He loved the bucolic countryside o EastCherokee so much that he bought a picturesque arm here, moved three houses tothe arm and created an idyllic liestyle that many dream o, but ew actualize. I

Tough the economics are changing and the technology andpharmacology continue to evolve, caring or patients is still much thesame as it has been or decades. A patient comes in with a problemthat needs to be solved, and my job is to listen to my patient and nda solution to their problem, says Dr. William Porter, a physician at

WellStar Family Medicine in Bridgemill. Porter was a systems analysthe received his bachelors degree in mathematics and computer sciencerom Oglethorpe University in Atlantawhen he realized that hepreerred and needed contact with people instead o machines. Sohe decided to apply his problem-solving skills to medicine, went tomedical school and became a doctor.

And he is glad he did. Easing patients ears and helpingthem get well is so rewarding, he arms. You can see it intheir eyes when they know that you have helped them andthat you really care. Tats my reward. At his Bridgemillpractice, Porter, who is board certied in amily medicine, treats preteens, senior citizens and all ages in between. Oneo the aspects o amily practice that he enjoys is the varietyo conditions and diseases he gets to treat. No two days arethe same. I never know what the day will bring. I see 25 to 32

patients most days, and do everything rom routine physicalsand chronic disease management to gynecology exams andminor skin surgeries. Porter says he has the best o both

worldsa chance to diagnose and treat a variety o conditionsand a chance to build relationships with amilies he has treatedor years and with patients who have chronic illnesses thathe regularly helps them manage. Unlike surgeons or otherspecialties, in amily medicine our relationships are ongoingand can last a long time.

Although treating patients who have a variety o conditionsis interesting, it is also challenging. Staying current on newinnovations in medicine is a lie-long eort. I routinely have a

stack o medical journals and articles that I read every monthto stay on top o what is new, Porter says. Newer treatmentsinclude a range o minimally invasive surgical procedures oreverything rom heart to abdominal procedures. Te recoverytime is oten insignicant. I marvel at that, he notes. Andimproved drugs or prevention and treating chronic conditionsthat can lead to serious illness such as diabetes or high bloodpressure are increasing lie spans.

Unortunately, Porter notes, he is not seeing innovationswhen it comes to treating persistent inections. Te overuseo antibiotics has led to resistant strains o bacteria. Its scary.

Tere doesnt seem to be many new eective antibiotics beingdeveloped. I would love to see more innovations coming downthe pipe in this eld.

What health tips does he oer? Good nutrition, he arms,is the key to wellness. I people dont eat a good balanceddiet rich in resh vegetables and ruits, there is no amount omedicine or surgery, or other treatment that I can render that

will make up or that. Very oten when I see someone that isrequently sick, I nd out that they are not eating anythingclose to a healthy balanced diet. It doesnt take a degree innutrition. I you can look down at your plate and see ourcolors, then you have a pretty balanced meal.

Porter notes that it is also important or patients to see adoctor when they think something is wrong. Dont ignoresymptoms and dont put o seeing a doctor. No problem istoo small or too big. And you need to nd a doctor that youtrust and can be completely honest with. Its essential that youare comortable telling your primary care physician everything.I you dont trust your doctor, you should probably nd adierent doctor.

wanted to learn as much as I could. While other labcompounders were taking their breaks, I was in thelab smelling all the essential oils and aroma chemicals

plan to stay on track with your fnancial goals.

    Dont Follow the Herd

Teres a theory on Wall Street that goes something likethis: I you ollow the crowd and buy the hot investment

o the day, chances are youll be scooping up shares whenmost others are about to sell. Tis natural herd instincto buying when everyone is euphoric may mean youveentered the game too late and are buying at the wrong time.

Investors oten jump in at the wrong time becausetheyre worried about what others are doing instead oocusing on good old-ashioned undamentals such as acompanys earning potential and its management.

History continually shows us that when individualschoose investments without a prudent basis or doing so,they oten wind up losing money that can take many yearsto recover. We saw this rom 1998-2000, when investors

drove the NASDAQ composite over 5,000 -- only to seeit all to less than 2,000 over the ollowing year.

Generally when individuals avoid investments becausethe popular thinking is to steer clear o them, opportunitiesare oten overlooked. We saw this in early 1982, wheninterest rates were high and companies had a diculttime impressing analysts with their earning potential. Tatperiod proved to be the beginning o a bull market thatlasted more than teen years.

GOOD ADVICEIn response to market downturns, some investors shit a

greater percentage o their assets to liquid investments. imeand again, this strategy has also proven to be a mistake.

