Welcome to Resurrection!

W e extend a warm welcome to each one present. As we unite together in worship, may we

experience together the grace and mercy of our God through his life-giving Word and sacraments. Guests, below is some information that may help us host you well in the Lord’s house. Please let us know if we can assist you in any way. Visitor Information

W orship at Resurrection Lutheran Church follows the historic liturgy of the Church. Our worship

service is designed to give our Savior thanks for the salvation He won for us. Lutheran worship is really a conversation between God and his people. He speaks to us in His Word; we praise Him and respond to Him in song. We confess our sins and needs; He provides the forgiveness Jesus accomplished at the cross, and helps us with our individual needs.

W orship will follow the service folder, guiding us in our dialogue with the Lord. Feel free to participate at whatever level you are comfortable. Where indicated you will

find some of the hymns and psalms in the Christian Worship hymnal (the red book under your chair.) Whenever the words are printed in bold, the congregation is welcome to join in responding or singing. May God bless us as we place Him at the center of our worship.

Bathrooms: Down the main hall, across from the drinking fountains.

Child's Room: The room located at the rear of the church serves as a cry room or nursing room (with rocker). The door is located in the gathering area.

Children’s Bulletin: special bulletins designed for young children are available.

Leader: Pastor Nathan Strutz and Vicar Eric Melso Pianist: Terri Krueger

Please visit the prayer section of the website and let our prayer team go to work for you. We all have struggles in life that can use a little extra prayer and your friends in Christ are ready and willing to be there for you.

Strengthening the bonds of fellowship

2015/10/06/in Together

It’s easy to forget that our synod is a part of a larger fellowship of confessional church bodies around the world. The recent meeting of the synod’s Commission on Inter-Church Relations (CICR) is a clear reminder of our close ties with those church bodies and what a blessing God-given unity is.

The CICR works to maintain those close relationships through continuing contact and communication with our sister synods. Annual discussions take place between the CICR and the doctrine committee of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS). These discussions are intended to strengthen the fellowship relations between the two synods and to address issues of mutual concern.

Individual members of the CICR are assigned as the primary contacts with Lutheran church bodies around the world. Through written communications and personal visits, the contact men offer encouragement and advice. They also bring regular reports to the CICR of the blessings and challenges faced by our overseas brothers and sisters in places like Scandinavia, Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa, and Latin America. The CICR is also responsible for overseeing appropriate contact with other Lutheran church bodies not in our fellowship. The formal doctrinal discussions currently being held between WELS, ELS, and the Church of the Lutheran Confession (CLC) are taking place under the supervision of the CICR. At its meeting last week, the CICR reviewed the pro-gress of those discussions and offered feedback to the committee conducting the talks. Re-ports of the informal doctrinal discussions with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod are also reviewed.

Please remember the work of the CICR in your prayers. Please also pray for the Lutheran church bodies around the world that share in our commitment to God’s Word and are partners in our God-given mission.

Serving in Christ, President Mark Schroeder

Resurrection Lutheran Clothing Closet As you may be aware, a few years ago, our church started a clothing "closet" stocked with gently used clothing for families in need. Because we have had very little need for adult and maternity clothing and because of a current space issue, the Deegan's are only keeping children's clothing for now (this includes young adults/teens). When Becky becomes aware of a need that she cannot fill, members will be notified via email of specific sizes, etc. Your quick response and assistance are always appreciated. And, as always, if you know of a family who needs free clothing for their children, please call Becky Deegan (576-5252). Thank you for sharing your blessings with others in need!

May we pray for you? 2015/10/06/in Newsletter, WELS Nurses news

By Debbie Miller, RN, Corvallis, Oregon, Trinity Lutheran Church – Eugene, OR

The WELSNA website has a wonderful prayer request feature. You may ask…what is that? We are a team of nurses who are willing to assist people with their prayers at home. This is all done by e-mail – simply send a request through the website, www.welsnurses.net under the Contact Us feature found on the home page and the prayer team goes to work, keeping all things confidential, of course. That’s it!

I am reminded of a prayer acronym that I recently learned to assist me in my own prayer life. ACTS.

