Dialogue Taster ToolkitDeveloped by Sciencewise to:

• Provide experience of public dialogue to people who are new to the area

• Provide training opportunities around facilitation skills.

Simulated dialogues:

• Based on real dialogue material

• Assumes knowledge and skill among organisers

Public Dialogue Exercise• You will work on actual material discussed by

citizens during the RCUK Open Data Dialogue.

• You will have a twenty minute discussion at your table, facilitated by a table host.

• We want to you to discuss how open data should be applied (if at all) in the scenario presented.

Table discussion I Look at the open data principles on your table.

As citizens discuss:

•What matters most to you when it comes to open data?

•Try to identify the three or four most important principles for you as a group

•Is anything missing from the principles?

Table discussion II You will see a hypothetical scenario:

1. If you had been involved in the original research, how would you feel about your data being passed on to Puffalot?

2. Is it important how the data is used?

3. What about timing of release of information?

4. What about the costs involved in opening up the data?

Table discussion III Consider:

• Does the scenario change how you think about open data? If so, how?

• Would you choose different principles after seeing this scenario?

Plenary discussion

• What was the experience of a deliberative small group discussion like for you?

• What did you learn through doing the exercise?

• Can you see situations where you could either use dialogue or the toolkit?