Keep in mind that, over its history, the stock market hasexperienced nearly twice as many bullish periods as bearishperiods. And while past perormance is no guarantee outure investment results, the stock market has bouncedback rom every major market downturn to date.

When times get tough or stocks, we generally recommendthat you maintain your condence in their long-termgrowth potential and use these simple strategies:

Reduceyourcostbyaveragingdown.Ifoneofyourstocks declines in value, but the underlying business stillappears sound, consider buying more shares. You willreduce your overall cost basis; you do, o course, increaseyour losses should the stock value continue to all.

Staydiversied.Keepyourassetsspreadamonginvestments which have historically perormed dierentlyunder the same market conditions.

Stayfocusedonyourlong-termgoal.Donttrytoavoidthe downturn by jumping out o the market.

It was my privilege and honor to be a part o naming the JusticeCenter or Frank. No one could be more deserving. Hes beenthe heart and soul o the court system in Cherokee County ora generation, says Johnston. Frank is a tremendous role model.

What I admire most about him is that in almost 40 years as oneo the most important and powerul people in Cherokee County, hes lived modestly and ocused his abilities and energy on helpingothers. Hes never sought anything or himsel, including anyrecognition or his accomplishments and service. Hes actuallyembarrassed by the accolades hes receiving now. Tats just thekind o true servant he is.

In act, Mills acknowledges the honor modestly. I am notsure I deserve it, but I am incredibly humbled and honored bythat, he arms.

Te Cherokee County Chamber o Commerce recently honoredMills as well. What an honor to bestow the title o First Citizeno Cherokee County on Judge Frank C. Mills III. Te mostprestigious award presented by the Cherokee County Chamber,

this accolade is designed to recognize a Cherokee County residentor their signicant meritorious service to the community, saysPam Carnes, Chamber president and CEO.He is deserving o this recognition, not only or his service to thecommunity through elected oce, but also or his service to theBoy Scouts o America, Leadership Cherokee and the communityas a whole.

Mills says he never planned on spending three decades in publicservice. I started as a district attorney, and when District AttorneyButch Holcomb died, I was appointed to replace him. Not longater that, Judge Marion Pope was appointed to the Court o

Appeals, and I was appointed to ll his position as a judge. Aterthat, one thing kind o led to another.

During his many years o public service, Mills has received manysuch notable honors including: Distinguished District Attorney

Award rom the Prosecuting Attorneys Council in 1979, JusticeRobert Benham Public Service Award in 1999 and was the statesnominee or the American Bar Associations Judicial Excellence

Award in 2003, Outstanding Young Man o America or CherokeeCounty in 1982 by the Jaycees; Volunteer o the Year in 2004 byCherokee FOCUS; Light o Hope Award in 2011 rom CASACherokee, and the Jean Harris Volunteer o the Year Award by theRotary Club o Canton in 2012.

He is quick to share the honors with people who have workedalong with him. I have been very ortunate to have always

worked with excellent, devoted co-workers. I am not just sayingthat, he says. Cherokee County has been very ortunate to havehad dedicated sheris, clerks, district attorneys and many otheragencies I do not want to leave outall competent and helpul.

People like to joke about lawyers, and so do Iand in act, so domost lawyers. But the Bar in Cherokee County is also excellent, and no-nonsense. Tey work hard, le appropriate motions anddo not waste time with some o the rivolous stu you oten readabout in other places. People should read the newspapers every dayand see what is going on in other communities, and thank theirlucky stars or the court, law enorcement personnel and even thelawyers who are currently serving them, he arms.

In addition to the aromatic candles, Ray hascreated distinct natural, moisture-rich, ragrantsoaps. My daughter had extremely painuleczema, so rather than use the steroids the doctors

were recommending, I started researching anatural way to help her skin and we developedthese soaps, Ray explains. We make our soapsusing the traditional cold process method and useolive, coconut, palm and shea butter as the baseo all our soaps. We use only essential oils along

When I asked Annie to be editor or the second bookabook on amily she looked over my stories and said it seemeda little lopsided with only a mans perspective. So we decidedto collaborate. In this case, there was the added element o me puttinginto words or the irst time my take on amily events asrelated by Michael. Mostly the dierences were just unny, but occasionally they were annoying to Michael or even a littlepainul. Writing things down is enlightening! Ann notes.

Editing the book truly became a amily project with parents, siblings and even their sons weighing in. My mother and oneo my sisters especially oered many editorial suggestions. Oursons, yler and Joseph, have both read the book, reluctantly.

