What is Rotary International?

Rotary Year 2012-13

Rotary International is the oldest organization of social service clubs in the world; created in Chicago in 1905, today it includes nearly 30,000 clubs in more than 180 countries. Rotary is headquartered in Evanston, Illinois in the United States.

Rotary is a non-governmental, non-political, non-religious organization whose members are dedicated to understanding the needs of people and, more importantly, mobilizing resources to help those in need.

Rotary Clubs unite business people and professionals to promote friendship and help communities at the local and international levels. Members are called Rotarians.

The Rotary Motto, “Service Above Self,” reflects the spirit of its 1.2 million members around the world, who also strive to meet the highest ethical standards in all professions. Membership is open to men and women.

Rotary International in Poland

10/15/2012 Rotary Year 2012-13

In 1930, the first Rotary Club was established in Warsaw. During World War II, Rotary International withdrew the membership charters of Polish clubs. After an absence of 50 years, Rotary returned to Poland in 1989.

The Warsaw-Wilanow Rotary Club (RCWW) was established in April, 1995. We are part of District 2230, which consists of all Rotary Clubs in Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus.

Our membership currently consists of approximately 26 prominent bankers, businessmen, foreign diplomats, and other professionals, representing almost a dozen nationalities, especially Poland.

How Do We Put “Service Above Self?”

10/15/2012 Rotary Year 2012-13

Our club supports a variety of charitable programs and activities. Many times we work jointly with other Rotary Clubs in Poland or in other countries so that we can pool our resources more effectively.

In addition, our club donates regularly to the US-based Rotary Foundation, which has been in the forefront of global efforts to eradicate polio since 1986 – the PolioPlus Campaign.

Since our club’s establishment in 1995, we have contributed over one million Polish zlotys to various initiatives that assist the disadvantaged in three broad categories:

-- Underprivileged children;

-- Health care; and

-- Community development.

Current Club Organization

10/15/2012 Rotary Year 2012-13

Principal officers include the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and President-Elect, all of whom are elected and serve during the Rotary Year that begins 1 July and ends 30 June the following year.

All elected officials have specific functions that support the President; however, the President is ultimately responsible for the success or failure of the Club.

In addition, four appointed members serve as the directors of International Service, Domestic Service, Club Operations, and Membership committees. The President-Elect nominally supervises the four directors. Individual Club Members serve on one or more of these committees.

Ongoing Program Activities

10/15/2012 Rotary Year 2012-13

Annual Charter Night Ball, usually held in March, is the Club’s most important social and fundraising event. Generally, funds raised during this event are earmarked for a specific charity or needy organization.

But fundraising, along with support for a variety of worthy causes, occurs throughout the year, as evidenced by the specific projects that the Club supports (outlined in subsequent slides).

Whenever possible, RCWW tries to pool its financial resources with other Rotary Clubs, as well as work with our locally-affiliated Rotaract Club.
