ST. MARTIN OF TOURS ACADEMY July 8, 2018

A Fair Trade School and Parish In December 2015, St. Martin Academy received the designation of becoming the first Fair Trade Catholic Elementary School in the nation and 2nd elementary school in California.

Fair Trade respects human dignity, promotes the common good, advances economic justice, empowers disadvantaged people, supports the conservation of the environment & cultivates global solidarity.

Ongoing Fair Trade education and promotion is a priority within our school community. Students are educated and empowered through fair trade curriculum to be conscious consumers. In addition, the school commits to using fair trade products on campus. (Soccer balls, t-shirts, coffee, tea & chocolate) Students are encouraged to look for the labels when they shop!

SMA celebrated World Fair Trade day in May by becoming "agents for change" and created a human chain around the field. The assembly focused on the Principles of Fair Trade. On June 1st, Presley McMahon (Class of 2018) was awarded a certificate for outstanding achievement by Fair Trade Campaigns. Presley was one of the founding members of the SMA Fair Trade Committee and will be joining the Fair Trade committee at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace.

Our parish is also designed a Fair Trade Congregation. Fair Trade coffee is served after Mass and within ministries of the parish. Fair trade coffee can be found at Costco, (Kirkland brand), Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Target and Vons. Save the date for our annual Fair Trade Gift Fair on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018!

Fair Trade & Catholic Social Teachings Dignity of Work: Fair trade promotes the dignity of workers by ensuring fair wages and by helping vulnerable producers maintain their livelihoods when traditional economic structures shut them out. Solidarity: Fair trade means we recognize and respect the hard work that farmers and artisans do. By purchasing their coffee, chocolate and crafts, we stand in solidarity with them by supporting their economic livelihoods. Dignity of the Human Person: Human dignity comes directly from God. Fair trade recognizes this by creating economically just, long-term trading partnerships between diverse people from all over the world. Stewardship of God’s Creation: Treating the environment with respect and ensuring that resources will be available for future generations is a core principle of fair trade. Fair trade means that we are good stewards of the planet through our economic choices. Students & Staff created a “human chain” for solidarity Ben & Jerry’s served Fair Trade vanilla ice

cream to the students & staff!
