AT A PIVOTAL TIME FOR THE

PRO-LIFE MOVEMENT,WE CAN CONFRONT GROWING

CHALLENGES AND SAVE LIVES.

Over 40 members from our SACS Choir sang the National Anthem beautifully at the MN Twins game on Tuesday, September 28. The students were amazing and well behaved. We heard lots of positive feedback from Target Field/Twins staff and other spectators. The students got a “peace” sign from Byron Buxton and Max Kepler as they took their spots. Former Twins players, Akill Baddoo and Robbie Grossman, now players for the Detroit Tigers, greeted the choir with "awesome job" as they left the field.

Thank you to teachers; Kerry Joyce, Kortney Schroers, and Laura Wermerskirchen for chaperoning. Special thanks to music teachers, Courtney Bush and Lynn Hradnansky, for leading these choirs and working with them regularly, and to all their teachers for helping these kids become great citizens of the world. It was a super night for baseball and a huge success for SACS.

JOIN US FOR MCCL'S SHAKOPEE FALL TOUR MEETING ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 20

Each fall, Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL) holds informational pro-life meetings across the state. These meetings educate citizens about current trends and issues, legislation, elections, and more. They equip citizens to make a difference in their own communities.

All Fall Tour gatherings are free and open to the public. Each one-hour presentation is delivered by a speaker from the MCCL state office; attendees also receive a packet of crucial materials. Our goal is to inform, empower, and inspire Minnesotans to be effective pro-life citizens.

IF YOU WANT TO LEARN HOW

YOU CAN HELP SAVE LIVES, PLEASE COME!

Hear how YOU can save lives! Learn about the latest threats to unborn children and their mothers -- and what you can do to make a difference.

Wednesday, October 20 | 7 - 8 pm | Shakopee Public Library

Featured Speaker: David Hendrickson, MCCL’s Resource CoordinatorDavid will inform and equip you to help save lives during this crucial time for the pro-life movement. David ran MCCL’s Life Leadership Camp and coordinated the MCCL State Fair booth this year.

Ally is a beautiful, independent, charismatic woman who is a single mother and full-time student and paralegal.

However, her life was not always like this.

She spent many years in a very emotionally, mentally and physically abusive relationship, living day-to-day in fear and constant turmoil.

The good news is that Ally managed to make the decision that some abuse victims do not get to make: She left her abuser.

The bad news is that things got worse then. Her abuser’s rage grew, and he began stalking and harassing her on a 24-hour basis. He tried to kill her several times. And then he and his family began an eight-year court battle to take custody of their daughter away from Ally.

And then, finally, some really good news. Ally survived the repeated attempts on her life, and she won the custody battle for her daughter. Today, Ally is thriving, stronger and smarter than ever, relishing a life of freedom and peace after abuse, her daughter at her side. All of this, she says, was by the grace of God.

WHAT IS EMOTIONAL ABUSE?

In emotional abuse, an abuser will manipulate a survivor’s feelings in order to control that partner, which is a tactic akin to brainwashing or mind control. A survivor may find themselves deep into a relationship before realizing that their choices — everything from who they can talk to, see and where they can go, to whether or not they’re able to end the relationship — are no longer their own; an abusive partner is making them for him or her.

This is a tactic of abuse that is hard to spot and even harder to prove.

While some people may use the term “emotional abuse,” others may say “psychological abuse” or even “mental abuse.” These terms can be interchangeable, and it’s less important for a survivor to know their definitions than to know the red flags that encompass this type of abuse tactic.

In some way, shape or form, these terms mean that an abuser is trying to control a partner using emotional ploys — fear, isolation, guilt, shame.

Emotional abuse can include bullying, degradation, name-calling, a pattern of lying, gaslighting, coercive control, and threats of physical abuse.

If you think your partner may be using emotional abuse to control you, ask yourself some questions. Does your partner….Put you down, embarrass or shame you? Call you names? Accuse you of being unfaithful without basis? Ignore you? Demand to know where you are every minute? Treat you as inferior? Purposefully embarrass you in front of others? Not allow you to make decisions? Not validate your opinions? Threaten you? Tell you that you’re crazy? Belittle your accomplishments? Forbid you from talking to/seeing your friends, family or coworkers? Keep you from sleeping? Act possessively jealous? Cheat on you and then blame you? Tell you that you will never find anyone better? Point out your mistakes? Control what you wear or how you spend money? Threaten to hurt you/your children, your family or pets?

Emotional abuse can have long-term effects, just like physical abuse, including feelings of worthlessness, low self-esteem, inability to trust, anxiety, depression, digestion issues, insomnia, chronic headaches and suicidal thoughts or attempts.

Emotional abuse can escalate into serious physical violence. When a partner begins with nonphysical forms of abuse, often that abuse will escalate over time to physical violence.

Every October, we celebrate Respect Life Month.

We consider more deeply why every human life is

valuable and reflect on how to build a culture that protects life from conception to natural death.

ST. JOSEPH: FAITHFUL PROTECTOR OF MOTHER AND CHILD

The infant Christ “came into our world in a state of great vulnerability. He needed to be defended, protected, cared for, and raised by Joseph” (PC 5). The humble and often hidden carpenter of Nazareth accompanied Mary in her pregnancy, assisted at the birth of the Messiah in a stable, presented Jesus in the Temple, fled with his family far from their homeland to protect them, and lovingly raised Jesus as his own son in the years to come.

While the angel of the Lord appeared to Mary to announce that she would bring forth the Savior of the world, it was revealed to Joseph in a series of dreams how God’s plans would be brought to fulfillment. As Pope Francis highlights, “God trusted Joseph, as did Mary, who found in him someone who would not only save her life, but would always provide for her and her child” (PC 5).

Like every other human family, the Holy Family had to confront real and concrete challenges. Yet, “in every situation, Joseph declared his own ‘fiat’” (PC 3). His “yes” to the Lord meant that regardless of the hardship and personal sacrifice to himself, he consistently chose to put the needs of Mary and Jesus before his own. Joseph’s devotion helps reveal to us our own call to show special care for the lives of those whom God has entrusted to us.

During this Year of St. Joseph, each of us can find in him “an intercessor, a support, and a guide in times of trouble” (PC, Intro). Joseph shows us how to say “yes” to life, despite our own fears, frailties, and weaknesses. For it is Joseph who was “chosen by God to guide the beginnings of the history of redemption. He was the true ‘miracle’ by which God saves the child and his mother” (PC 5).

May we, too, be miracles in the lives of those who are most in need, especially at the beginning and end of life. Dear St. Joseph, you who were “able to turn a problem into a possibility by trusting always in divine providence” (PC 5), help us to imitate your faithful trust and courage.
