Pentecost Sunday Food Drive A huge “THANK YOU” to all SFDS Families and Parishioners for your wonderful response on Pentecost Sunday – and over the past three weeks – to the Food Drive for our neighbors at St. Elisabeth of Hungary Parish in Van Nuys (with produce also going to Loaves & Fishes and M.E.N.D.). Fr. Shinto Sebastian, who runs St Elisabeth’s Food Bank, has been able to serve a record 225 families with our support (up from 100 families in the pre-Covid-19 era) – and this was before the haul of produce deliv-ered to the Church/School parking lot on Pentecost Sunday. In addition to this generous donation of food, an amazing $925 in checks and cash was donated directly to SVDP, enabling more produce to be purchased at wholesale discount rates for the St Elisabeth food pan-try. Thank you everyone for your generosity of spirit and action – and a big shout out to Fr. Mike and Ms. Goe-thals for their leadership and support with this initiative and to the Knights of Columbus for volunteering to help with produce collection and delivery on Pentecost Sun-day.

Did You Know? Teach children everyday actions
to reduce the spread of germs It is appropriate to frequently remind your children about ways to avoid or reduce the spread of germs and to start practicing at home. Among the tips are: Stay away from people who are coughing, sneezing or sick. Remind them to cough or sneeze into a tissue or their elbow, then throw the tissue into the trash. Get the children into a handwashing habit. Teach them to wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after blowing their nose, coughing, or sneezing; going to the bathroom; and before eating or preparing food.If soap and water are not available, teach them to use hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizer should contain at least 60% alcohol. Supervise young children when they use hand sanitizer to prevent swal-lowing alcohol. Transformation The effect of our sharing in the Body and Blood of Christ is to change us into what we receive.

The History of the American Flag Flag Day June 14
On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed an act establishing an official flag for the new nation. The resolution stated: “Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation." On Aug. 3, 1949, President Harry S. Truman officially declared June 14 as Flag Day. Origins The origin of the first American flag is unknown. Some historians believe it was designed by New Jersey Congressman Francis Hopkinson and sewn by Phila-delphia seamstress Betsy Ross. The name Old Glory was given to a large, 10-by-17-foot flag by its owner, William Driver, a sea captain from Massachusetts. Inspiring the common nickname for all American flags. Today the flag consists of 13 horizontal stripes, sev-en red alternating with six white. The stripes represent the original 13 Colonies and the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well; red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white sym-bolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigi-lance, perseverance and justice. The National Museum of American History has un-dertaken a long-term preservation project of the enor-mous 1814 garrison flag that survived the 25-hour shelling of Fort McHenry in Baltimore by British troops and inspired Francis Scott Key to compose "The Star-Spangled Banner." There are a few locations where the U.S. flag is flown 24 hours a day, by either presidential proclama-tion or by law: - Fort McHenry, National Monument and His-toric Shrine, Baltimore, Maryland - Flag House Square, Baltimore, Maryland - United States Marine Corps Memorial (Iwo Jima), Arlington, Virginia - On the Green of the Town of Lexington, Massachusetts - The White House, Washington, D.C. - United States customs ports of entry - Grounds of the National Memorial Arch in Valley Forge State Park, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania
