Dear Rye Brook Resident: As the new school year is upon us, a new recreation season is as well. I hope this brochure finds you well and that your summer has recharged your recreation batteries. I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to experience recreation’s wide ranging activities for all ages. Popular recreation programs include floor hock-ey, teen center, ice skating, bowling, men’s basketball and many other recrea-tional activities to fit into your fall schedule. Halloween in the Park in scheduled for Saturday, October 18th and 19th begin-ning at 6:00pm at Rye Hills Park. Parking for the event will be at Crawford Park. There will be a haunted trail set up within the Park. Participants will go through the trail and the 1st 100 children will receive goodie bags after the trail. Come join us for what we expect to be a can’t miss attraction. There will be a nominal fee charge this year of $2 per person. In memory of Paula Bertolacci, the fourth annual “Paula’s Pals” Coat Drive will take place from September 23rd to December 13th to collect clean reusable coats for the needy. These coats will be distributed to the Carver Center and Holy Rosary Church where they will be provided to our local needy neighbors. Paula’s goal before passing in January, two years ago, was to donate 150 coats to the needy. We hope to meet this goal again this year. Collection boxes will be located at the Rye Brook Recreation Department, Anthony J. Posillipo Center, Port Chester Middle School, Park Avenue School, as well as Corpus Christi Church. The basketball courts at Rye Hills Park will be resurfaced with new basketball hoops installed during the month of August and be ready for use by mid-September. On line registration will begin on Tuesday, September 10th at 9:30pm. Registration will be accepted for Mid-Day Kinderplay starting August 12th. I look forward to seeing you at some of our programs and hope that Rye Brook Recreation is meeting your recreational needs. Robert Bertolacci Parks & Recreation Superintendent

RYE BROOK RECREATION DEPARTMENT PARENTAL RULES OF CONDUCT

Parental Game Day Behavior

Parents must be encouraging, supportive and affirmative in regard to their child’s play on and off the field. Parents must be encouraging, supportive and affirmative in regard to other children’s play on and off the field (including children on teams playing against their child).

Parents must respect the integrity and judgment of sports officials. Parents must refrain from coaching and/or officiating from the stands. Parents who coach from the stands confuse players and often undermine what the coach and players are trying to achieve on the field. Parents who officiate from the stands undermine efforts to promote proper ideals of sportsman-ship.

Parents should become familiar with the rules of the game. Parents should not gather in or near the bench or dugout area or otherwise interfere with the Coach while performing his or her duties. Parents may not step onto the playing field for any reason during a practice or game, except when in-vited to do so by the Head Coach in the case of an injury to their child. Parents shall show good sportsmanship in all respects and remember that the opposing players are also young children who are learning sportsmanship and skills as well. Parents shall not be abusive in any way to players opposing their child’s team and shall not use any equipment to increase the volume of their voice on the sidelines, including any microphones or mega-phones. All cheering should be positive and appropriately subdued – remember, for every child who succeeds, there may be a disappointed child on the other team.

Parental/Coach Communications Parents are encouraged to communicate with the Head Coach of their child’s team but only in the fol-lowing manner: Parents cannot communicate with the Head Coach of their child’s team immediately before or during a game or practice, except to convey factual information regarding a child’s attendance or similar lo-gistical information relating to that game or future practices or games such as transportation arrange-ments, absences, availability, etc. Absolutely no communication regarding any prior events (particularly grievances) may be made at such time. If an issue arises that requires communication, parents must wait at least 24 hours after a game/practice before communicating with the Head Coach and should think carefully during this time about what they want to say and how it is likely to be received by a volunteer who is trying to weigh the needs of all of his/her players to do what is best for the team. All communication with the Head Coach shall be in a civil tone and using appropriate language, show-ing the appropriate level of respect and taking into account that this coach is a volunteer who has been selected by the Recreation Department to act as an authority figure for your child. The types of issues that should be discussed between parents and coaches are the treatment of their child (mentally and physically), ways to help their child improve and concerns about their child’s be-havior.

7

child’s playing time. In connection with all teams, travel or rec, it is inappropriate for a parent to dis-cuss team strategy and/or play calling, positioning or placement in batting order, etc. (unless the writ-ten rules of the related league have requirements regarding such issues which the parent reasonably believes have not been adhered to) and any issues regarding any other children on the team, unless those issues relate to the safety and physical or mental well-being of your child. Email communications between parents and coaches must be limited to communications involving scheduling, attendance at future games, and responses to coaches’ Emails regarding similar topics. Under no circumstances are grievances between parents and coaches to be aired via Email – these con-versations should occur in person or via telephone. All such conversations should be limited to the par-ent involved and the coach and should in no event be undertaken in a location where the affected child or children are present. All such conversations must remain civil in both tone and choice of language. Parents should keep in mind that the purpose of athletics is for the benefit of the children and to teach them sportsmanship and skills. Travel teams may have slightly different goals and philosophies from rec teams and parents should be sure to understand these goals and philosophies, as well as the specific rules by which the team is governed, prior to having their child participate so as to avoid possible sub-sequent conflicts with the coaches. Parents who violate the above rules will be subject to suspension and/or banishment from practices and/or games.

Chain of Communications Parents must first communicate with their child’s Head Coach. If issues remain after a good faith effort to resolve the dispute, parents must communicate in person or by telephone with the Superintendent of Parks and Recreation. If necessary, a meeting will be sched-uled between the parents and the Superintendent of Parks and Recreation.

Violations of Parental Game Day Behavior and/or Parental /Coach Communications Parents who violate the above rules will be subject to sanctions, including suspension from viewing games, banishment from viewing games and, ultimately the suspension or banishment of their child from participation from in Rye Brook Village Parks and Recreation run or sponsored sporting events.

Parties to Whom These Rules Are Applicable The term “Parent” as used in these rules, shall be applicable to any parent or other person act-ing as the adult supervisor of a child playing on a team under the supervision of the Rye Brook Recrea-tion Department and will include, without limitation, step-parents, grandparents, legal guardians, oth-er adult relatives and family friends who may be in attendance at games or practices or who otherwise may be in a supervisory capacity for any participating child. By allowing a child to participate in ac-tivities sponsored by the Rye Brook Recreation Department, each parent agrees that he or she, the oth-er parent, and any other guardians, relatives or other adult supervisors who accompany their children to any games or practices will be bound by the rules provided herein. Parents are also expected to en-sure that their other children in attendance at games or practices will abide by these rules as well. The undersigned parents hereby acknowledge that they have read and understand the Parental Rules of Conduct set forth above and agree to be bound by them. No child will be permitted to participate in any activities sanctioned by the Rye Brook Recreation Department unless BOTH parents have signed this form, filled in the date, and returned it to the Recreation Office. __________________________________ ________________________________ Signature of Parent Signature of Parent Print Name:_______________________ Print Name:______________________
