Students are sometimes given the opportunity to work through conflict issues together (if students and/or parents feel comfortable doing so) to help restore relationships. Students are encouraged to stand up for others and speak up if they see their fellow student being unfairly treated. The bystander has a powerful role to play in intervening in these situations, and students are taught skills on how to respond as a bystander. Sometimes students are exposed to inappropriate behaviour of others through online sources. Due to the nature of people to be bolder online than they would ever be in real life, there is a risk of children being exposed to increased disrespect online.

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING St Anthony’s have registered to be part of the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence this Friday March 16. This annual day provides a focus for schools who want to say Bullying. No Way! and to strengthen their everyday messages that bullying and violence at our school are not okay at any time. We will be acknowledging this day by inviting students on Friday, to come with Orange clothing (shirt, shorts, dress, - sun smart clothing, socks and/or hair accessories – please no hair colouring). It’s our school’s way of promoting the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. Details about the national day as well as practical resources and information for teachers, parents and students are available on the Bullying. No Way! SUPPORT FOR POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS AT ST ANTHONY'S from our Guidance Counsellor Mrs Kathy Casley

The upcoming National Day Against Bullying and Prime Minister’s correspondence with all Principals provides an opportunity to reflect on helpful approaches for supporting and promoting respectful relationships at our school.

At St Anthony's we strive every day for positive interactions with others. This not only relates to student to student relationships, but the interactions between adults and students, as well as between parents and staff within our school community. Respectful interactions are modelled and explicitly taught, and situations of stress or conflict provide opportunity for reflection and for learning about more appropriate ways of interacting.

When staff are aware of the concerns relating to relationship conflicts, students receive support to assist them in understanding the impact they are having on others, and remind them about the expectations of being a member of the St Anthony's community. Students and staff work together towards a positive solution for all involved. Sometimes students may need time away from regular school activities to reflect on these issues.

At St Anthony's we believe it is important to equip students with the skills they need to reduce the impact of inappropriate behaviour targeted towards them. The following provides an example of some of the approaches taken, at times, to reduce the impact of such behaviour:

Building resilience - helping students to cope with set-backs. Understanding that when bad things happen, the uncomfortable feeling doesn't last forever. Students also learn that they have the skills to be able to recover from set-backs, and what these skills are.

Students are encouraged to come up with their own solutions to day-to-day problems. This empowers them to be able to cope with set-backs, and know that they have the personal resources to tackle stressful situations if they do arise.

Students learn about assertiveness, and how to respond in a calm, confident and respectful manner in stressful situations.

Students learn about the people in their 'safety network' and times where they may need to access one of these people. Students are encouraged, if they have a significant problem, to keep telling someone until another person takes notice.

Students are encouraged to always talk with an adult who can help work through the situation with them, if there are issues of significant conflict.

It is important for parents to closely monitor use of online media or messaging applications, to regularly check in with children about who they are messaging, and the content of these interactions. The following websites provide parents with a range of information and resources about childhood relationship matters:

Australian Government Bullying No Way! Website https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/WhatIsBullying The safety and wellbeing of all students is valued by all members of our St Anthony's community. If you have any questions or concerns in relation to this information, please see a member of our staff.

ADOPT-A-COP VISIT Last week we met and welcomed our new school adopt-a-cop (Plain Clothes) Senior Constable Alex Fergusson visited and shared important messages regarding safe and inclusive behaviour and cyber safety. Alex is part of our St Anthony’s family (Dad of Will Year 1). Alex presented two sessions – Prep – Year 3 and then Year 4 – Year 6. It was great to have Alex speak to the students and we look forward to him visiting throughout the year.

SCHOOL DISCO Our P & F coordinated a school disco last Friday night. I would like to congratulate the P & F and all the people who volunteered their assistance in the preparation, during and clean up of the night. I found the night to be very well run and a fun night for all. A great way to start the weekend.

GALA DAY – YEAR 5 & YEAR 6 Next Tuesday March 20 our Yr 5 and Yr 6 students will be involved in a sport Gala Day involving Netball, Touch Football and Soccer. The purpose of the day is for full participation of the students to be involved in a sport competing against over 10 schools from the local area. Thank you to the staff for training the teams in preparation for this event.

