It will be an experience you do not want to miss. Conference is time forall members of NABSW to come together as family and empower eachother so that we can take it back to our communities and continue the

work of ujima in our communities. It is also a great time for students who

are interested in becoming more involved, to take on leadership roles, participate in the newly revised Sankofa project, or join a nationalcommittee to make more connections within the organization. If you havenot submitted a nomination form to hold a national position within theoffice of Student Affairs, you can do so at conference, please look for anyOSA officer. ternally, you might comment upon

    new procedures or improvements

to the business. Sales figures or

earnings will show how your busi-

    ness is growing.

Some newsletters include a columnthat is updated every issue, for

instance, an advice column, a book

review, a letter from the president,

or an editorial. You can also profile

    new employees or top customers

    or vendors.

This story can fit 100-150 words.

The subject matter that appears in

    newsletters is virtually endless. You

can include stories that focus on

    current technologies or innovations

    in your field.

You may also want to note business

or economic trends, or make pre-

    dictions for your customers or

    clients.

    Hotep Family!

As we prepare for Jacksonville, I hope you are preparing to bring ve essenals with you: (1) your love

for our African culture & heritage (2) your appete for knowledge (3) your networking skills and busi-

ness cards (4) plenty of energy and last but certainly not least (5) your commitment to OSA and

    NABSW!

Did you know, our organizaon does not receive federal funds because we are an organizaon ex-

clusive to people of African descent? We understand that as social workers, collaboraon is neces-

sary but more importantly, we acknowledge that family meengs are for family. What are you sayingAdvisor Brown? I am saying, when you have a family meeng, you do not include those people who

are not a part of your immediate family and/or do not know or understand the issues up for discus-

sion. We see NABSW the same way! When we come together as family, it is to address those issues,

circumstances, and societal ills that aect people of African descent (people who look like us). At

conference, you will see that the workshops, symposiums, and funcons are all African centered.

President Benton once said a river that loses its source dries up, African proverb. As a people, we

must connue to learn more and more about our culture and more importantly culvate that

knowledge and take it back to our communies (Sankofa). We all should be thirsty to learn more and

more about those things which are near and dear to us. If its research, plan to nd someone who

can share with you, knowledge in an area of interest to you. And (possibly or), conference presenters

may be able to point you in the direcon of other researchers and resources to aid you in gathering

more knowledge in your area of focus.

Many of us have been guilty of going to an event and leaving our business cards at home. Let thismessage be a reminder to you; be sure to bring your business cards! If you do not already have some,

be sure to visit your school print shop or your local Kinkos to have cards made. It doesnt have to be

anything complex; your name, contact informaon, major, and area of interest will do. At the OSA

recepon, you will have an opportunity to meet new people and exchange business cards. Confer-

ence is not the place to be shy (if you come across any of us we wont allow it-lol) but its the me to

learn who you are in the midst of. NABSW is a reciprocal organizaon; we need informaon and

experse to ow both ways. Believe me, if you want to work, we have plenty available for you to

    do.

In order for any organizaon to thrive, a high level of energy and commitment must be present. We

look forward to seeing high energy at the Day of Service, within the workshops, at our events and at

the dance! In a nutshell, we have planned a week of acvies to get you energized, keep you

movated, and to get us all ready to connue the work in our respecve communies. Earlier in this

message I quoted President Bentons reference to the African proverb a river that loses its sourcedries up; we do not expect that happen because weve got the source-come to conference!

    In the spirit of Harambee,

A team of second year MSW students (Brandi Shine, Breanna Kelly,Brittney Adams, Franci Frazier and Tiffany Person) from Georgia State Univer-sity in Atlanta, GA have been working hard to engage the community in disasterpreparedness. The team is being supervised by the National ABSW DisasterPreparedness Committee. The team is conducting workshops in the metro At-lanta area, educating the Black community on the importance of being preparedfor natural and man-made disasters. This semester they will have completedfour workshops and trained over 120 community members. The team is pre-senting the details of their experience, at the 45th Annual NABSW Conferenceon Thursday April 3, during the morning symposium.

The student Disaster Preparedness Team has incorporated various so-cial media outlets into their project. OSA IS PROUD TO INTRODUCE TO SOME AND RE-ESTABLISH

    FOR OTHERS:

SANKOFA DEFINED: originated in Ghana from the Akan language, Sankofa means to go

back and take or taking past lessons from our history to guide the present and future.

The primary goal of the Sankofa Mentoring Project (SMP) is to foster relaonships be-

tween a pool of experienced professionals within the Naonal Associaon of Black SocialWorkers and new members of the organizaon. Through this partnership, emerging lead-

ers are able to grow and develop personally and professionally with the guidance and

leadership of seasoned members of the organizaon. Seasoned members are referred to

as mentors and the emerging leaders are mentees. By establishing reciprocal relaon-

ships, the Sankofa Mentoring Project enables NABSW to connue its commitment of up-

    liing our communies.

Opmiscally, we look to local chapters who are interested in the SMP and ask that you

begin to idenfy members willing to parcipate and who you believe would benet most.

CALLING ALL CANDIDATES!We also encourage acve, dues-paid student members to parcipate in this years elec-

on of Naonal Ocers! Please contact OSA Parliamentarian, Shawn Johnson at

[email protected] for more informaon. You must be present for the 45th

    Annual

Naonal Conference in Jacksonville, Florida April 2-6, 2013 to parcipate in the elecon.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU IN
