Letter from the desk of Timothy Field

Dear Members,

SDAI-MOLA has stepped up to produce an invitation-only exhibition, “Colloboration.” This exhibition was born out of a general discussion with three SDAI members—Ellen Dieter, Richard Messenger and Shahla Dorafshan--and the SDAI administration. Kerstin Robers, Andrea Chamberlin and I were asked to participate in an upcoming exhibition, “Movers and Shakers,” made up of portraits of key players in the regional arts community. The creation by three of our artists of a single portrait of our admin team--Kerstin, Andrea and myself—is an example of collaboration on two fronts.

With this germ of collaboration, I felt that there was a real story to be told. Also, the “Collaboration” exhibition will serve as a reminder to our membership that we provide very real opportunities to expand their potential and the nature of their work through the variety of our programs and their networking aspects.

SDAI has always suffered poor representation in the media since we are an organization “in the trenches.” We work with artists from the early stages of their development, producing programs that increase the opportunity for unknown artists to gain well-deserved platforms for exhibiting their art. For reasons like this, we very rarely do themed exhibitions.

“Stripping the Myth”Artist’s Statement:

Myth (mith) n. 1. A popular belief or story that has become associated with a person, institution, or occurrence, especially one considered to illustrate a cultural ideal. 2. A fiction or half-truth, especially one that forms part of an ideology. 3. A fictitious story, person, or thing. In “Stripping the Myth,” I am taking a playful and sometimes dark look at some of the myths that inform our shared experience, asking what is myth, what it is to be myth, and how we incorporate myth in our lives?

Thierry ChatelainSDAI Featured Artist: December 18, 2009 to January 17, 2010

“ A Legacy Exhibition”

Thierry Chatelain1952-2008

Thierry Chatelain (pronounced Terry) studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratif in Paris; he showed at the Knowles Gallery in La Jolla, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Atlantia Gallery in Los Angeles, the Reid Gallery in Carmel and Art-Affair at the Laguna Art Festival, to name a few. He is one of the “Original Six” artists who developed the large body of work for the “East Meets West” project. Chatelain also had work at both Disney and Universal Studios. He was well celebrated for his brilliant command of gouache in his earlier career, translating his sharp edges and brilliant color through the use of oil in the latter part of his life.

Although a bad economy affects organizations like ours dramatically, we are very grateful for the continuing support and collaboration of people like the Spiazzis, Wolfes, Hoffmans, and Wallaces, along with the latter’s extended family in Utah and Idaho. Support from the Fleet family and Foundation, and the San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture, among others, is also key to the continuation of our mission. And of course our membership’s involvement, financially and in so many other ways, is the cornerstone of our success. We look forward to increasing our donations, artist memberships and Friends of the Institute with your help.

Collaboration is exemplified in other ways at SDAI. Although our long-term goal is to have the Board of Directors transition from a hands-on board to a funding board, we are grateful that some of our Board members often devote time and effort in helping our overworked staff. As we strive to increase the efficiency of SDAI at its two locations—Museum of the Living Artist (MOLA) in Balboa Park and the San Diego Art Dept. (SDAD) on Ray Street—we greatly appreciate the collaborative work by donors, members, the Board and staff.

Even this letter, although penned by me, is really a collaborative work, with Kerstin, who makes sure I actually get it done on time; Debby and Claire, who edit it; Jack, who does the layout and graphics; and Marc, who uploads the copy.

One last item: let us all extend a hello and thank you to those we come in contact with during any of our many programs. This courtesy goes a long way in encouraging both our staff and volunteers. Thank you.

Through SDAI’s collaborative partnership with the Japanese Friendship Garden, Paint-Out artists are NOW able to enter the beautiful garden, Free of Charge, and use it as a backdrop for their art creations. Co-Hosted by Maura McHugh and Richard PowersMaura McHugh is currently studying fine art at University of San Diego, majoring in painting. In 2001 she started painting and taking classes at the Athenaeum in La Jolla and studied there under Pat Kelly. Maura has been a participant of the SDAI Paint-Out since the program started in 2003, she is on the SDAI Gathering Committee and often volunteers for SDAI: Museum of the Living Artist. She is a participating artist member of San Diego Art Institute, California Art Club, and Point Loma Artists Association. Not only has Maura’s work been exhibited throughout the San Diego area but her work has also been selected to receive Juror’s Choice honors.

Richard Powers: ”All of my life I have enjoyed nature and all of its beauty which I loved to depict in paintings using various mediums. As a youth during my last two years of grade school I took the Famous Artists Commercial Art correspondence course. Other than this I am pretty much self-taught. I have a studio in my home where I work in oils, watercolors, and mixed media. I find that these mediums lend themselves well to studies in the lighting and colors of my favorite subjects whether it is my dog Shorty, a flower, an interesting landscape or an abandoned building. I belong to the California Art Club, Escondido Art Association, Escondido Arts Partnership, Oil Painters of America, San Diego Art Department and the San Diego Art Institute. I have entered competitions in these organizations and have received several awards.” RichardPowers.com

“About Art” from Artists

John Anthony Auciello’s Choices:Regional Show: “MAN WITH THE STAR” (DIPTYCH)

I chose John Brodie’s work from the regional show because I like the different materials, the different way of hanging the piece. It reminds me of a new modernist style of approaching a painting. The old style of medium on canvas hanging by a wire gets thrown out. A new image is played with a clever way of handling very lightweight material but keeps the look of a weighty painting yet giving it a different look.

