Ss. Joachim and Anne 26 July
Today, 26 July, is the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time. It is also an
important Feast Day. The Church remembers Saints Joachim and
Anne, the parents of the Virgin Mary. Joachim was a shepherd
from Jerusalem. He and his wife Anne were an elderly childless
couple when, one day, while Joachim was at work in the fields as
usual, an angel appeared to announce the birth of a child, and
Anna also had the same vision. They called their little girl Mary,
which means “loved by God,” and then they moved to Nazareth,
where they educated Mary, teaching her the law of the Lord.

Resuming Masses
at our Church on Wednesday, 17 June 2020
This is a synopsis of the Letter first published on 15 June 2020.
For the full text, see the bulletin for 21 June 2020.
Dear members of St. Maria Goretti Parish,
Things look a little different as we have returned to Church.
As we re-open, we must do so in phases. Our capacity is
limited due to directives from the Province of Ontario.
We warmly invite you to consider how you might share your
time and talents as a Volunteer. The many tasks required for
re-opening are significant and we need more Volunteers than
ever to help. If you’d like to volunteer, please contact Gavin
Moniz at: [email protected].
Our joy of re-opening our Church is balanced with required
restrictions. However, returning to Sacramental life and
gathering as a community is sustenance essential for our
faith community. We are happy to welcoming you back. Be
assured that you remain in our prayers each day.
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Edwin Galea, Fr. Elias Chachati, Deacon Ramon Villardo
Face Masks Mandatory
New Law: 7 July 2020
I want to thank all of you for your co-operation and kindness
as we have returned to Church over these past weeks. It has
been so great to see parishioners once again and I thank
everyone who has been so helpful in this re-opening stage,
especially our wonderful volunteers. Thank you!
A new by-law has been passed that makes the use of masks
or face coverings inside all public places mandatory. This
includes Churches and our own parish. While a number of
restrictions have been lifted in recent days, we are still in the
middle of a pandemic and need to take the appropriate steps
to minimize any potential spread of Covid-19.
Thank you for your co-operation as we take care of one
another and keep our community safe and healthy.
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Edwin
Special Gifts
Our Parish extends its sincere gratitude to the many thoughtful
Parishioners who have kindly donated gifts that have benefitted
our entire family of faith. Among our patrons:
Cecilia Bertazzon-Stieger, Mary Paula Galea Martino, Corine
Maulion, Amado Perri, Shoba Ryan.
A special Thank You to all Re-opening Committee Team Leaders
and volunteers for supplies you have donated, and above all for
your generous gift of time and talent in welcoming and assisting
our Parishioners as they return for Mass.
Re-opening Committee
Many thanks to Gavin Moniz, and the members of the
Parish Re-opening Committee, for their dedication to
our faith community, and for their help in making sure
that everything is in order to allow us to reassemble, in
accordance with the guidelines issued by the Provincial
government and the Archdiocese of Toronto.
As it becomes available, pertinent information will be
posted directly on our website home page.
Thanks to everyone for your patience, collaboration
and prayer. – Fr. Edwin Galea
Donation Needed: Small shelf set
The Re-opening Committee could use a small set of shelves to
store the supplies required to clean the Church, under the new
guidelines. We could purchase something from a local hardware
store; but in our parish, it is likely that there are families who have
redundant shelves sitting unused in a basement or garage, or just
storing rubbish. If someone would consider donating a set of
shelves (without the rubbish), it would be most appreciated. The
unit should be sturdy, not fancy, and easily capable of holding jugs
of disinfecting and sanitizing fluids, and boxes of wipes, gloves,
face masks, etc. We would need at least 4 shelves, so the unit
should be 1 ½ - 2 meters high. Please advise Fr. Edwin by sending
a quick email to the Parish Office: [email protected].
RCIA, RCIC Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults & Children
Pray for all in our parish R.C.I.A. process, who preparing for
the Sacraments of Initiation; as well as the youth in our
parish R.C.I.C. process. Due to ongoing precautions to deal
with the Covid 19 pandemic, groups meetings cannot be
held at the Church. However, instruction is being provided
on line, and information is being disseminated through email
messages. Spiritual support is also provided through the
resources printed in this bulletin, and through the various
links provided by the Archdiocese on the parish website.
