From Savannah’s Eyes Graduation is coming up soon and prom has just passed. I hope everyone had a great time and I can’t wait until graduation and summer! Speaking of prom, this past weekend my parents and I went up to my niece’s (I call her my sister) Lashaun’s house to watch her get ready for her first prom! I

was so excited for her that I think I was more excited than she was! We went to the salon to watch her get her hair and makeup done and then we went back to her house, and I helped her get dressed. Then we went back to where we were staying at Highlands Hammock campground/state park and took pictures of her and her date in the beautiful scenery of the park. She said she had a blast and she loved it! I’m so excited to go to my first prom since I had this experience!

Graduation is coming up and I’m happy for all the people who are graduating! This means that they are achievers and they have been through one door and it will now open to another. There are some people that I will miss out of the senior class like Brianna Daniels, Kendall Smallwood, and Meggan Harrington. They all have great ability and heart to get through life. I also have played sports with them like volleyball and cheerleading; plus not to mention that I’ve known them since elementary school!

Brianna Daniels, she is a great person with an amazing personality! Poor thing always would get hurt during sports, too! But she would always stick through it and tough it out no matter what happened. She is a very good player and is always a good sport! She is a great person, and I can’t wait to watch her graduate. Kendall Smallwood, gosh I love this girl! She has such spirit that will brighten your day if you see her cheer! I think she has such spunk that she could go cheer with the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders! In volleyball she was such a great captain helping everyone out and giving pointers. I’m going to miss her at school next year! Meggan Harrington is a super sweet girl and someone you can count on! I also played sports with her and she always had a smile on her face and she was very perseverant. She also is really smart; she helps me with math if I need help. She is also a great cheerleader, too. And I know Meggan is going to have a big smile on her face that matches her big heart!

I wish all three of you the best in life, and I am going to miss you next school year. I hope you follow your dreams and stay true. You are beautiful and always believe in yourself no matter what! Whatever you choose to do, just go for it! I love you!!

Can’t wait till summer and graduation!

RETIRING TEACHERS

Mr. Louis Grossi Mr. Lou Grossi has been a teacher for 36 years, the past eight here at EVG. He taught our secondary students Science and TV Production, as well as Middle School social studies. Mr. Grossi does not have a favorite memory of being here at EVG, but he says he most appreciates “The closeness of the community. After a while you get to feel that you are part of the community. You feel accepted as a member of the small community of Everglades. Having the same students year after year you know the parents and they

know you. You many times know their whole family. At this time in my career this has meant quite a bit to me. I believe it was a good fit for me teaching in this type of community as opposed to a large school in Naples center. I have had a good time teaching here and have enjoyed the relationships with the students and parents and community.”

Mr. Grossi plans to retire from teaching. “If something comes up that is completely different than teaching and I think I may have fun doing it, I might give it a try. I have had fun teaching, especially here and would not want to take on a job that I did not think was fun.”

He does not really have any future plans. He says, “I guess that is the whole idea of retirement, you don’t have to do anything or plan your days. You get up and do whatever you want.”

Mr. Grossi, thank you for being a part of our school. We will certainly miss you and hope that you will enjoy your retirement.

Mr. Julio de la Rosa Mr. de la Rosa has been a teacher for 33 years and spent the last five here at Everglades City School. He taught Social Studies and Spanish to our high school students. His favorite memory of EVG is his interview with Bobby Jones, and taking the van with the freshmen to Havana Café for lunch as an FCAT reward (those freshmen are our 2012 seniors!).

Mr. de la Rosa is retiring from CCPS and looks forward to walking his granddaughter to school every morning and working around the house and property.

We thank you, Mr. de la Rosa, for your dedication to our students. We will miss you and wish you well!

Florida Tales “Listen, Look and

Stop… ” by Chester Keene

You see a lot of things when you’re not on a busy hi-way keeping focused on the traffic but on the side just observing. U.S.41 is one of those roads, it comes down from the north and turns east towards Miami and points out in the Everglades. It's called the Tamiami Trail.

Sitting watching traffic after shaking doors in the downtown and business district, you find yourself at 4 corners in Naples. The Bars and Lounges have

closed and the streets are deserted, you hear and see some strange things. Motorist will do a lot of things to not be stranded out in the Glades with the Mosquitos and whatever else. I have watched cars come through being towed with a 3 ft. rope at high speeds, one fellow even drove on a flat tire rim. One time I thought, what I heard was an Airplane running up because the Airport was just outside town. It got louder and louder, finally I could see it coming across the Bay Bridge at Gordon River. It was a pick-up truck being pushed by an Airboat on a trailer. The driver of the truck said his truck was out of gas, and they had been frog hunting out east and was trying to make it to the Gas station. The one on the airboat was the throttle man. The best, I guess was I saw this car swerving from one side of the road to the other. I thought, this had to be the drunkest driver I have ever seen. He wasn't even going slow. Now we didn't have Cell Phones or Texting then. I stopped him and asked him to please step out of the car. He said "I could have made it if you hadn't stopped me". I asked "Made what"? He replied "the gas station up there, this is a trick they use in NASCAR to push the fuel from the gas tank up to the fuel pump so they can get to Pit Row"? I said" wait here" and I went to the gas station and got him a gallon of gas. You gotta love them for trying.

