The Pastor’s Corner
I viewed again the YouTube of Susan Boyle’s very first
audition on Britain’s Got Talent. Talk about a serendipitous
performance. Her meteoric audition went viral. This one
video clip has been viewed over 150 million times around the
world! It was the initial reaction of the audience that strikes
you, however. The audience was “murmuring,” snickering,
laughing at her when she walked onto the stage. They
seriously prejudged her by her very plain appearance. Well,
were they ever surprised!
Murmuring ...a word with a poignant meaning in both
the Old and New Testaments! Some English
translations use the alternative word, grumbling. The former
word, however, has such a self-righteous tone to it. Two
weeks ago, the Hebrews murmured against Moses. Last
week’s gospel tells that some people murmured against Jesus,
and He calls them on it: “Stop murmuring among
yourselves…” The final reaction of Jesus’ audience will be
read in two weeks. Suffice it to say, the Lord was inviting
them to a deeper appreciation of who He is as the Bread of
Life. Opportunity knocked, but many
prejudged Him. Many will close the door, and then walk
away from Him.
As Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI put it:
In the sacrament of the altar, the Lord meets us,
men and women created in God's image and
likeness, and becomes our companion along the
way. In this sacrament, the Lord truly becomes
food for us, to satisfy our hunger for truth and
freedom. Since only the truth can make us free,
Christ becomes for us the food of truth.
(Apostolic Exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis)
The response of those who heard these words from the
mouth of Jesus are read this weekend. Today, we have the
grace of over 2,000 years of teaching on this truth of our faith.
The challenge remains for us, members of the contemporary
Church, to live light of this truth.
So, never murmur the responses to the Lord at Mass.
Express them with full enthusiasm because that expresses our
living faith in Him, the Bread of Life. See you next week!
Enjoy and live the faith!