Prayer before Mass
Receive, O Holy Trinity, One God, this Holy Sacrifice of the
Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. I, Your unworthy
servant, now desire to offer this to Your Divine Majesty by
the hands of Your Priest, with all the Sacrifices which have
been and will be offered
to You, in union with the
most Holy Sacrifice
offered by Christ our
Lord at the Last Supper,
and on the Altar of the
Cross. Amen.
When the late Cardinal Carter found kids sleeping
outside his downtown office, he rallied community
support to open COVENANT HOUSE to serve these
vulnerable youth. Its doors officially opened in
February 1982 as Covenant House Toronto—the
second international site of the highly recognized
childcare agency Covenant House International.
Today, the 31-site network spans from Alaska to Latin
America.
For nearly 40 years, Covenant House has maintained
steadfast dedication to its mission: supporting the
vulnerable youth who come through its doors with
absolute respect and unconditional love.
Since the day it first opened its doors, Covenant House
Toronto has offered opportunity and hope to more than
95,000 young people.
Gerald Emmett Cardinal
Carter was born 1 March 1912
in Montreal. He began his life
of service in the Catholic
Church on 22 May 1937 when
he became a Priest. He spent
40 years as a Bishop, a role
highlighted by his work in the
community. He fought for
affordable housing for the
elderly and disabled.
His plan to build a shelter for
young homeless people in Toronto became a reality
with the opening of Covenant House in 1982. A second
Canadian Covenant House later opened in Vancouver.
Colleagues and parishioners praised his leadership and
guidance. Aloysius Cardinal Ambrozic, who
succeeded him as Archbishop of Toronto, remembered
the retired bishop's dedication to serving others. “He
was a priest, a pastor, a bishop, a father of the Second
Vatican Council. He spoke the word of God and acted
on it with wisdom, with perspicacity, with regard for
the gifts of others, and with visionary decisiveness,
meeting the vast variety of needs in the Church.”
ShareLife 2020 Living the Gospel !
ShareLife is the official annual charitable appeal of
the Archdiocese of Toronto, raising funds to support
over 40 Catholic agencies and grant recipients.
Today, we reflect on Living the Gospel by providing for those in need.
“Without you, ShareLife could not fulfill its mission to
Live the Gospel by providing for those in need.
Together we are making a real difference! My prayer is
that we may continue to respond to God's love by going
forth from ourselves to seek the good of others.”
- Cardinal Thomas Collins
Thanks to all for your support of our parish 2020
ShareLife. This is a real blessing, a tribute to the
generosity of every donor, at a time of great need.
This is the final week of the 2020 ShareLife Parish
Campaign. Please make a sacrificial gift through our
parish before 31 July.

Prayer to St. Michael
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou,
O Prince of the Heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
St. Maria Goretti
In St. Maria Goretti Parish, we
continue to seek the intercession
of our dear Patroness throughout
the year, and in a special way in
the month of July. Families are
encouraged to include the Prayer
to St. Maria Goretti in their daily
spiritual exercises, and to ask for
her powerful aid in our common
struggle against the forces of evil.
Prayer to St. Maria Goretti
O Saint Maria Goretti, who, strengthened by God’s Grace, did not hesitate, even at the age of twelve, to shed your blood and sacrifice life to defend your virginal purity, deign to look graciously on the unhappy human race, which has strayed far from the path of eternal salvation.
Teach us all, and especially modern youth, with what courage and haste we should flee anything that could offend Jesus and defile our souls with sin. Obtain for us from God great horror of sin so that, keeping our souls undefiled, we may live holy lives on earth and win eternal glory in heaven. Amen.
Memorare
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled
to your protection, implored your help,
or sought your intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly to you,
O Virgin of virgins, my Mother;
to you do I come; before you I stand,
sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word
Incarnate, despise not my petitions,
but in your mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
St. James the Apostle Feast Day: 25 July
St. James the Great [a.k.a. Santiago de Compostela]
was the son of Zebedee and Salome, and brother of St.
John the Evangelist. The title “the Great” is added to
his name to distinguish him from the other Apostle
James, known as “the Less.”
St. James the Great was one of Jesus’ first disciples.
