Jack Cashin, 87, likes to tell people that he was born in the North, but that hissoul was born in the South...and it was right about the time he discovered the rollinghills o Cherokee County in the early 70s. He loved the bucolic countryside o EastCherokee so much that he bought a picturesque arm here, moved three houses tothe arm and created an idyllic liestyle that many dream o, but ew actualize. I

Tough the economics are changing and the technology andpharmacology continue to evolve, caring or patients is still much thesame as it has been or decades. A patient comes in with a problemthat needs to be solved, and my job is to listen to my patient and nda solution to their problem, says Dr. William Porter, a physician at

Porter was a systems analysthe received his bachelors degree in mathematics and computer sciencerom Oglethorpe University in Atlantawhen he realized that hepreerred and needed contact with people instead o machines. And he is glad he did. Easing patients ears and helpingthem get well is so rewarding, he arms. You can see it intheir eyes when they know that you have helped them andthat you really care. Tats my reward. At his Bridgemillpractice, Porter, who is board certied in amily medicine,treats preteens, senior citizens and all ages in between. Oneo the aspects o amily practice that he enjoys is the varietyo conditions and diseases he gets to treat. No two days arethe same. I never know what the day will bring. I see 25 to 32

patients most days, and do everything rom routine physicalsand chronic disease management to gynecology exams andminor skin surgeries. Porter says he has the best o both

worldsa chance to diagnose and treat a variety o conditionsand a chance to build relationships with amilies he has treatedor years and with patients who have chronic illnesses thathe regularly helps them manage. Unlike surgeons or otherspecialties, in amily medicine our relationships are ongoingand can last a long time.

Although treating patients who have a variety o conditionsis interesting, it is also challenging. Staying current on newinnovations in medicine is a lie-long eort. I routinely have a

stack o medical journals and articles that I read every monthto stay on top o what is new, Porter says. Newer treatmentsinclude a range o minimally invasive surgical procedures oreverything rom heart to abdominal procedures. Te recoverytime is oten insignicant. I marvel at that, he notes. Andimproved drugs or prevention and treating chronic conditionsthat can lead to serious illness such as diabetes or high bloodpressure are increasing lie spans.

Unortunately, Porter notes, he is not seeing innovationswhen it comes to treating persistent inections. Te overuseo antibiotics has led to resistant strains o bacteria. Its scary.

Tere doesnt seem to be many new eective antibiotics beingdeveloped. I would love to see more innovations coming downthe pipe in this eld.

What health tips does he oer? Good nutrition, he arms,is the key to wellness. I people dont eat a good balanceddiet rich in resh vegetables and ruits, there is no amount omedicine or surgery, or other treatment that I can render that

will make up or that. Very oten when I see someone that isrequently sick, I nd out that they are not eating anythingclose to a healthy balanced diet. It doesnt take a degree innutrition. I you can look down at your plate and see ourcolors, then you have a pretty balanced meal.

Porter notes that it is also important or patients to see adoctor when they think something is wrong. Dont ignoresymptoms and dont put o seeing a doctor. No problem istoo small or too big. And you need to nd a doctor that youtrust and can be completely honest with. Its essential that youare comortable telling your primary care physician everything.I you dont trust your doctor, you should probably nd adierent doctor.

During his many years o public service, Mills has received manysuch notable honors including: Distinguished District Attorney

When I asked Annie to be editor or the second bookabook on amily she looked over my stories and said it seemeda little lopsided with only a mans perspective. So we decidedto collaborate. For all the readers who have asked, What didyour wie say about HA article?...now they will know. Headds that the humorous pen and ink illustrations by his wieadd an extra dimension to the stories. I just wish shed givenme more hair.

Michael and I have been working on the book project sincelast June. It started with me in the editor role only, as I wasor his irst book he Eyes Dont See. We already knew thesubject o the second book would be amily and marriage.But ater looking over Michaels stories, I began to think thebook would be more enlightening i it included the womansperspective, too, Ann explains.

Michael and I settled on a hesaid/she said ormat...or every

story Michael tells about us or thekids, theres a story rom me aboutthe same subject, and sometimes Ishare an opposite point o view!

Ann says that having Michael edit her stories was occasionallya painul process or both o them. I ound out that shapinga story rom scratch is a lot dierent rom just shaping itup. In this case, there was the added element o me puttinginto words or the irst time my take on amily events asrelated by Michael. Mostly the dierences were just unny,but occasionally they were annoying to Michael or even a littlepainul. Writing things down is enlightening! Ann notes.

Editing the book truly became a amily project with parents,siblings and even their sons weighing in. My mother and oneo my sisters especially oered many editorial suggestions. Oursons, yler and Joseph, have both read the book, reluctantly.

Actually, they both surprised us with some pretty good judgmentcalls and suggestions or a ew changesmostly along the lineso how to make something unnier, Ann explains.

he book begins with stories showing the culture clashbetween Michaels and Anns very dierent amilies. hereader is invited to see how the relationship works out incommunicating, raising the kids, and in shaping the childrens

values and religious belies. I wasnt sure about how much toinclude o our ups and downs through the years. Michael hasalways related our amily struggles in his stories. As a doctor,hes listened to thousands o patients over the years. In his

In the Boy Scout Tradition

Frank Mills has been a devoted Boy Scout leader ever since

his son rst joined Cub Scouts in the 80s. He has served as

assistant scoutmaster, unit commissioner, aquatics instructor

and district chairman. Boy Scouts of America has honored Mills

with the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award given by the

Scouts for service to youth, and the Whitney M. Young award for

distinguished service to low-income youth.

Commissioner Harry Johnston shared this story that exemplies

Mills ingenuity, devotion and diligence: The Boy Scouts hadbeen given a large utility pole to use as the main beam or a

ootbridge over a large creek on the trail network they built and

maintain along the river just west o Canton. The pole had been

delivered to the site, but the Scouts had no way to get it into

position across the creek. Frank lived nearby, and when heavy

rains and possible fooding were predicted, he tied one end

o the pole to a tree by the creek. When the area fooded, he

Oten called the sport okings, polo is played while riding a pony, although theterm pony is purely traditional and the mount is actuallya ull-sized horse. Cashin looks orward to the weekly

matches where he gets to team up with his riends andamilygrandchildren included nowand play thisancient game. According to the U.S. Polo Association,Cashin has the distinction o being the oldest activeplayer in the country.

Pasta PuttanescaIngredients:

3 Tbls extra-virgin olive oil

7 cloves o garlic, chopped

1 tsp red pepper fakes

1 tin o fat anchovies, drained

3 Tbls capers

30 pitted black olives, chopped

1 32 oz can o crushed tomatoes

1 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes

Salt and pepper to season

2 handuls o resh chopped parsley

1 lb o spaghetti, cooked to al dente

Grated parmesan

Directions:

Heat a large rying pan over medium heat, add oil, garlic, anchovies,

and red pepper fakes. Saute mixture until anchovies melt into oil and

garlic is tender. Add olives, capers, tomatoes, pepper and parsley.

Bring sauce to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.

Pour over pasta and enjoy!!
