Award recipients honored on Charter DayOn Feb. 13, The University of Montana celebrated the 120th anniversary of its chartering by the Montana Legislature. The annual Charter Day awards ceremony included remarks from President Royce Engstrom and Provost Perry Brown. True to tradition, Missoula Mayor John Engen provided the official proclamation of the University of Montana Day.

UMAA Event Highlights

Staff of the Alumni Relations office sent our Big Sky Conference winners off to the NCAA tournament in style. Congratulations to both on fabulous seasons. Go Griz!

Owen Sirrs, whose talk titled “Afghanistan: Where Do We Go from Here?” drew a large crowd during the Great Falls U to You series, will speak again at Helena College on April 25.

Many thanks to all the alumni and friends who joined President Royce Engstrom and Mary Engstrom, UM Foundation President and CEO Laura Brehm and Alumni Director Bill Johnston in Palm Desert.

This year’s Community Lecture Series – “Russia on the Oval” – featured captivating lectures on folk art, the Bolshevik Revolution, Soviet propaganda art, the changing higher education system and more.

“I want to thank all of the lecturers who spent so much time and effort in preparation and presentation,” said Linda Gillison, who helps organize the series and introduces the speakers each year. “One person commented that the lecturers seemed to enjoy lecturing to this community group as much as in a more scholarly, specialist venue.”

After the final lecture attendees enjoyed traditional Russian delicacies prepared by UM Dining Services, including black bread, borscht, and deviled eggs topped with a dab of caviar.

Missoula Community Access Television (MCAT) will broadcast video recordings of the series on Channel 7. April 1 through May 11, one lecture will appear each Monday at 8 p.m., and a repeat of the Monday broadcast on Saturday at 9 p.m. If you miss these broadcasts, the videos later will be available online. Watch for a YouTube link on the UMAA website.

Tradition begins here Since its launch in 2012, UMAA’s Student Alumni Association has been growing steadily. A hardworking, enthusiastic bunch, this year’s members have tabled at the University Center, invited guest speakers, and sponsored recruitment and SAA awareness activities on the Oval.

On April 24, students will participate in lawn games and sidewalk chalking, and enjoy live music and treats.

On May 1, Kevin Furey ’06, M.P.A. ’09, a Foreign Service officer and Civil Affairs officer in the U.S. Army Reserves, will speak to an audience of students, members of the House of Delegates and Missoula community members about diplomacy and the U.S. State Department. Following his current tour as consular officer in Santo Domingo, Kevin will be posted in Belgrade, Serbia, as a political officer.

With the help of generous alumni like Kevin, SAA gives students the chance to learn from experts working in their fields, explore career opportunities and develop strong networking partnerships. By connecting students with Alumni Association members and activities while they’re still enrolled at UM, we hope to keep them active and engaged long after graduation.

Alumni Gathering in KumamotoFor the past 30 years, the prefecture of Kumamoto, Japan, and the state of Montana have maintained a vibrant sister-state relationship. To mark the anniversary, a 14-member delegation from the Japan Friendship Club of Montana travelled to Kumamoto City in early October. Delegates included Teresa Branch, vice president for student affairs; Effie Koehn, director of foreign student and scholar services; Julie Cahill, M.Ed. ’95, international admissions counselor; and Mika Watanabe, M.A. ’01, student disability services coordinator.

The anniversary celebration also was a memorable reunion for University of Montana alums in the area. Organized by Mako Sakaguchi, Montana’s Japan Trade Office representative, with the help of Jiro Murayama ’97 and Kentaro Hara ’00, the Oct. 6 gathering was held at Murayama’s Oden Restaurant.

On the way to Kumamoto, a smaller alumni gathering took place at a Japanese restaurant in Tokyo. It was organized by Yoshiyuki Shimizu ’98, president of the Tokyo UM Alumni Association, and hosted by Yoko Takeuchi ’88, president of Human Synergistics International.
