Visitors

Welcome to historic St. Rose of Lima Catholic

Church! Built over a century ago, we all owe a debt of

gratitude to the Irish faithful who were the first to call

this church their parish. For apart from the countless

sacrifices made by that first generation of faithful to

build a suitable house of prayer and divine worship for

the greater glory of God, this beautiful church would

not exist.

Many of the beautiful stained glass windows, perhaps

the most stunning feature of the church, have been

newly restored. Rendered in the Munich Pictorial

style, they depict scenes from the life of Christ as well

as images of various angels and saints. By the end of

this year, we hope to complete this restoration project.

The careful observer will discern elements from the

Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine styles which

together make up the style known as Venetian Gothic.

When the church was entrusted to the care of the

priests of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter in 2008,

the sanctuary was renovated and restored for the

celebration of the usus antiquior (more ancient usage)

of the Roman rite. Bishop Paprocki consecrated the

new main and side altars in 2012 and established the

church as a personal parish on New Years Day, 2014.

After both Sunday Masses, visitors are invited to meet

and greet some of our parishioners in the parish hall

and socialize over coffee and donuts. If interested in

joining the parish, simply call the office.

From the Pastor’s Desk Second Sunday of Advent Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy

What Is a Jubilee Year?

Celebrating a jubilee every 50 years was an ancient

Hebrew custom (see Leviticus 25:8-13). It was a year of

rest and restoration, when captives were set free, debts

were paid, and land was not sown or harvested.

In the 1300s, the Catholic Church adopted the tradition

of proclaiming a jubilee every 50 years to encourage

people to return to a life of holiness. By the 1400s, a

jubilee was proclaimed every 25 years so each generation

could participate in the celebration. Our last “ordinary”

jubilee took place during the year 2000, marking the

second millennial anniversary of Christ’s birth.

But there is also a Catholic tradition of proclaiming an

“extraordinary jubilee” outside the 25-year cycle. Our last

“extraordinary jubilees” were held in 1933 and 1983,

marking the 1900th and the 1950th anniversaries of

Christ’s death and resurrection.

Why Mercy?

There is a tremendous need for mercy in our world

today. Pope Francis wants us to bring “consolation to the

poor … liberty to those bound by new forms of slavery in

our modern society,” spiritual sight to those who have lost

touch with God, and human dignity to those from whom it

has been taken.

The pope also stresses that living a merciful life does

not mean that we ignore justice in our society. Indeed, he

reminds us, “Mercy is not opposed to justice but rather

expresses God’s way of reaching out to the sinner, offering

him a new chance to look at himself, convert, and believe”

What Will Happen?

On December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception

and the 50th anniversary of the close of the Second

Vatican Council, Pope Francis will open a Holy Door in

St. Peter’s Basilica that remains sealed except during

jubilee years. When he crosses the threshold, this door

will become a “Door of Mercy.” In the weeks that follow,

Holy Doors will be opened by cardinals and bishops in

basilicas, cathedrals, and shrines all over the world.

Missionaries of Mercy

Pope Francis will send out “Missionaries of Mercy,” who

are priests with the authority to forgive even the most

serious sins. They will bring God’s love to those in need of

pardon.

24 Hours of Mercy

Pope Francis is asking for “24 Hours for the Lord” in

every diocese on the Friday and Saturday preceding the

Fourth Week of Lent. During this time, we can encounter

the merciful Christ in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

“Let us place the Sacrament of Reconciliation at the

center once more in such a way that it will enable people

to touch the grandeur of God’s mercy with their own

hands.”

The Holy Father asks each of us to celebrate by

showing to others the mercy that God constantly extends

to all of us. The motto for the jubilee year will be

“Merciful like the Father.” Because we are touched by

God’s mercy, we can be merciful toward others.

like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever

sees you sees him. Show us your face and we will be

saved.
