. Former England Captain Mike Gatting OBEattended the opening of the centre in July. He says:‘It is a fantastic and wonderful facility. e centrefacilities are there for everyone in the community to use. I am sure it will be very well used.’

e centre is named after Sir Christopher Ondaatje, an Honorary Graduate of the University, in recognition of his very generous £250,000benefaction to the facility. e state-of-the-artcentre has four indoor nets, bowling machines andan indoor game space. ere is also a video analysissuite that allows players to assess their technique.

Cricketers from across the local community will beable to use the centre, as well as University cricketplayers. University of Exeter cricket scholar BeckyWilliams says: ‘I think it is a superb opportunity for cricketers in the whole community and studentshere at the University. It will allow training all theyear round.’ Meanwhile, schoolboy cricketerHarrison Folland, 15, a pupil at Blundell’s School,Tiverton, Devon, who plays for the Devon Under 15 team, adds: ‘It is a great new facility for training. It will really help cricketers like myself to improvetheir game.’

A number of alumni are supporting cricket at theUniversity. Alumnus John Wakely (Economics 1978)is helping to fund a cricket coach. Although heplayed golf for the University, he played cricket forthe Cullompton Cricket Club, as his parents hadretired to Devon. He says: ‘I played with the club for several seasons and I recognise how importantvillage cricket is for local communities. As a result, I was very pleased to see that the cricket centreserves not only the University but also the local community.’

I am delighted to support such an importantdevelopment in Devon and at the University ascricket is of great interest to me and, as anHonorary Graduate of Exeter, I am pleased tohave the opportunity to be involved.

Legacies make a difference

e academic legacy of Professor Andrew Lang (Physics 1944) is continuing thanks to his bequest to the University of Exeter.Professor Lang sadly passed away on June 30, 2008. As EmeritusProfessor of Physics at the University of Bristol, the academic had a distinguished career and pioneered studies in X-raydiffraction physics. He was an expert on crystal physics and was widely recognised for his development of the technique ofX-ray topography.

Professor Lang embarked on his academic career after he obtained a First-Class Honours degree in Physics at e University College ofthe South West of England, the predecessor to the University ofExeter, in 1944. He gained an MSc in 1947, a Cambridge PhD in1953 and went on to work in industrial research in the UK and inthe United States. In 1954 he was appointed as Assistant Professorof Physical Metallurgy at Harvard University and then moved to the University of Bristol to take up a Lectureship in Physics in 1960.Professor Lang spent the rest of his academic career at Bristol.

roughout his life he was a strong supporter of many charities, including the University of Exeter. In his will, he made a bequest to support investment in the University Library amounting to£80,000. He said the reason he wanted to support the Library was that one of the most important lessons he learnt at University was how to study alone.

Volunteeringwith impact

More alumni than ever are coming back to the University to share theirtime and expertise with students. During Widen Your Options Week inFebruary, nearly 20 alumni returned to Exeter to volunteer as careersspeakers. e alumni who participated took part in a range of activities, including talks and mock interview sessions.

Clare Pearce is the Volunteer Officer for the University’s Development andAlumni Relations Office. She is co-ordinating efforts to provide alumniwith a range of potential volunteering activities. One of the many alumniwho are now volunteering at Exeter is alumna Ruth Lovell (English 2006),who is a broadcast journalist with the BBC. Ruth is an active volunteer and has returned to Exeter on numerous occasions to share her first-handexperience of making the transition from student journalism to a career in the media.

Alumni share their talents

A new fund has been set up to help alumni whowould like to volunteer at the University. eVolunteer Support Fund will cover the travel andaccommodation expenses for alumni who returnto one of the University’s campuses to helpstudents with their careers. Donations to theAnnual Fund are being used to support the fund.
