Council Meeting Notes from Jan 9 UNOFFICIAL (from the editor's unreadable notepad. -ed)

Grand Knight Don Simmons started the meeting on time at 7:30PM with one rap of the gavel; half the folks stood; half remained seated. (It's time for you guys to attend a 1st degree exemplification as spectators and be reminded of the protocol during the meeting! One rap is the call to order and be seated!- ed) There were 30 members attending.

CHAPLAIN'S MESSAGE: Fr. John's continued his talk on the Nicene creed as part of the Year of Faith. “For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, … and became man.” (This was deep and hard to capture in a few sentences. - ed) Jesus came down from heaven, so He “made the first move”; God loved us first! And Jesus came to us for our salvation, to free us from Adam's sin and its effects, by His saving grace.

Bills and Communications: GK Don Simmons reviewed some of the many activities that our council did during this past Christmas season. There was a lot of work done. “We get done by 8:30AM what some councils do in an entire day.” The state newsletter recaps several of our activities.

Don passed along Fr. Kyle Stanton's sincere “Thank you” for the help we have given to his parish and the local KofC council in Berlin, NH

COMMITTEE REPORTS:Money Items:The council took up last month's Notice of Motion “from the table” to propose the 2013 year budget. Bob Fournier, our treasurer, explained the entries. The budget was approved.

Gene Bryant, speaking for the trustees, took up the other notice of motion for the special donations account. This was also approved, and done quite quickly! (Bob recovered from the shock and is resting comfortably! - ed.)

Charlie Walsh reported that as of Jan 1, we have 256 members. Membership cards for 2013 are available. Members: get your 2013 dues paid to Charlie to receive your card. “No pay – no card!”

Admissions – Bill RichardsBill announced upcoming degrees. Bill has a steady stream of new members coming into our council. Thanks go to Bill and all the sponsors. Keep up the good work!

Pro-Life: Dennis GroulxOur parish Pro-Life Mass will be on Tuesday, Jan 22, at 7:00PM, at St. Joe's; Fr. John will officiate. This is the 40th “anniversary” of Roe v Wade. All 4th Degree Sir Knights are asked to come in tux and social baldric. (no regalia.)

Texas Hold-Em – Email from Larry BelairWe have concluded our 6th year of operation, and this year we ended up $12,000 ahead of our budget. It was a very good year! Thank you to all the workers who make this fund-raising a success. If anyone wants to join, see Larry for the needed paperwork.

Soldier Aid – Paul St.AmandI wish to thank the council for their continued financial support for this project. The funds you approve are used to buy snacks and treats for our soldiers. These are greatly appreciated by our troops, as evidenced by the many “Thank you's” we have gotten from far off places like Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Turkmenistan, Kosovo, and others where are troops are deployed in harm's way. To date, this program has shipped 351 packages, weighing 5, 029 pounds. It costs our council about $1,200 a year to fund this effort. I thank you, my Brothers, for joining me in this program. 4

Salem Christmas Fund Thanks You – Alan PhairWell, once again, our Council outdid itself in its support of the Salem Christmas Fund project. Every year that the call goes out for help, I know that I can count on our members to be there. As you know, without the help of this Council, the Salem Christmas Fund would be hard pressed to survive to help the many individuals & families that it does. I cannot list all the Brother Knights and their family members who helped out but at last count there were 46 of you. Quite a showing. Less I forget, I would like to give special thanks to Butch Kealey, Jose Moreno, Ed Powers and Chanel Simard for working at the transfer station collecting money on a cold Saturday. They raised close to $1,000.

Many of you took part in up to 9 different endeavors. We not only had to pick up & set up tables, we had to help set up toys, run toy distribution nights, unload food at Rockingham park for the food baskets, put baskets together and help distribute them & then pack up any excess toys to start next year, load them onto the truck and bring to our storage container. At the same time, while we had the truck, we

picked up the tables and returned them to St Joseph’s and the Council. All this work is not counting the other areas that are done behind the scenes such as the making of the advertisements, collecting the funds and toys along with purchasing toys to supplement areas where there is a shortage especially for teens. In total, not counting the work of Sally Sweet and her regular helpers, the members of the Christmas Fund Board, which include Brother Knights Butch Kealey, Chief Paul Donovan and Dick O’Shaughnessy and Fire department & Police Dept personnel, the Council put in approximately 268 man (and woman) hours into this project. You all should be very proud of your accomplishments. From the bottom of my heart and from all the members of the Salem Christmas Fund , thank you for your dedication to this project and your willingness to be there when called upon.

Sincerely, Alan Phair, Chairman, Salem Christmas Fund Inc.

