AS WE APPROACH OUR 65TH YEAR OF SERVICE, we are pleased to report that SunCoast Blood Bank continues to grow, prosper, and save lives. And saving lives is what our mission embodies, and something that this nonprofit does each and every day without fanfare. You will learn as you read our annual report, we continue to make great strides and serve as a model for best practices in the industry.
You will see that blood usage has gone down, and SunCoast has played a major role in this development. Although it may seem contrary to our mission, reducing unnecessary transfusions is the right thing to do for our patients. A substantial cost-saving measure implemented this year, was a
change in testing facilities. Not only did this decision save money, it improved service time and greatly reduced the number of false positive test results. Overall these efforts help reduce the cost of healthcare in our community, which is a priority on many fronts.
The landscape of blood banking continues to change and shift, and SunCoast is able to adapt seamlessly as challenges are presented. Our reputation for providing the highest quality products, excellent customer service and developing innovative processes has created national recognition for our organization. As a result, SunCoast is able to invest in strategic partnerships that enhance and advance our work.
It is with gratitude to our blood and platelet donors, as well as our financial supporters, that we have been able to supply 48,436 units of blood products to the most vulnerable in our community. Thanks to you thousands of lives were saved and countless families remained intact.
We look forward to serving our community for another 65 years.
Message from our CEO & Board President

Message from the COOA LOT HAS CHANGED in the last three years for our blood center and our industry. The term or catchphrase “Patient Blood Management” at our local healthcare facilities has translated to fewer blood transfusions for patients. Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation provided the funding for the software which allowed each unit of blood to be tracked from donation to transfusion, allowing the collection of data to help determine best transfusion practices. SunCoast Blood Bank works with its hospitals to encourage the adoption of blood usage measurements resulting in improved patient outcomes. Appropriate transfusion is good for patients, and there is no substitute for blood products and blood therapies. Blood donations are responsible for countless lives saved each day in our community and across the country. While hospitals are transfusing less blood per
admitted patient on average, the need for blood products is constant. One thing that has not changed in 65 years, is our mission. Our sole purpose is to collect, test, process, match,
store, and distribute all of the blood products required to serve the hospitals and healthcare facilities in our community. SunCoast Blood Bank has always considered this our social responsibility. SunCoast Blood Bank is also focused on our economic responsibility to our community and healthcare facilities and we are committed to playing an active role in reducing the cost of healthcare. Working together with our hospitals and trade affiliations we can support initiatives and activities that drive down costs for patients, making the very best possible healthcare options more affordable for all of the those in need in our community. Thank you for helping improve patient care and outcomes, while supporting the mission of SunCoast Blood Bank
and the community blood supply. — Jason Carney, Chief Operating Officer and Transfusion Safety Officer
SUNCOAST BLOOD BANK has a strong Change Control System in place to provide instructions for planning and implementing changes in any critical part of the blood bank’s collection, manufacturing or transfusion service operations. As represented in past years, 2012-2013 was no exception to numerous changes.
In October of 2012, SunCoast began performing patient phlebotomies at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital as an ancillary service to improve the efficiency of phlebotomies, while increasing customer service to the patients.
Early 2013 saw a strategic decision to change our donor testing lab. As of March 2013, QualTex Laboratories
now performs all of our infectious disease testing, including confirmatory testing. This change addressed our concerns with a high false positive rate from the previous testing lab, decreased the turn-around time on confirmatory testing, and resulted in a substantial cost savings.
New instrumentation in our lab, a Flow Cytometer, allowed SunCoast to perform white blood cell counts by an automated means as opposed to a manual method. Flow Cytometry is more accurate and removed a degree of strain on the staffing. Funding for this technology was provided by the Charlotte P Graver Fund of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation, and Florida Cancer Specialists and Research Institute.
SunCoast received a grant from Gulf Coast Community Foundation to implement BIO-Key TruDonor™, a software program developed to capture biometric fingerprints for blood donor identification. This has impacted the registration process by making it safer and more efficient, while reducing the number of errors.
These are just a few of the changes implemented to improve the quality of the blood supply and the safety of our donors. — Robert W. Harper II, Director of Quality Assurance