One-Foot Show: “ENCROACH”

I chose Guy Lombardo’s work from the One-Foot Show. It is clearly spiritual. There is a definite connection with the primitive, mankind, Jungian archetypes and the spiritual self or Atman. “Encroach” is both provocative and scary. Who wants to see God or the universe? Who is this Shaman looking out at? Is he looking at me particularly, or at everyone at once? The artist Guy Lombardo is the figure and he has a face that makes the whole photograph come alive.

“Man With The Star”

“Encroach”

Baudelaire’s Choice: “REFLECTIONS IN A CANINE MIRROR”

Looking at Jack Salb’s”Street Scene,” a simple, but highly effective, photograph of a brightly painted bar, I was reminded of an amusing incident a couple of years ago. I was poking around in our garage, and emerged with an empty picture frame caught around my neck. My master laughed, called me Rembrandt, and snapped a photo! But I could only wonder: he sees my striking visage every day, why should a frame make such a difference? Should not my face, in a state of nature, seen with his ordinary vision, already be a kind of art?

Art is a gesture that destroys the world of the visible at the same time that it preserves it, and the most powerful art performs this murder the most efficiently. And art itself is not immune from this atrocity. Behind Salb’s photograph is another artist; someone decided to paint that bar in bright shades of blue and orange, and for their own ends, be they aesthetic or commercial. But in Salb’s frame that original gesture is both recreated and transformed; the source acknowledged with a real affection, but with an inevitable repossession. Even the work of god, or of the god of nature, is enfolded into the human imagination. That leaf is food for ants; that leaf is the expression of the same life that is within me; that leaf makes me smile; that leaf must be torn from its surroundings; it must be painted; it must be recreated as something that could never be a leaf. And so we look longingly at Salb’s blue bar. But we remain thirsty. “Street Scene”

General InformationThe San Diego Art Institute’s Museum of the Living Artist features a new exhibition of works by talented Southern California regional artists every four to six weeks in this specially designed 10,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art gallery space. The San Diego Art Institute is dedicated to the advancement of the visual arts through outreach, education and exhibition. The Institute’s mission is to maintain a center for emerging artists and the visual arts in San Diego.

next Poetry & Art Three for $300 Slam at the Museum of the Living Artist.

3 for $300 Slam (http://sandiego-art.org/), a poetry/prose/visual art combination slam for writers, artists and performers, is a poetry/prose competition with a slight twist:

Performers who bring and show visual art connected in some way to their poetry/prose will earn extra points. Performers may also use (and are encouraged to use) artwork hanging in the museum’s current exhibit. Simply pick a painting, and it will be displayed front and center for the audience while you read. Each written piece performed or read must be under three minutes and ten seconds. Winners take home $150 (1st Place), $100 (2nd Place) and $50 (3rd Place).

What is a Poetry Slam? Here is the official word from Poetry Slam, Inc.: “A poetry slam is a competitive event in which poets perform their work and are judged by members of the audience. Typically, the host or another organizer selects the judges, who are instructed to give numerical scores (on a zero to 10 or one to 10 scale) based on the poets’ content and performance.”

The Poetry & Art Series (established in the summer of 2001) at the Museum of the Living Artist is itself both a unique show and a unique venue. Poets and audiences gather amongst the paintings to witness a live collaboration between writers and visual artists.

Poetry & Art, the San Diego Art Institute’s quarterly museum series, gives regional artists an opportunity to express themselves in a variety of forms and styles. Audiences hear poetry and prose in dialogue with painting, photography, sculpture, music and dance. Any featured guests serve not only as entertainment but also as inspiration for developing artists. The free speech event reveals the diversity and importance of the region’s artists.

Our resident Poetry & Art DJ, Gill S.O.T.U., will provide R&B, funk, soul, and there is a new art exhibit on display at every show.

So bring poems and paintings on Wednesday, Nov. 11, and step up to the mic. Or simply come to enjoy the performances. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. For more information, contact Michael Klam at (619) 957-3264 or call the Museum directly, Kerstin Robers at (619) 236-0011. E-mail: [email protected]. ARTISTS TRADING is a new, free, online site where artists are invited to offer their work in trade with other artists. Some art collectors, such as Ann Berchtold, Executive Director, Beyond the Border International Contemporary Art Fair, began collecting through bartering. Berchtold designed websites for artists who really could not afford to pay her. So she accepted art as payment. Others began by buying the relatively inexpensive art of relatively unknown or entirely unknown artists. But for many artists “relatively inexpensive” is still out of reach. This is the reason I started Artists Trading. Artists Trading provides a free, online venue where artists can view and trade art from the comfort of home. Artists are invited to post up to 6 pieces. If two artists are interested in each other’s work, a trade is made. Instructions for submitting art images are on the blog. I cordially invite the artists of SDAI to visit www.artiststrading.blogspot.com and enter the exciting world of art collecting! Hope to see your art there soon! Sandra CoreyArtist Member SDAI
