By Pastor Cheryl Lenten Journeys

Our life is one big journey. We come into this world as mere babes and leave it to go back home to God. During our lifetime, we may make many journeys and may even travel to faraway places. We usually think of journeys in terms of leaving our homes and traveling to some other place on earth. In the middle of winter, we may have traveled to a warm location or wished we could have gone there.

Every journey has the potential to change us. But we can also take a journey that is inward focused. That is what Lent is about, taking that journey inward into our soul and our relationship with God.

The journey starts out with Ash Wednesday, March 6 this year. We come to this service to be reminded that we are dust and of our mortality. As the ashes are placed on our foreheads, the words from Genesis are spoken, “remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return.” The ashes remind us that we are sinners who need to repent. The cross on our foreheads also reminds us of Jesus resurrection and forgiveness. This does not sound like a fun place to start our journey, but it is necessary. It is our reality check of who we really are, sinners living in physical bodies. Our bodies are amazing things, but we are more than our bodies. Our bodies don’t last but our souls do.

This Lenten Journey lasts for 40 days, not counting Sundays. It is based on Jesus who after his baptism was in the wilderness for 40 days. In those 40 days Jesus fasted and was tempted by the devil who offered to Jesus things that would be to his liking. Jesus refuses the temptations. After the 40 days, Jesus begins his ministry of teaching, healing, and collection of disciples.

During Lent, we may not be in the wilderness but we can still go on a journey. One of the things we can do that is like Jesus is fast. Fasting is a Christian discipline. Jesus talked about when we fast not to be like the Pharisees who would let everyone know that they were fasting. Fasting can be just one meal, or two meals. Starting out one should stay with just one day at a time. The time spent on preparing, eating, and clean up can be spent focusing on God. This Lenten journey can be a time for soul searching and reflection. Questions that one can ask are: Am I the person that God created me to be? Am I living my life as a disciple of Christ 24/7? Am I doing the will of God in my life or just my will? If I am not, what can I do with God’s help to change?

This Lenten journey can be a time for a reflection of Jesus. It is a time to think and study his life, his teachings, his ministry, his death, his burial, and his resurrection. One can read one of the gospel texts, Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John. Each text uniquely tells of Jesus’ life. As a disciple, one is to become like the teacher. After reading the text, ask yourself, “how can I become more Christ-like during my Lenten journey and beyond?”

During the Lenten Journey, one can work on the relationship that one has with God. One of the ways to work on any relationship is communication. The way we communicate with God is through our prayers. Prayer is having a conversation with God. It is being in contact with God so that His life and power can be channeled through us into others. Prayer and a prayer life are life-creating and life-changing for us and others. We come to God as his beloved children, being open, honest and trusting when we pray.

This Lenten Season of the Church year, take a journey inward with God. Become closer to him, become more like his Son, Jesus, by fasting, study and prayer. Even though it may seem that we start on a low note with Ash Wednesday, by taking a journey with God, you will hit a higher note on Easter because you took the journey.

Lenten Wednesday Round Robin Series 2019 The Round Robin series for Lent will be “Why We Worship”. Each week, an area pastor will be sharing one of the many reasons we gather to worship. Additionally, we will have the opportunity to participate in a faith practice each week. Children are also invited to participate and hands-on learning materials will help them engage with each week’s theme. Our schedule for March (4:30 and 6:15pm service times) is…

Ash Wednesday, March 6th—Pastor Cheryl Indehar of Christ the King Ancient Mystery & Wonder March 13th—Pastor Ronald Myers of Epiphany Lutheran in Eagle Lake Confession & Healing

March 20th—Pastor Scott Olson of Grace Lutheran in Mankato Peace & Reconciliation March 27th—Pastor Trish Reedstrom of Messiah Lutheran in North Mankato Sing to the Lord

Call Committee Corner Your elected call committee has been hard at work with all the behind-the-scenes work necessary for our successful call process. One important area is gathering needed information for the Ministry Site Profile (MSP).

This document gathers information about CTK – Who We Are, Our Vision for Mission, Leadership Needs and Opportunities.

An important step in completion of the (MSP) is to obtain feedback from our church members. To do this a Call Committee 2019 Survey has been created to offer everyone the opportunity to help us determine CTK current strengths and areas for improvement. Your response to the CTK survey can be done electronically by visiting the CTK website, using your personal computer or by completing a paper copy, which is available in the church office for those who find this more convenient. Survey responses are anonymous and the deadline is Wednesday February 27.

Once the survey feedback is received, it will be used to complete our Ministry Site Profile which will be sent to the synod office. This will then officially begin the candidate search process.

The “Messenger”, weekly “Good News”, e-mail and church service announcement time will be used to continue keeping you informed during our call process. Remember it is important if you have questions; please contact any member of the call committee or Pastor Patrick.

Prayer Article Series submitted by Pastor Donohue Sarff With Christ in the School of Prayer by Andrew Murray (From the Introduction – Page 7) “And then just one thing more. Thousands have in these last years found an unspeakable blessing in learning how

completely Christ is our life, and how He undertakes to be and to do all in us that we need. I know not if we have yet learned to apply this truth to our prayer-life. Many complain that they have not the power to pray in faith, to pray the effectual prayer that avails much. The message I would fain bring them is that the blessed Jesus is waiting, is longing, to teach them this. Christ is our life: in heaven He ever lives to pray; His life in us is an ever-praying life, if we will but trust Him for it. Christ teaches us to pray not only by example, by instruction, by command, by prom-ise, but by showing us Himself, the ever-living Intercessor, as our Life. It is when we believe this, and go and abide in Him for our prayer-life too, that our fears of not being able to pray aright will vanish, and we shall joyfully and triumphantly trust our Lord to teach us to pray, to be Himself the life and the power of our prayer.” (Note from Pastor Donohue Sarff: Our Prayer-Instructing-Jesus does more than lecture, he demonstrates prayer!)