A stands for adoration (basically, tell God how awesome he is)

C stands for confession. The Bible tells us we need to confess our sins to our Lord and Savior and ask for forgiveness on a daily basis.

T stands for thanksgiving – we need to daily thank God for all of our many blessings.

S stands for supplication (a fancy word for petition, which means to ask God for anything you may want or need.)

Mark 11:24 tells us “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” God may answer our prayers with a yes, no, or not now, but he hears all of our prayers and has a perfect plan already in place!

Leader: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen. CONFESSION OF SINS Leader: Beloved in the Lord; let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

All: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie People: Leader: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of

the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

Announcements & Upcoming Events

New Member Welcome On Sunday, October 25th, Chris and Corrine Weismueller and sons Andrew, Adam and Bennett were welcomed to RLC family by transfer. Please stop and welcome them! Join us for the Congregational Meeting, Sunday, October 25th, 10:30AM The next Congregational Meeting will be held in the sanctuary on October 25th, after the worship service. All are welcome to attend. Special Service: A Mighty Fortress Sunday, November 1 and Thursday, October 29 we will once again celebrate the Reformation, the reform God brought back to the church on earth by reclaiming the Bible's main teaching: we are saved only by God's undeserved love, not our own good works.

One of the rallying hymns for the Reformation is A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. One could see a fortress as a safe place to hide for protection. That's true, but our services will also show us that a fortress is a place to invite others to find their protection and rest in Jesus. So the fortress is a place for inviting, not just hiding.

Following each of those services, there will be a special, one-time Bible study reviewing the blessings God has shown our congregation in the past year and inviting our commit-ments of time, talent and treasure to be part of those blessings in the coming year.

Sign up today for Germanfest!

On Sunday, November 1st, a Vine and Branches group will be hosting this year’s Germanfest after the bible study that Sunday.

They will provide the meat and beer, please bring side dishes for the meal.

Please sign up today so they will know how many will attend. We’ll see you then!!

Advent by Candlelight - December 6th Advent by Candlelight will come sooner than you think! Advent by Candlelight is a special night; a night to prepare ourselves for the busy Christmas season and set our mindset and priorities to the best gift ever given, God's own Son, Jesus, our Savior from sin. This year's theme will be Hark the Glad Sound. The date is set for December 6th, at 6:30pm. Think of someone you could invite, and join us for a night of fellowship, devotions, and songs. You won't want to miss it.

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON: 2 CHRONICLES 26:16-23 NIV

16 But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God, and entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense. 17 Azariah the priest with eighty other courageous priests of the LORD followed him in. 18 They confronted King Uzziah and said, “It is not right for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the LORD. That is for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, who have been consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have been unfaithful; and you will not be honored by the LORD God.”

19 Uzziah, who had a censer in his hand ready to burn incense, became angry. While he was raging at the priests in their presence before the incense altar in the LORD’s temple, leprosy

broke out on his forehead. 20 When Azariah the chief priest and all the other priests looked at him, they saw that he had leprosy on his forehead, so they hurried him out. Indeed, he himself was eager to leave, because the LORD had afflicted him.

21 King Uzziah had leprosy until the day he died. He lived in a separate house—leprous, and banned from the temple of the LORD. Jotham his son had charge of the palace and governed the people of the land.

22 The other events of Uzziah’s reign, from beginning to end, are recorded by the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. 23 Uzziah rested with his ancestors and was buried near them in a cem-etery that belonged to the kings, for people said, “He had leprosy.” And Jotham his son succeeded him as king.

PSALM 22

All: Refrain

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?* Why are you so far from saving me?

I am a worm and not a man,* scorned by men and despised by the people.

All who see me mock me;* they hurl insults, shaking their heads:

“He trusts in the LORD; let the LORD rescue him.* Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.” Refrain

My strength is dried up, and my tongue sticks

to the roof of my mouth;* you lay me in the dust of death.

A band of evil men has encircled me,* they have pierced my hands and my feet.

They divide my garments among them* and cast lots for my clothing.

But you, O LORD, be not far off;* O my Strength, come quickly to help me.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain

Please be seated ON COMMUNING

Non-alcoholic wine is available for those who desire it. The non-alcoholic wine is white.

