    The Project:

    Venue:

The branch needs to decide on a venue that best suits the campaign. This venue shouldpreferably be a Shopping Mall or Shopping Centre due to the number of persons who entersuch premises. If this is not possible a community centre or clinic will suffice as a secondarysolution.

Remember to obtain permission beforehand as well as outlining your goals and objectivesfor the campaign. Try to get the Management of the centre involved in the project andexplain the importance of their involvement in such a campaign.

    Equipment:

To fully ensure the success of the campaign this section is up to you as well as theresponsibility of the branch to assess whether they will be competent to do such things asblood pressure monitoring accurately (No students should do this due to risks involved).

    General Equipment:

SAPSF Care Forms Blood Pressure monitors Tape Measures (waist measurement) Weighing Scales Height Measure Tables (and table cloths if needed) Chairs Pens Patient information leaflets (Enquire at various Pharmacies for these)

o Diets (Cholesterol, Diabetes, Hypertension specific etc)o Healthy Lifestyleso Importance of supplementationo Various Health Conditions (Diabetes, Hypertension, Cholesterol etc)o ...and any other you wish to have

    Free give-aways (i.e. apples etc)

Generally make sure that there is enough equipment to facilitate the Campaign as you wantto minimise the patient wait.

    Volunteers:

To run the campaign successfully you will need some volunteers to assist in the effectiverunning of the campaign.

    Volunteers include:

Pharmacy Students (Not recommended to do testing) Pharmacists (Academic Staff or any other Pharmacists in your region) Pharmacies

o Partner up with any interested Pharmacies Any other persons you deem fit

    The Event:

The general event framework is to assess the health levels of persons and to do a healthinterview with them (SAPSF Care Forms). This allows one to see where there are differencesin the Patients understanding of any conditions they might have, the treatment of it and

how to effectively manage themselves. It also allows you to identify possible risk factors aPatient may have i.e. Raised Blood Pressure.

In terms of simple examinations one can perform these include Blood Pressure Monitoring

(persons doing this must be competent and trained adequately) and BMI Measurements(Height and Weight Measurements). Reasons for not including any invasive tests are for thereason of any incidents which may occur and risks towards those involved in the project andto the patient.

Other things to be included at the event is counselling on expired medication and how todiscard of them appropriately. You may include a medicine drop off bin during theCampaign and invite patients to drop any expired medication off in these bins for discarding. You may want to take this into the community as well and go door to door during theCampaign period.

As a branch carrying out the project feel free to make the Campaign your own. Ideas includethe SANBS for blood typing in your area, eye testing, eating competitions or even inviteCANSA to do a shave-a-thon and hairspray event etc. The event is yours and up to you to co-

ordinate and make a success of it.

Please note when to refer patients and do so under the supervision of a Pharmacist, alsotake note in terms of Pharmacovigilance in reporting any adverse effects.
