  • SACRED HEART PARISH

    PARISH PRESENTATION

    ON OUR NEW MASS SCHEDULE

    TO BEGIN JULY 2, 2016

  • WHY ARE WE CHANGING?

In June 2015, Sacred Heart Parish adopted a 5 year pastoral plan, Hearts on Fire, which includes the goal to “create a vibrant youth (Middle School & High School) faith community”.

To meet that goal, our parish agreed to add a youth oriented Mass on Sundays at 5pm for a trial period, beginning January 24th, 2016.

It is now time to evaluate and decide what Mass schedule is best for Sacred Heart Parish.

  • WHY ARE WE CHANGING? ContinuedOur average Mass attendance is 850-900

    parishioners per weekend

    Our Church seats 700

We currently need only 2 Masses to accommodate all who are worshipping here on an average weekend.

We want to arrive at a 3 Mass weekend schedule that will maximize opportunities to attend Mass and minimize negative impact on parishioners.

  • Factors to Consider:

What are the Mass schedules of neighboring parishes?

What is our recent history of Mass attendance at Sacred Heart?

Has the Sunday 5pm youth Mass contributed to a “vibrant youth faith community” at Sacred Heart?

What is the best time for faith formation classes for all parishioners that “will promote lifelong faith formation for all”?

  • Other Factors to Consider:

Are there sufficient, trained liturgical ministers willing to serve the Mass schedule?

What is the best use of our music ministry resources?

How will the Mass schedule effect the pastor’s other sacramental and pastoral responsibilities on the weekends?

  • Youth Survey results

A short survey sent to 355 e-mail addresses of families with children in middle school and high school.

    83 parents and youth responded:

    52 parents

    25 High Schoolers

    6 Middle Schoolers

65 have attended a Sacred Heart Youth Mass

  • Important factors for those who attend Youth Mass

Time and day of Mass 71

    Style of music 47

    Youth as Liturgical Ministers 27

    My friends are there 21

    Other:

    Youth directed homilies

    Engaging priest and relevant homilies

    Distance from home

    Dynamic priest

    Length of Mass

  • Important factors for those who have not attended Sacred Heart Youth Mass

I do not go to Mass very often: 4

I go to Mass at another church: 5

I go to Mass at another time at Sacred Heart: 9

  • If the later Sunday morning Mass were a youth-oriented Mass would you go?

    YES - 40

    NO - 39

  • Does having Youth Group immediately after the Youth Mass make you more likely to attend the Youth Mass?

    Yes – 34

    No - 42

  • Highlights from suggestions for ways to get our parish families with youth involved at Mass

Our boys go to a Catholic high school so at this point between academics, family time, sports we don't have time to get involved at Sacred Heart.

Continue doing what you are doing - we have loved it when able to attend!! It is nice to have a Sunday evening option when the morning has conflicts. It would be wonderful to have Father really engage the youth and make them want to be a part of this Holy Sacrament. Lots of warm/encouraging smiles I think would go along way -definitely with our son!

It is difficult to go to the same Mass every weekend. Having a more lively Mass at 11:00am and 5:00pm Sun would be great. We almost never attend the 9am Mass.

  • Highlights from Survey Comments

I understand why Sunday night is chosen as the Youth Mass time and why Youth group follows the Mass. It's hard for us, however, because we have extended family in the area, and we often need to be with our family on a Sunday evening. I wish we could attend more often on a Sunday evening

Almost everything is done in song, which lengthens the service. Mass has gone from 50 min to 1 hour to now often 75 min. Hard for families when it is that long. If it can't be said in a few minutes, you lose the kids attention. Adults too. Be direct and to the point with sermons. Less singing. More Eucharistic ministers not less. Get back to a 50 minute Mass. Less is more.

  • Highlights from other comments

Need to give it some time and let more people get used to it. I'm not sure how well it is publicized. We enjoy the Sunday night Mass and the youth involvement.

The band is great . Use them for another Mass if teen Mass changes... Kids need to be EM without a lot of obstacles or training . Let them do it.

I love the youth Mass. Having a 14 year old, I am trying to make Mass more relevant to her and the youth Mass does this. Before this was an option, we attended Holy Family youth Mass. Your ultimate goal is to bring more families into the church - my ultimate goal is to keep my daughter in the church... I believe this youth Mass is a win for everyone. I hope it continues
