ROLES & FUNCTIONS

OF EDUCATIONAL

TECHNOLOGY IN 21ST CENTURY

Page 2: ROLES AND FUNCTIONS OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY IN 21ST CENTURY

Here we are to talk about technology and the role it plays in 21st century education . Technology is by far the most popular topic concerning 21st century learning and education and many of the videos on Youtube are about just that. Although some of these videos cover other ideas, technology still seems to be the central focus. So the purpose of this article is two-fold: One is to address some of the misconceptions out there about technology and also is about how to implement technology effectively and use in practical pragmatic way.

Page 3: ROLES AND FUNCTIONS OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY IN 21ST CENTURY

So let’s get the negatives out of the way first. Firstly I would make this point very clear that technology is not the solution to 21st century education, technology is simply a tool to aid education and learning, also technology should not be told as a separate schools subject, but as a tool, technology should be used in all classrooms. Any learning concerning technology should be based around the theme and objectives of the class. The place of technology in pedagogy is based on various factors and questions of effectiveness, time saving, increased outcomes etc.

When schools cut corners in terms of spending on technology the result of this is that the things that they do buy are already outdated before they have bought them. For technology to be relevant, constant investment has to be made in that technology, its replacement and updating. I think that any investment in technology has to be made very consciously of the reasons why and how it's going to be implemented within the school, otherwise its money down the drain. Here is where role of edtech professionals comes into play.

SLIDE PROJECTOR • Is an opto-mechanical device for showing photographic slides.

• A 35 mm slide projectors, direct descendants of the larger-format magic lantern, first came into widespread use during the 1950s as a form of occasional home entertainment, family members and friends would gather to view slide shows, which typically consisted of chrome slides snapped during vacations and family events.

Slide projectors were also widely used in educational and other instructional settings.

Photographic film slides and projectors have mostly been replaced by image files on digital storage media shown on a projection screen by using a video projector or simply displayed on a large-screen video monitor.

HOW DOES A SLIDE PROJECTOR WORK?

Slide projectors work by shining light through specialized photographs called slides. When the light goes through the slide, it enlarges the photograph and displays the image on a screen or on the wall. Usually, slide projectors use a carousel or magazine to hold many different slides. When a button is pushed, the slides advance in consecutive fashion.

Inside the body of the slide projector, there are several lenses and mirrors. The slide projector relies on these lenses and mirrors to project roughly parallel rays of light through the slide. On the other side of the slide, a lens spreads the light rays back out, which enlarges the image. Typically, slide projectors feature an adjustable lens so that the operator can bring the image into sharp focus. The farther away the slide projector is from the screen or blank wall, the larger the image will appear to be. Conversely, if the slide projector is placed close to the screen, the image will not be large.

Modern slide projectors are digital devices. Instead of shining light through a slide, the image comes from a computer that is hooked up to a projector. In contrast to analog slide projectors, digital projectors are controlled via the computer.

HISTORY OF SLIDE PROJECTOR

Used by amateurs and professionals alike, slide projectors illuminate and enlarge images on film slides for viewing on a flat surface. Most popular in the mid-twentieth century, the use of slide projectors declined with the advent of digital photography.

MAGIC LANTERN PROJECTORS

First used by 17th century scientists, Magic Lanterns functioned similarly to the slide projectors used today. Fire illuminated images painted on heavy glass slides and projected them onto a flat surfaces, likes walls or pieces of fabric.

EARLY ELECTRIC SLIDE PROJECTORS

Electric slide projectors gradually replaced Magic Lanterns in the early 20th century. The Kodaslide projector model, introduced in 1939, displayed individual color Kodachrome film slides placed manually into the projector, one by one.

CAROUSEL SLIDE PROJECTORS

Louis Misurace created the Carousel slide projector in the 1950s, before selling the invention to the Kodak company. The Carousel's rotating design could hold dozens of slides at a time and automatically project them sequentially.

SLIDE PROJECTOR ADVANCEMENT

As the popularity of Carousel projectors surged in the 1960s and 70s, Kodak expanded the size of its regular projectors, allowing them to hold up to 140 slides at once. The company also introduced a "pocket" Carousel model designed for miniature slides.

SLIDE PROJECTORS DISCONTINUED

As digital photography usurped film in the 1990s and 2000s, slide projectors fell out of common use. Kodak discontinued the production of its projectors in 2004.