CARPARK SAFETY: PARKING ON THE GRASSED AREA IN ST ANTHONY’S DRIVE IS PROHIBITED There are clear signs marking the area at the front of the school carpark (St Anthony’s Drive) as a no standing zone. This includes the grassed footpath. Please do not park on the footpath as council patrols will issue fines accordingly.

It is also a matter of safety as cars leaving our school carpark have difficulty seeing if there is any traffic coming from St Anthony’s Drive. We have also had accounts of near misses with pedestrians. We ask for everyone's cooperation in this matter.

APRE NEWS - Mrs Kellie Jacobsen

Dear Families, I would like to thank all of the students, families and staff that attended our Flinders Parish Involvement Mass on Sunday. I had an overwhelming number of students wanting to participate by completing jobs for our mass. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the many blessings the year has given us already and to pray for the year ahead. The message in the gospel was that God is forever merciful and forgiving. Father Emmanuel also urged us to be kind to ourselves, to forgive our wrong doings and let go of past wrongs. We continue to pray for those students in our school community that are completing the sacrament of Reconciliation.

Last week Father Emmanuel visited our Year Five students to explain the Holy Spirit and speak about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. This is the Religion unit currently being studied by the Year 5 children. He shared with the students how the Holy Spirit guides us in our lives and the relationship of the Trinity.

This connects not only with the Religion being studied in Year 5 but also to Saint Patrick’s Day this weekend. Saint Patrick taught the Irish people about the three persons in One God. He used the shamrock to symbolise the relationship between God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Irish communities remember Saint Patrick’s Day throughout the world on the 17th March. He is remembered for his love and faith in God.

PROJECT COMPASSION We have 3 more activities planned to raise money for Project Compassion. This Wednesday we will hold another snow cone day. All snow cones are $2. The last snow cone day raised $700, we are hoping to match this amount. Parent volunteers are needed from 12:30. We have raised $1 000 dollars so far for Project Compassion. Thank you for your generosity!

CLASS MASS CHANGE This week both 4J and 4M will be attending the Parish Mass at 9am. All families are welcome. There will be no class mass on the following week.

DATE CLAIMERS: Wednesday March 14 - 3M Prayer Parade and Snow Cone Fundraiser $2

Thursday March 15 - 4J and 4M Class Mass.

God Bless

Kellie

2018 International Competitions and Assessments (ICAS)

The University of NSW is once again conducting the International Competitions and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) in 2017. As with previous years, St Anthony’s will be participating in the English (Years 3-6), Mathematics (Years 3-6), Science (Years 3-6) and Technology (Years 3-6) subject areas.

Using data obtained from class results and Brisbane Catholic Education system-wide standardised testing, a number of students have been selected and invited to participate in one or more of these competitions. Students have already received a permission note for these competitions. Parents can also nominate for their child to take part if they wish by collecting a permission note from the school office.

Each competition entry is $9.00 and students must return the money and permission note before March 14 to ensure test booklets can be ordered. This year the due date will be the same for all tests. As test booklets will be ordered after that date, late submissions of permission slips and fees will unfortunately not be accepted.

For those of you who would like to read about ICAS, below is the link:

https://www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/icas/about

For those of you who would like to provide your child with practice of the tests, below is the link:

The test dates for 2018 are as follows:

A Week in the Life of Year 2

In Year 2, the students are focused on being ready to learn and having a positive mindset towards their learning. It helps them to achieve

their best in all learning areas. They are also thinking about at their feelings at the start of each day, and how they can manage this

throughout the day.

Zoe – “I like doing SSP Literacy Groups. We try tricky words.”

Rocco – “In Maths Rotations I learn lots of different things. We do activities on the iPads, play games and work on

numbers.”

Oliver – “In Science, we are learning about the life cycle of a frog. I know that before it becomes a real frog, it is a

froglet with legs.”

Kayla – “I love writing great stories and learning new words.”

Emilia and Lauren – “In Literacy Groups, we have been learning to make text to text

connections with lots of books.” We are also learning to make predictions when we read and

to guess what is going to happen in the book.”