SunCoast Blood Bank collected 38,223 units of
allogenic red cells and 4,186 platelets from 19,314
donors. Over the course of the year, SunCoast Blood bank supplied over 48,436
blood products to patients.
Giving Back to the CommunitySUNCOAST PRIDES ITSELF on its strong relationship with its donors, hospitals and community. Giving back is a key element to its success and what sets it apart. SunCoast believes in supporting other non-profits that enrich and support the community including Keep Sarasota County Beautiful, Animal Rescue Coalition, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Manatee County Library Foundation, Healthy Teens Coalition, and the American Heart Association. SunCoast is also proud to sponsor a scholarship program for high school seniors, who will be our next generation of donors.
Giving Back LifeYou never know when you or someone you love will need the precious gift of life. For Sarasota Police Chief, Bernadette DiPino, blood donors hold a special place in her heart: “Two weeks after my beautiful daughter was born, I started hemorrhaging to the point I had to be rushed to the hospital. I had been bleeding so much that my dad actually called my mother at home and said “I think we’re going to lose her.”
The doctors ordered blood transfusions, which saved my life. If I hadn’t had the blood, I wouldn’t be here today.
I’m grateful that someone was willing to donate the blood that saved my life. That’s why it’s really important for people to donate. You don’t know who you are saving but you’re a hero every single time you donate. You’re making a difference in somebody’s life.I don’t know who donated blood for me but I’m forever grateful and I say a prayer for them
and appreciate what they’ve done. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be around to have a beautiful daughter who is now a police officer.
Thirty-five high school seniors received a SunCoast Scholarship in 2013. To be eligible, students must donate blood three times their senior year, or volunteer their time at their school blood drives.
SunCoast donates the unused portion of Coban wrap to animal rescue and rehabilitation organizations.
SunCoast staff participated in the AHA Heart Walk, raising over $4,000 as a team.
Staff supports Keep Sarasota County Beautiful by regularly picking up litter for its Adopt-A-Road section of Osprey Ave.

ANGELJune 9, 2012, started as a day of celebration for a young couple expecting theirfirst child. When Angel and Samantha Burt arrived at the baby shower being held in their honor, they had no idea that within hours Angel would be fighting for his life. During the shower Angel collapsed, experiencing extreme respiratory distress. He was rushed by ambulance to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where his heart stopped, and he had to be resuscitated. Doctors performed emergency open heart and lung surgery to remove a blood clot, which was two feet long and started as a deep vein thrombosis in his leg. He was only 19 years old at the time. During and after surgery, Angel received 49 units of blood. While he was recovering in the cardiac step-down unit, Samantha went into labor. Nurses were able to wheel Angel to her side in time to be present for the birth of their son, Zayden. “People really have no idea when something will happen. If it wasn’t for those 49 people who donated blood, he would not be alive,” Samantha said.
THOMASPeople often ask if there is an upper age limit to donate blood, and the answeris no! Thomas is 90 years old and has been donating blood since December 2, 1949. Mr. Welsh and his wife first learned about the importance of blood donation in 1946 when she needed a blood transfusion and he had to find someone with a matching blood type who could donate blood for her. In June 2014, the couple celebrated 70 years of marriage. Thomas is among a small group of loyal donors who donate platelets every two weeks at SunCoast Blood Bank. He has given more than 60 gallons of blood and platelets over his lifetime. When asked what he would say to someone considering donating blood, he stated “Go ahead and do it. What have you got to lose? The person who needs it has so much to lose.”
CJIn 2011, 21-year-old CJ Wickersham was spear fishing with friends several miles offAnna Maria Island, when a nine-foot shark attacked him. Quick thinking and calm action by his friends saved his life. By the time CJ reached shore, where Bayflite 2 was ready and waiting, he had lost half of his blood. SunCoast supplies O negative blood to Bayflite 2, the universal donor type, which they must have on board every time they lift off. In October 2012, CJ was able to meet and thank the Bayflite 2 crew who saved his life.
