Everyone knows that family life is a combination of

happiness and sadness, with a lot of the ordinary in between.

But what about the Holy Family? Surely there was nothing

    but peace and happiness?

Not really. Life wasn’t always a bed of roses for them.

Remember Joseph’s initial plan to divorce Mary to protect her

from shame when her pregnancy was discovered (Matthew

1:19)? Or Mary having to give birth in a stable (Luke 2:1-7)?

Or what about Mary and Joseph losing track of their son on

the way home from Jerusalem (2:44)? They also had to deal

with Herod’s murderous rage, a secret flight to Egypt,

resettlement in Nazareth, and Joseph’s early death. All of

these occasions, and more besides, could have filled them

with anxious, fearful thoughts. In similar circumstances, we

certainly would have felt tempted to wish for an easier life.

But whatever Mary and Joseph and Jesus thought about

their struggles, one thing is clear. They never gave up.

"Padre, derrama tu amor misericordioso y sanador

    sobre cada familia hoy."

This feast is a celebration of Mary’s motherhood of Jesus. On this day we are reminded of the

role that the Blessed Virgin played in the plan of our salvation. Through the Holy Spirit, God the

Father prepared Mary to be the dwelling place where His Son and His Spirit could dwell among

men. Christ’s birth was made possible by Mary’s fiat, or sanctioning of God’s plan with her words,

“Be it done to me according to thy word.” Calling Mary “Mother of God” is the highest honor we can

give to her. Just as Christmas honors Jesus as the “Prince of Peace,” the Solemnity of Mary, Mother

of God honors Mary as the “Queen of Peace.” New Year’s Day is also designated as the “World Day of

Peace,” further acknowledging the role of Mary in our hearts and in our world.

Father in heaven, creator of all, you ordered the earth to bring forth life and crowned its goodness by creating the

family of man. In history's moment when all was ready, you sent your Son to dwell in time, obedient to the laws of life

in our world. Teach us the sanctity of human love, show us the value of family life, and help us to live in peace with

all men that we may share in your life for ever. We ask this through Christ the Lord. Amen.

In their faithfulness and trust—and even more so, in their

commitment to love one another—they show us how to

    weather the storms of life.

Love. That’s what makes a holy family. Not the

sentimental love of songs and movies but the strong,

relentless, stubborn love of God. The divine love that the

Spirit pours into our hearts (Romans 5:5). The selfless love

that bears all things, hopes all things, and forgives all

things. The pure love of a God who became one of us and

    died to save us.

No family has a perfect life. Every family faces hardships

of one sort or another. But every family also has a heavenly

Father who loves them and delights in teaching them how to

love each other. So on this feast of the Holy Family, let’s

pray for our families, and for every family on earth. May we

all learn to “put on love” (Colossians 3:14)!

“Father, pour out your merciful, healing love

    on every family today.”

  • Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

    Friday January 1, 2021

9:30 am to 6:00 pm in the St. Ferdinand Chapel

You are invited Friday, January 1st, to come and receive the graces promised from the source of ultimate love, Jesus Christ.

Jesus, work in me and draw me more deeply into my relationship with you.

Jesus said “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you.” (John 14:27) The outward peace we can experience

in Adoration (the quiet and the stillness) reaches much deeper. It leads to an inner peace that affects all areas

of our lives. It doesn’t mean everything in our life will be perfect and without suffering, but Christ’s peace

means that we know that the storms of life can’t shake us.

This Christmas season brings us the

opportunity to reflect on the Incarnation

of God when, in his infinite love and

mercy, became man. We see this in a

tangible way when we reflect upon the

manger. The creator of heaven and

Earth lay helpless as a baby,

surrounded by his parents, Mary and Joseph.

The Holy Family serves as an example for all of our

families of what it means to live faithfully. It is in the

home that we receive faith from our families. It is also in

the home that our faith grows and is nourished so that we

can then take our faith into the world. For this reason, the

family is known as the “Domestic Church.”

At this unique time when many people are spending

more time at home than usual, we have an opportunity to

strengthen faith in our families, whether they have one or

    many people in them.

Starting on December 27, 2020, the Feast of the Holy

Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, we observe the

“Year of the Domestic Church,” inaugurated by the Most

    Reverend Joe S. Vásquez.

For the next year, we have the opportunity to focus on

faith in our home and family life. In what ways does the

Holy Family serve as an example of living faithfully for our

own families? In what ways does our family share faith with

    each other?

Don’t forget to pick up your Baby Bank after Mass today!

As we commemorate the feast of the Holy Family, we ask

you to remember those families that need help during or

after an unplanned pregnancy. Your donation will help pro-

life efforts in our parish and throughout the diocese. The

Gabriel Project, Project Rachel, Sidewalk Ministry, Pro-Life

Help Line and much more will receive funds from this

campaign. You can also donate online on our website page

at stferdinandblanco.org/give. For more information or to

volunteer, please contact Marlene Keller at 210-367-2939

    or email [email protected].

    B a b y B a n k s a r e h e r e !

    Year of the Domestic Church

The experience of current events, most notably the COVID-19 pandemic, have brought into deep focus our time spent at

home. For many, it has meant a much different experience of work, school and social activities. This time at home has given

us moments to encounter God; our Catholic tradition calls these encounters with God the “Domestic Church.”

On December 27, 2020, the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I will inaugurate a “Year of the Domestic

Church” in the Diocese of Austin. This day will begin the year-long observance of the home as the first school of Christian

life. Through prayer and action, Christian households lead to a flourishing of the parish family.

May the Year of the Domestic Church be a time for us to experience and impart to others the merciful love of the Father

through his Son, Jesus Christ. Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend Joe S. Vásquez

Wednesday, Dec 23 – Wednesday Jan 13th; classes resume

    Wednesday, Jan 20th

This Christmas, may you and your loved

ones know God’s love and peace.

    A Note of Gratitude:

Thank you to the generous parishioner providing an area

rug for the RE building, and to parents providing a tasty

treat for catechists the last day of class before the

    Christmas holidays.

Needed: Adults certified in Ethics and Integrity who can

serve as a chaperone when RE classes are held via Zoom.

No need to present any information, just sign on through a

link and be present during the class for EIM purposes.

You don’t even need to leave home! EIM guidelines call for

two certified adults to be present for each class presented

via Zoom. Classes usually have an aide who serves as the

second adult, but in some cases our aides cannot attend

and an additional adult is needed. Please contact the DRE

at 833-0444 if you can serve in this capacity. The

generous donation of your time would be greatly

    appreciated.

Do not be afraid to go and bring Christ into

every area of life, to the fringes of society,

even to those who seem farthest away and

    most indifferent.