The Bible teaches that communing together signifies a oneness in faith, life and worship (1 Cor. 10:16-17). Reception of the Lord's Supper by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist and for which we must all pray. It would be unloving of us as a congregation to invite visitors to the Lord’s table. We would not be so presumptuous as to make any visitor take a stand with our doctrine and practice without first providing opportunity to explore the Bible's teachings with them.(1 Cor. 11:27-29). Our pastor would be happy to explore this unity with you, on the basis of God's Word, so that you might commune with us in the future.

SECOND LESSON: 1 CORINTHIANS 9:19-23 NIV

Paul’s Use of His Freedom 19 Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. VERSE OF THE DAY

GOSPEL LESSON AND SERMON TEXT: MARK 9:35-45 NIV

Leader: The Gospel according to, Mark chapter 9.

People: The Request of James and John 35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”

38 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”

39 “We can,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”

41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John.42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Leader: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them up to the Lord.

Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

People: It is good and right so to do.

Leader: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who promised that wherever two or three come together in his name, there he is with them to shepherd his flock till he comes again in glory.

Therefore with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Sanctus

SUNDAY SCHOOL CHOIR

“Prayer”

Our Father who in heaven dwells, most holy is your name,

your kingdom come, your will be done in heav’n and earth the same.

Give us today our daily bread, our hunger so to feed, and when we stray, forgive us Lord, as we would those in need.

Away from temptation, oh, lead us we pray,

and from the world’s evil, protect us, Lord, from day to day.

For you are God above all gods; your kingdom knows no end; your pow’r and glory shall prevail forevermore, forevermore, amen.

Page 11

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen. Please be seated HYMN OF THE DAY: 181 “Come, Oh, Come, Life-Giving Spirit” (in the red book under your chair)

SERMON BASED ON: MARK 10:35-45

Be Ambitious to Serve

Questions to consider while hearing the sermon:

1. What's the definition of ambition? 2. Why did James and John want to sit on Jesus' right and left? 3. What cup is Jesus referring to? What baptism is he referring to? 4. How does ambition often turn selfish? 5. When does ambition to serve become misguided? 6. In what ways was Jesus ambitious to serve you? 7. What did the Gentile rulers do to prove their greatness? 8. What's the comforting fact Jesus tells his disciples? 9. What motivates us to serve others? 10. How do our acts of service to others bring blessings to us? For further discussion

How is service sometimes used as a disguise for selfish ambition? Why did Jesus state it as a fact that his followers are different from those rulers of the world? Jesus came to give his life as a ransom. Discuss what that means. Share a time that your service to someone resulted in you getting more back than what you gave.

MEMBERSHIP WELCOME Chris and Corrine Weismueller and sons Andrew, Adam and Bennett

Leader: Dear Friends in Christ, The Weismueller family have requested to become members of Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church by transfer from a congregation within our fellowship. They are truly convinced that the Word is taught in its truth and purity and that the Sacraments are administered according to their institution by Christ in this church.

At this time I would like to introduce you to your church family and offer you the right hand of fellowship and love, acknowledging you as members of Resurrection Lutheran Church. You are invited to join us in the reception of the Lord’s Supper and to participate in all the other blessings of salvation, which God has given to his Church, in the name of the Father and of the Son

and of the Holy Spirit.

Dear Members of Resurrection, Chris, Corrine, Andrew, Adam and Bennett have come before you and the pastor of this congregation and now have been publicly received as members of Resurrection Lutheran Church. May the God of all grace, preserve and strengthen the Meismueller family in the true faith that they may remain stead fast in the Gospel until the end and receive the crown of eternal life. Welcome them as your brothers and sister in Christ.

Their sponsors, Ken and Kathleen Harwood have volunteered to help them stay close to Jesus, to stay in contact with Jesus’ Word, to help them to connect with Jesus’ people here at Resurrection and to help them find ways to use their gifts in service to Christ and his body.

Leader: Ken and Kathleen do you promise to carry out these roles according to the strength Christ gives? If so answer, yes, and I ask God to help me. K & K: Yes, and I ask God to help me.