GLADES DAZE by the ENP Gulf Coast Park Rangers

Purple Gallinule This issue we are going to take a break from the saltier ecosystems of the Ten Thousand Islands and move to a freshwater slough, home to the purple gallinule. This bird is a spectacular species that builds floating nests on dense platforms of vegetation and lives in family groups of up to 14. Its diet includes a wide variety of options such as seeds, fruits, small invertebrates. Shockingly brilliant feathers, a vivid red and yellow bill, long yellow legs ending in enormous bright yellow feet

make this bird quite easy to recognize and a delight to observe. Though easy to identify, it can be difficult to catch a glimpse of it as it tiptoes its way across lily pads and weaves through the tall grasses and vegetation of the slough.

While the purple gallinule does prefer to utilize those gorgeous legs and toes to walk rather than fly but that by no means is an indication of its strength in flight. It has relatively long wings and though it may appear awkward in flight, it is quite a proficient flyer. It has been seen as far north as Canada, and has even been known to show up in Europe and South Africa. So where can you spot this beautiful bird? Lucky for us the purple gallinule is a year round resident of Florida. Grab your binoculars and camera and take a day trip to Shark Valley, just an hour east of the Gulf Coast Visitor Center on the Tamiami Trail / US-41! Shark Valley is in the heart of the Shark River Slough, a fantastic location for viewing the traditional “river of grass”, a wide variety of bird species, alligators, turtles, and other species that call it their home.

June Fishing Report by Captain Bill Lindsay

For me fishing starts to slow down as a fishing guide. May produced a lot of big Tarpon for my customers. I like to fish with close friends at this time of year. Usually, we go out early in the morning and come

in before it gets too hot. The fishing can be great for all of our big three (Tarpon, Snook and Reds). Triple Tail fishing can be very good because the stone crab traps have been pulled and they tend to move closer to shore, rather than floating next to a crab pot line. Another way to enjoy this time of year is to drift down the rivers and passes casting jigs along the banks on the falling tide. This can produce a mixed catch of Snook, Tarpon, and Trout. Offshore Cobia fishing is good on the shallow Gulf wrecks. Grouper fishing seems to improve during the hot summer months so as you can see fishing in June can be a lot of fun. Good luck and tight lines.

Capt. Bill Lindsay lives in Chokoloskee (695-0314) and has been fishing in the Everglades National Park for over 33 years. In 1992 he was Master Angler of the MET Tournament.

Unless Congress enacts new legislation or extends The Bush tax cuts, they will expire in 2013. Federal gift and estate tax rates are 35% and expected to rise to 55%. The federal gift and estate tax exemption equivalent amount in 2012 is $5.12 million and may decrease to $1 million in 2013.

The federal annual gift tax exclusion is $13,000 in 2012. Married couples may gift up to $26,000 free of federal gift tax to an unlimited number of beneficiaries.

All we know about federal estate tax law is that we don’t know what the future holds. Understanding possibilities and planning accordingly may help minimize the tax bite for your heirs and ensure that your wishes are fulfilled.

Everglades Mink

(Mustela vison evergladensis) Other names: Mink, American Mink / Status: FL = threatened, IUCN = LC / Length: 17-24 in. (43-61 cm) / Height: n/a / Weight: 1.32-2.2 lb (.59-1 kg) / Life span: to 10 years / Breeds: in midwinter, with the kits born in the spring / Found: Collier County, near coast, mainland / Months found: JfmamjJASOND (lower case indicates breeding season).

The mink is a member of a larger family of weasels and polecats (Mustela), which contains 16 different species worldwide. Only two of these species are mink: the American mink and the European mink. The Everglades mink is a subspecies and is the only mink found in southern Florida; two different subspecies inhabit the northern tier of the state.

The mink population in Southwest Florida today is limited to Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, and the Fakahatchee Strand in Collier County. Historically, this relative of the ferret could be found as far north as Lake Okeechobee, but agricultural development has reduced its range to the very southern tip of the state. Seeing an Everglades mink in the wild is nearly impossible. Quick, solitary, and secretive, this small carnivore is rare to witness even in areas where it is more common, such as Canada and the northern Midwest.

The mink was once trapped and hunted to the point of eradication throughout much of its range, in pursuit of its prized fur, but today almost all mink stoles and coats are fashioned out of farm-raised animals. Although this practice is controversial, as is the wearing of any fur products, mink farming has helped reduce the pressure on wild harvesting and allowed the mink to regain some of its former range. It can now be found throughout the eastern U.S., across all of Canada all the way to Newfoundland, and in Alaska.

The mink is a strict carnivore. Its razor-sharp teeth and incredible speed make it a formidable predator. Semi-aquatic, it feeds primarily in freshwater streams, lakes, and ponds where it catches crayfish, small fish, and frogs. On land it is capable of killing animals much larger than itself and has been known to prey on rabbits, ducks, rice rats, birds, mice, and voles. It in turn is taken by coyotes, great horned owls, and foxes.

FWC News A 12-week old Florida panther kitten was recently

transferred to Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. More than a third of panther deaths documented last year were the result of vehicle strikes. Drivers should drive carefully in rural areas where panthers are known to live. For more information on Florida panthers, go to www.FloridaPantherNet.org.