James was fishing with his father and John the Apostle
when Jesus came to the shores of the Sea of Galilee and
called for the fishermen, who were unable to catch any
fish that day, to dip their nets in the water once again.
When the fishermen followed Jesus’ instructions, they
found their nets full, and after emptying the fish on
board, the boats nearly sank from their weight.
Later, James was one of only three called by Jesus to
witness his Transfiguration, and when he and his
brother wanted to call fire upon a Samaritan town, both
were rebuked by Jesus.
Following Christ’s Ascension, James spread the Gospel
across Palestine and throughout the Roman Empire. He
traveled and spread the Word for forty years in Spain.
It is said that one day, as he prayed, The Blessed Virgin
Mary appeared to him and asked him to build her a
Church, which he did.
Later, James returned to Jerusalem but was martyred
for his faith by King Herod, who decapitated him. Saint
James the Greater is known as the first Apostle to die.
As he was not allowed to be buried following his
martyrdom, his remains were taken to Compostela,
Spain, by some of his followers, who buried him.
In the 9th century his remains were moved into a tomb
in Santiago de Compostela, around which was built the
spectacular Cathedral of Santiago. Because Santiago de
Compostela is one of the most frequently visited place
for pilgrims, Pope Leo XIII declared it a shrine in 1884.
O glorious Apostle St. James, who by reason of your
fervent and generous heart was chosen by Jesus to be a
witness of His glory on Mount Tabor, and of His agony
in Gethsemane; obtain for us strength and consolation
in the unending warfare of this life, that we may receive
the victor's crown in heaven. Amen.

Prayer for the Unborn Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of (baby’s name), the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.
(Prayer of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen; Say this
every day for 9 months to save a baby’s life!)
Morning Prayer
In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, I begin this day by
thanking you, Lord, for having preserved me overnight. I
will try to make all I do today pleasing to You and in
accordance with Your will. My Mother Mary, watch over me
today. Dear St. Joseph, my Guardian Angel, and all you holy
saints of God, pray for me.
Mother of Perpetual Help
Let Mary bring peace into your life. Pray for
your special intentions at the Monday Novena
Mass to Our Mother of Perpetual Help. Rosary
at 6.40 pm, Mass at 7 pm.
O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who
have recourse to thee.
Stewardship 2020 Sunday Envelopes
Parishioners may pick up
2020 Sunday Offertory
Envelopes at the Vestibule
after Mass. They are for
registered parishioners only;
if you are new to the area and
have not yet registered,
welcome! Go to the Office
window, and fill a registration form.
Please ensure you have your own box: the number on
the label and on the envelopes must be the same.
Many thanks to all our faithful parishioners for your
generous support of our wonderful parish through your
weekly stewardship! This is an act of honour to God,
our Creator.
Tithing
Whether there is a crisis or not, we have to make
difference, for our God is Great. Determine through
your faith that the shadow of the Almighty will be upon
you. Even if work is slow and prosperity is limited,
things will be different because you will act by faith.
Every Sunday, every Day of the Lord, is a time of
consecration for tithers. Present your tithe to the
Almighty along with your thanksgiving for all blessings
received. That way, you will honour God and ensure
the secure ministry of the Church.
The Lord of hosts has sworn, “As I have designed, so
shall it be; and as I have planned, so shall it come to
pass.” - Isaiah 14:24
Therefore the Lord the God of Israel declares, “I
promised that your family and the family of your
ancestor should go in and out before me forever;” but
now the Lord declares, “Far be it from me; for those
who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me
shall be treated with contempt.” - 1 Samuel 2:30
Changes for our Parish Records
Please notify the Parish Office at 416-261-0076, if you:
- Have a change of address
- Have a new phone number, e-mail, cell phone
A simple phone call would keep our parish records
updated and eliminate unnecessary postage and
returned mail.
People
People come in all shapes and sizes!
Indonesia is home to some of the shortest people in the
world. Short and tall people are everywhere; but
Indonesia is home to some of the shortest people in the
world, according to data compiled by the Telegraph in
2017. When taking both genders into account, the
average adult is around 5 feet, 1.8 inches.
People in Bolivia don't tend to be much taller, with an
average adult height of 5 feet, 2.4 inches.
The tallest people among us live in the Netherlands,
where the average adult height is 6 feet.
