SHELLHUNTERArtist’s Statement:

I spent my childhood on the beaches of the Black Sea. Out of the millions of shells scat-tered on the sand, I tried to carefully pick out those, which I considered most interesting. Many years have passed, but I continue to search for intriguing shells among the mil-lions of ordinary. I find that in this I am not alone. This search can be compared to how it feels to paint or draw on paper or canvas. There are so many different means by which one can create a work, but one must always choose a means. It is invigorating and addicting to find an interesting choice. Shell hunters everywhere, please continue your search.

The Wind Beneath My Wings

In memoriam of Domenico Munizza who passed away on October 27th, 2008

When the Art Institute moved back into the Park in 1997, I, along with Anabel Mintz, Pat Sullivan, Anna Jenkins, and several others were asked to sit on the Board of Directors. This was just the beginning of my husband Dom’s commitment to the Art Institute.

We were a very needy organization and the Art Director, Kaye D. Benton, asked Dom (very nicely), to build some portable walls for the gallery. He built four or five walls and they have been and indispensible asset to the exhibition space. One time when the gal-lery walls were in very bad shape, Dom got down to his knees and painted the bottom third of the walls around the entire gallery to make it easier and cheaper for the walls to be painted. The he worked up in the gifts shop and built shelves, display cases, and easels. We donated, and he physically installed, the entire sound system. Dom built the storage cubicles in the back room for storing the art work as it comes in for the jurying process. This storage may not be very glamorous, but it is functional! For a temporary fix, he built the partition wall between the executive director’s space and the rest of the of-fice. He helped Kerstin with shelves in her allotted space. He also helped Kerstin rebuild her house, but that’s another story entirely! There were many other things that Dom was asked to do for the Art Institute and he never refused. And then, there was what he did for me … he gave me my art. He gave me my first cam-era. He built my darkroom. But, more than anything, he encouraged me and told me not to take classes, but to learn on my own, because then, my work would truly be “my work”. So many of you knew Dom and you couldn’t help but love the man. He was authentic … and he was the wind beneath my wings.

A small but dedicated group of artists and business owners in North Park are launching a community-wide effort, North Park Nights (NPN), to celebrate local Arts & Culture. North Park Nights is a program of The San Diego Art Institute, non-profit 501c3 organization. As an arts and business district on the cusp of greatness, North Park is experiencing a true renaissance, with new life and activity streaming in daily. The arts are a major part of that vitality, and have continued to thrive in North Park! Explore the diversity of NPN in our unique galleries, shops, and restaurants featuring cultural activities and a variety of visual and performing arts.

Evolving from “Ray at Night”, NPN will continue on the second Saturday of each month through the end of this year. As a broader community collaboration, NPN is focused on increased infusion of the arts in North Park.

Walk our streets, enjoy the galleries and support local artists. Look for future NPN activities throughout the month at www.NorthParkNights.org.