Rosalie and Bethany – “This week, we did Prayer Parade and we told the story of Bayan. We liked reading on

Prayer Parade.”

ST ANTHONY'S PARENT FORUM - CHILDREN AND TECHNOLOGY

TUESDAY 20TH MARCH 8:30AM - 9:30AM Technology provides amazing opportunities for us to learn, document information, share our ideas, as well as connect with each other. For parents, it can be a constant source of concern as we often seem to lose our children to devices, and worry about what children may be accessing and who they may be connecting with. Please come along and share ideas and concerns around your child and how they access entertainment, social connections, learning opportunities and information. Learn from other parents about how they navigate this space with their own children, and find out some of the latest information and research on children and technology.

The forum will be held in the “Chill Out Room” (Double storey block G room number G8) from 8:30am.

SCHOOL FEES

Overdue accounts were emailed yesterday. Prompt payment of all outstanding school fees would be appreciated unless alternative arrangements have been made. Thank you Linda Geran 3820 1204

The Senior Choir and Junior Singers lists are now confirmed for 2018 with a record 118 enthusiastic choir members over the two groups. The rolls are now closed to new students. We have already had some wonderful practices with some beautiful singing from all members. It is going to be a great year!

There are no office bearers – just an enthusiastic group of parents who volunteer their time to support their children’s involvement in choir or band. Please send back the hard copy slip that was sent home with your child by this Friday March 16. Thank you again for all your suppor t.

PARISH NEWS: THANKS FOR BBQ AT BUNNINGS CAPALABA We wish to sincerely thank every par ishioner who contributed in any way to the success of our parish BBQ at Bunnings Capalaba two weeks ago. Despite the all day rain, we attended to innumerable people from morning to dawn. A million thanks to Maryanne and Adrian and other members of the pastoral council who organised this. Also, a lot of parishioners including couples volunteered their time to participate in the activity. Like we mentioned a week before the event, it was a ministry of presence which speaks for itself. It was interesting to see so many people who came over to our store just to identify with us as well as those who did not care who we were, but still came to our store. All the same, we fed everybody without any discrimination.

This is the second time we have been to Bunnings Capalaba for a BBQ which is one of the ideal of our last Parish Planning Day. Both occasions have been very successful and we do not intend to stop. All the same, we will not mind going to any other store or business that allows similar outings for the sake of reaching out to as many people as possible. We are also open to suggestions of any other activity that could effectively connect our parish to our communities. As much as we can, we want to be quite visible as a Church to everyone in our communities.

Finally, although money is not our main target for these activities or any similar one that may come up in the future, we still make a

little money from them. For this last outing, we spent the sum of $1,183.80 and made a profit of $906.10 which we divided equally

between St Vincent de Paul (SVDP) and pastoral formation for some parishioners, especially, the members of our Parish Pastoral

Council. Both SVDP and the Pastoral Council got an equal share of $453.05. In addition to this, we also gave away tones of leftover

food to some people who needed it. Once again, thank you so much for this pastoral activity.

Fridges & Washing Machine Required for St Vincent de Paul: We have noticed that a good number of clients are asking us for fresh vegetables. As we don't have the facilities to keep vegetables fresh, we give clients $10 vouchers to buy fresh vegetables from Woolworths or Coles.

To ensure that the food will stay in good condition we are planning to buy a fridge to store the vegetables. If anybody has a fridge they

are trading in for a new one we would be happy to purchase it. We also have a client who is a single mother in need of a fridge and

washing machine. If you can assist with any of these requests, please contact Amanda at the Parish Office

4J & 4M Class Mass: This Thur sday, 15th March we will be celebrating 9.00 am Class Mass with 4J & 4M. Parents are most

welcome to attend.

Baptism Preparation Session: The next Baptism Preparation evening is being held on Tuesday 20th March at 7.30pm. To book

in please phone the Parish Office on 3820 0100. If you’re interested in becoming a “Baptism Buddy” please contact Margaret at the

Parish Office on 3820 0100.

The Parish Piety Store: Operates before and after both masses at St Anthony’s and St Luke’s. Lovely gifts are available for all

your loved ones. Feel free to browse the beautiful treasures on offer.

God Bless, Fr Emmanuel