Actually, they both surprised us with some pretty good judgmentcalls and suggestions or a ew changesmostly along the lineso how to make something unnier, Ann explains.

Te quest or healthy cuisine has been a roller coaster ridein the last decadewith starts and stops and twisty turns thatsometimes double back. Coee is bad, coee is good. Nuts arebad, nuts are good. Alcohol is bad, but wine is good. Fat is bad...unless it is the good at. Coconut oil can kill you...or heal you. Telow-at diet was replaced with the bacon-is-good-or-you, high-protein diet and it seems that a small piece o ormerly orbiddendark chocolate is now considered healthier than a multivitamin.

    In the Boy Scout Tradition

Frank Mills has been a devoted Boy Scout leader ever since

his son rst joined Cub Scouts in the 80s. He has served as

assistant scoutmaster, unit commissioner, aquatics instructor

and district chairman. Boy Scouts of America has honored Mills

with the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award given by the

Scouts for service to youth, and the Whitney M. Young award for

    distinguished service to low-income youth.

Commissioner Harry Johnston shared this story that exemplies

Mills ingenuity, devotion and diligence: The Boy Scouts hadbeen given a large utility pole to use as the main beam or a

ootbridge over a large creek on the trail network they built and

maintain along the river just west o Canton. The pole had been

delivered to the site, but the Scouts had no way to get it into

position across the creek. Frank lived nearby, and when heavy

rains and possible fooding were predicted, he tied one end

o the pole to a tree by the creek. When the area fooded, he

paddled his canoe to the site, pulled the other end o the now-

foating pole across the creek, and tied it to a tree on the other

side. When the waters receded, the pole was let straddling the

creek, ready to be jacked into its exact position.

mentality. By that I mean in a lieboat, i one person moves ordoes something, it aects everyone else in the boat. In CherokeeCounty, we are still mindul o that and try to check with eachother beore we try something new. It makes or better workingrelationships and morale among everyone, Mills adds.

Mills says that one o the lessons he learned during his longtenure as judge and wants to pass on to his successors is mundane, but important. I hope my successors pay heed. I used to beknown or holding court at all hours. I have truly run in anothercounty until 4 a.m. In Cherokee and other counties, it was notunusual to go until midnight. Tat was or a reason. I started in amulti-county circuit. We did not have the luxury o coming backto the same county the next day, or even the next week because

we would have court scheduled in another county. Witnesses andparties also may have fown in rom another state, he explains.Tere is great pressure to nish and not have to come back. Ido not like to make parties who have waited all day come back. But there is a physical toll or that on everyone, even me. A ewyears back I had a blood clot in my leg. Te doctor told me that

condition is common or airline pilots, judges, and anyone whosits or long hours. I hope my successors will look ater themselvesbetter, he urges.

As Mills transitions to the next phase o his lie, he says thathe is looking orward to less administrative duties and moreScouting adventures and time with amily. Ater logging 30 yearson the bench, rendering countless legal decisions, and garneringhighest honors rom his colleagues and community, Mills seemsmodestly content.

My late sister-in-law used to say, Working together or thegood o all. I hope people will remember me or that, he adds.

writing, as in his oce, he likes to remindpeople that confict and problems in lie arenormal, Ann says. We kept the subjectmatter in this book on the light side, but still,I wondered about showing the requencyo confict between our kids, and between

Michael and me. Confict is more interestingthan sweetness and light, but I hope peoplecan see past the ghting to the love!

Ann says that the title o the book,A MismatchMade in Heaven, comes rom the idea thatpeople who are dierent rom each other can betogether loving and sometimes disagreeing witheach other while maintaining a sense o purposeabout the lie lessons they are learning.

Tats also the take-awaymessage o the book...

God put us here togetheror a reason. Its a hopeul,

humorous message. Were all part o the

human race, and eventhe painul parts o lie

And on most Sunday aternoons rom May throughOctober, there is a polo match to be played. One o therst things Cashin did when he moved to the arm wasto lay out a polo eld in one o the pastures. Since then, hes taught hundreds o horse enthusiasts to play polo, hosted hundreds o matches, raised millions o dollarsor charities and played more chukkers (periods o playin polo) then he can count. Oten called the sport okings, polo is played while riding a pony, although theterm pony is purely traditional and the mount is actuallya ull-sized horse. Cashin looks orward to the weekly

Te Sunday polo matches are generally open to thepublicthere is a $20 ee or parking. Guests are invitedto bring a blanket and their ood and beverage o choiceand experience an aternoon o polo. Sometimes the polomatches are sponsored by national and regional charities