Some More Coats for Kids – Paul St.AmandState Deputy, Joel Plante, received 84 CASES of coats, at no charge, from Supreme. He passed this news throughout the state, and our council jumped at the chance to get more coats. Free was a nice price! My wife and I drove out to Joel's home in Farmington, NH, where we met his charming wife Vicki. We took all coats unaccounted for, 5 cases, 60 coats. Other councils got the news faster, were quicker than me, and/or had bigger trucks! (Oh, yeah. There should be a rule: State Deputies should live somewhere closer to Salem! Farmington is a long way off! But meeting Vicki made it worth the drive.)

When Peggy and I got home, we opened the cases and “mixed and shuffled” the coats together, so that we had a random assortment of colors and styles to hand out. We delivered half our load to the Salem Town Welfare Office and half to “Ruth's House” in Haverhill, MA. Ruth's House is a faith-based thrift store that supplies clothing to families. Our coats are going to their “referral program,” where needy recipients get coats free of charge. Ruth's House works with 85 agencies throughout the Merrimack Valley.

Next year, our council plans to increase our support for this effort, and get more coats and in a variety of colors and styles. We will also look for other distribution channels, perhaps Catholic Charities or our local church food pantries.

Moving TalesWhen Christmas season has passed, it's time to take down the decorations. So, Bill Richards, the “Major Manger Manager” organized a work detail to pack away the Parish's Manager into the garage on Saturday, Jan 12. (I think Bill was in charge, he had the key to the garage. -ed) Note to self: bring charged-up power drills next time!

And then, at the Jan 9 council meeting, Ken spoke up and said that “While we were doing that, it's going to be a nice warm, sunny day on Saturday, (HA!) so that would be a good time to do another good deed and install the Council's wheelchair ramp for a hospitalized Salem resident.”

Bingo Report – Ron Bourque

Ron prepares a report for the Bingo operations, so that the team can track results, measure progress, and assess the need for changes and the impact of a change. As many might know, Bingo started in the St. Joseph School auditorium, migrated to Rockingham Park, and most recently moved to the Kiwanis Hall in Nashua. We had a “low point” when the Rockingham Park operation closed down and it took a while to recover to the past levels of success. Now, Bingo is once again providing us money to fund our charitable programs. Here are a few excerpts from Ron's latest report.

A picture is worth a thousand words. See for yourself the progress to date! Attendance is up and, thus, so are the profits.

Joking Around: This information is for Catholics only. It must not be divulged to non-Catholics. The less they know about our rituals and top secret code words, the better off they are.

• AMEN: The only part of a prayer that everyone knows.• CHOIR: A group of people whose singing allows the rest of the Parish to lip-sync.• RECESSIONAL HYMN: The last song often sung more quietly, since most of the people have already left.• JESUITS: An order of priests known for their ability to find colleges with good basketball teams.• RELICS: People who have been going to Mass for so long, they actually know when to sit, kneel, and stand.

Other News from the State:

Annual NH March for Life << This is the link to the Diocese's information. Peter Klecan is organizing car pool. Email him. This march takes place on Saturday, January 19, in Concord. Mass is at 10:00AM at St. John the Evangelist, 72 South Main St. in Concord.

Newtown, CT and Sandy Hook SchoolFrom an email sent to Joel Plante, and published in the State Newsletter of January.Date: Wed.19 Dec 2012 13:27:56 -0500 Subject: Three Hail Mary Prayer Drive for Newtown, CT

Dear Fellow Brothers:

Our parish and community were deeply affected by the events at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. Newtown Connecticut is 55% Catholic and our Church, St. Rose of Lima, has suffered a heavy toll. This week we are having 8 funerals, most of them for children.

Many, many people have asked how they can help. One way is with your prayers. Therefore, the Newtown Knights of Columbus are asking religious organizations, fellow Knights of Columbus councils, and individuals to say three Hail Mary's (at least) for us:

• one for the victims and their families, • one for the first responders and teachers, • and one for our town to give us strength to support the afflicted.

Then email the name of your organization, the location, the number of people present, and the number of Hail Mary's that were said to [email protected]. We will keep track of the total and who said them. At an appropriate time, we will present this list to the people who so badly need our prayers. We are doing this simply to console the brokenhearted among us. We want to let them know in a concrete way that we are thinking about them, care about them, and are praying for them.

Unfortunately in this situation, there is not much we can offer except our thoughts and prayers. Hopefully this gesture and our prayers will provide some comfort to those who have faced unimaginable sorrow. With over 14,000 Knights of Columbus councils, we are hoping to collect a long list of prayers for our people. Please support this prayer drive and pass it on to your organizations and other councils.

Thank you for your support. Knights of Columbus St. Virgilius Council 185 Newtown, CT

Lecturer's End Notes:

I think the above email from Sandy Hook is a call to action for our council and assembly.
